Dear Class,
Time for your final google quesstion!

1) Discuss what Foucault means by: "Discipline" and "Disciplinary
Society" "Surveillance" and "Spectacle" (hint: you will need to read
more than half the article to understand well!).

2) Find a specific example from your own life of panopticism--what do
you think about this method of discipline in your life?

IMPORTANT: I want YOUR OWN WORDS. Please DO NOT copy definitions from
the internet or dictionary! If you use a quote (passage) from the
article or from anywhere else, please use quotation marks to show that
the words are not yours--and then explain your own point about the
words.

Make me proud! (Though maybe I can only discipline myself to be
proud?!)

Thank you for being interesting prisoners.

First of all, we should know what the meaning of panopticism is. As I
understand from the article by Michel Foucault's, panopticism is such
a theory that enables us to get the control of society that is based
on surveillance. There are always people watching your every move as
we did in the garden of our university. In short we can summarize the
conception of panopticism, observation of someone over other.Foucault
discusses power and discipline and describes the practices of
investigation in his article of panopticism. He explains the effects
of panopticism that gave rise to many social sciences. For example:
let us pay attention to the following extract taken from the article.

"The great investigation that gave rise to the sciences of nature has
become detached from its politico-juridical model; the examination, on
the other hand, is still caught up in disciplinary technology. In the
Middle Ages, the procedure of investigation gradually superseded the
old accusatory justice, by a process initiated from above; the
disciplinary technique, on the other hand, insidiously and as if from
below, has invaded a penal justice that is still, in principle,
inquisitorial"

Here he touches upon the scientific investigations and their roles in
our present and past life. The use of surveillance from the middle
ages to the present has not changed so much. Some tools and applying
of rules might have been changed but their effects are similar.
Panopticism gave rise to scientific inquiry. Even today we observe
surveillance in the street, at the libraries against book theft or
anywhere to save ourselves against any danger. Where ever we go we see
a camera or some types of surveillance security mechanism. Michael
wants to say that. All of them help to conform our present society
into a disciplined society. It psychologically effects people and
makes them to be a little mores careful while doing something. In fact
we people try to act in a good manner as far as possible when feel we
are being watched by someone or something. But I do not believe that
it is true always because in today's society even with the
surveillance, crimes are committed.

In the article, at first it seems to me that he is going to discuss
the prison but after reading some pages, I understand that he begins a
complex explanation of the rise and fall of the prison and along with
he strives to stress the surveillance and its effects in our society
not only in prison. We need surveillance security mechanism and Human
Surveillance because the developing of the world leads new crimes and
dangers. We have reached the stage where we can only talk about what
to do with the prison and how to do without it.

While I was watching TV on Star TV I heard that New York City has
created its own Ring of steel. It cost $90 million but it saved $25
million. Today most of the countries try to locate surveillance
security mechanism everywhere of the city and to provide much
comfort.

Let me give you specific example from my own life of panopticism.
Panopticism and Shame- in our weddings there is usually a vide
cameraman. He takes record from the weeding-when people dance, talk or
having something. I was unaware that the cameraman was recording me.
There was a glass of orange juice in my hand. Then I raised my glass
to drink. I saw that the cameraman has already pointed his camera to
record me. I did not know what to do-to down the jug or to keep on
drinking. I baffled and suddenly the jugs come down from my hand. I
ashamed so much.

At those times when our country was under the power of Russia we so
often come across curfew imposed by Russian soldiers. Only guards,
syndics and Russian soldiers were allowed to be on the streets, or
outside of the homes. No one else was permitted to leave his home. Who
tried to break the curfew he would have been killed by them. That was
ruthless surveillance. In short I would say that, in this article the
author highlights some implications of crime and explains society's
mentality on the law system.

We always believe in power which occurs everywhere. This power
sometimes leads to danger sometimes to good results. From this article
by Foucault I understood that there is two power which is taking place
of the inside of an individual that makes us behave which we should
not, and in addition to this there is second one which is in the
outside of an individual that also has influence on person. These
powers as a result make the existence of "Discipline" and
"Disciplinary
Society". To control ones behavior, teaching your behaviors by means
of self discipline makes human be perfect in society. In other words
as Foucault wants to say; it is the notion which can be seen as the
control of power.
This control is done by the help of Surveillance which can be seen
also as control by legal way or by government. Who is married or
divorced, died, alive and other facts occurring in the life of humans.
Foucault writes about the illness which is spread in town and by the
help of Disciplinary
Society and surveillance this situation is controlled by police or in
other words by government. It is interesting fact that if there was
not this kind of controlling we could see some bad results of this
situation.
In addition to these mentioned above we see Foucault's article about
the cameras that always watches and follows us in our daily life.
Giving prisons in the article Foucault shows it more deeply. The
person sitting alone in cells understands it well. But it can not only
be related to prisoners living in this cell. As well as we also in
normal life feel that someone or some camera is watching us. To this
we can say as an example actors which is also mentioned by Foucault.
We can remember about our childhood when some of us played in school
theatre and our parents tried to say us that during playing do not
watch anyone, you would forget everything in play. And I always closed
my eyes and tried not to see anyone even my parents. Foucault also
mentions this, on the stage the lights on actors makes him be alone on
stage.
May questions can be asked about this notion also this google group
work in our class again can be seen as discipline because the deadline
mentioned by teacher makes students behaviors controlled. As Foucault
says by some people the disciplinary society see it as punishment, and
it is same with us some students this that this google work is
punishment.
I studied in college and every day at 8 o'clock the attendance was
taken in front of the college and we saw it as a punishment and
senseless behavior by administration of school. But now I understand
that this rule done in our school made changes in our lives. Now I
always try to write everything in life and feel everything seriously.
Also in the years of college I experienced panopticism in that I was
feeling that I was watched by our director. If I illegally went out of
school I always felt that he sees me and will punish me. But in
reality he never know it and maybe won't.

In our life there is some interesting situations always happening. But
firstly i want to touch the meaning of panopticism . This is the
control of society . And there is an interesting word which is very
appropriate to the panopticism. This is a discipline .Discipline means
some rule .discipline in our life is very important. We are living in
society and our family is a kind of society .We know that the family
is a little society.IF there is not any discipline in our family or in
our life we can not prove ourselves as a normal person and reach to
the some position and be an important person and we are the future of
our society and our government if we can not discipline ,control our
life we can not control our society. This is the control of power and
the society surveillance controlled by government and there is always
discipline in our life and our government .Everything in our society
is under the control of our government. As the Foucault said if we
take a prisoner his life always is under the control of the police
officers althought he sits alone he is under the control.Always we are
controlling by some powers and some people in our work or in somewhere
else.Everything which happens in our society influences to us.and
against what happens in our life influences to the society. For example
marriage .But we can not controll some aspects of life . One day we
are happy but another day we are unhappy. We are thginking that some
cameras are looking to us and controlling us . I think discipline is
very important to everyone to control his works and also for our
government , to control it and keep in safety and improve .For example
Alixander Makedonski was very wise and disciplined lider and there was
a great and hard discipline in his government and he always controlled
it with rules . but in my life there were some interesting stories
that i was controlled.According to Foucaut ideas i want to say
mine .When i was at scene and sang a song i think for a moment that
audience are controlling me but i closed my eyes and i forgetabout
them and lights helped me in this work.when i was child my parents
always were controlling me i never eat my bread which they put to my
bag and when i came back home my mom was controlling my bag but for
escaping nagging me i put it in the street. And i have to sleep at 8
oclock every night and get up at 7 oclock it was very hard to me
and i was nervous . I have tell them about my lessons and they always
controlling me at school by the helping my sister because she also
studied there.

OLA MY DEAR FRIENDS!
From Foucault's writing I comprehend that sometimes punishment
influence to people's psychology after which human's life was changed
and until their life they always live with that fear not looking that
they was in safe. But, what is discipline? And why we need it?
Discipline sometimes is the rule, law, culture, tradition and
etc. because all these things make people live in a limit. Sometimes
people say that such kinds of laws confine their freedom, but for me
our life would be chaos if we were not having that rules. We have
discipline everywhere even at home e.g. our parents manage us; most
time they told us what to do, what are wrong o right, when we must
sleep and stand, what we must do in the future and etc. and all these
rules help controlling population of the world.
SURVEILLANCE+DISCIPLINE=SAFELY LIFE
If we would not have surveillance we can make a lot of mistakes,
we can be free but that freedom in same time can take our
independence, there for surveillance make us live in discipline, and
that discipline in society make people understand what can make them
rubber, murderer, famous and how they can live their life in secure.
The effect of the Panopticon (it can be punishment, the news that
we watch in TV and etc) always will live in our mind despite of, we
consciously understand that no one is watching us subconsciously we
live with that fear because; "...surveillance is permanent in its
effects, even if it is discontinuous in its action" (p.4) effect of
the event is always with you and not looking that you are alone, no
one is at home you have that fear in your heart, brain.
When I read Foucault's writing I remembered George Orwell's
"1984" where people was controlled with help of telescreen and also
pictures everywhere with note "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU".
Government control population's mind and "If the universe exists only
in the mind, and the Party controls the mind, then the Party controls
the universe", they punished the people who against to the state. That
person was hanging in the street and all other inhabitances of the
country come to see them especially children like this ceremony.
There was a sentence likes" It was almost normal for people over
thirty to be frightened of their own children." Because their children
was very faithful to state and they can betray even their parents if
they try to against to the government. Government said that 2+2=5 and
inhabitances despite of they know the correct answer they try to
forget their own rights because no one want to be hanged. Then, the
members of the Party can read the people's opinion, thought from their
mimics. They live in discipline, under surveillance all the time.
After reading this novel I think that the person who lives in
such society never can forget that trouble and that is the main effect
of the Panopticon that effect of event was stick in our memory just as
louse stick to flesh.
I remember when I was fifteen or sixteen on TV we have a news;
"Maniac abduct pupils, especially girls" event happened in BAKU. After
this event my parents take me to school and when I came back from
school I always tried to went from the street where were more people,
we always tried to went back with our boys because "Having a boy near
give for us secure"
Up to now I always go home from the street where mass people are. A
lot of time passed from that event but effect of Panopticon is with me
still now.
THIS IS OUR LAST DISCUSSION :(
BUT I HOPE THAT WE WILL BE IN CORRESPONDENCE IN THE FUTURE ALSO!
INSHALLAH! GOOD LUCK FOR EVERYONE!

First of all panopticism is that you are surveillanced by someone. You
can not move or do something what you want. It is not good movement
because you feel yourself like you are not in your home. When Michel
Focault created the movement he wanted to show that in the seventeenth
century there is plague that was called leper and that's why all
quartes and departments must be checked. And also in Focault's
Panopticism there are intendants and syndics who carry out their
tasks, must be interested in what habitants complain of, observe
their actions, goes to the street for which they are responsible, must
stop before each house everyday.and also intendants visit the quarter,
inquire syndics. Every room is checked, suspended, from the air;
perfume is poured around the room. He wanted to show that these events
are disciplinary society. But discipline is that your manners taht
your treatments, behaviours, in the society, in your surronder. How
you treat, make communications among people. On the other hand,
panopticon is good manner, on the other hand it gets our freedom. Also
it breaks our mentality/economical ways and also explains our society
mentalities on the law system. You isolate from society, you can not
control yourself how you want to do it. Under the Panopticon you feel
yourself reaaly, not good. Because for example when you understand or
feel that you are really controlled you feel yourself badly. And you
say that what movement is. Panopticism is a term of social control
that was based on the surveillance of someone(authority) to
others(people). His panopticism was branched off J. Bentham's
Panopticon, a building with a tower at the center from which it is
possible to see each cell in which a prisoner is jailed. This movement
is spread like this every body must be in his/her place in what time
was said. Due to this I had never felt like this and I will not say
anything.

Foucault's article on Panopticism though describes the very term by
means of prisons, it actually shows the effect that it possesses on
all and different aspects of our lives. Panopticism took its rise from
the period of plague, the period which forced people to do smth i.e.
to take control of everyone and everything. If at the beginning aim
was to control and prevent the spread of the illness later by
developing, it intervened many aspects of our lives. Panopticism, if
described from the "prison" point of view i.e. architectural point, is
the power of control from the Center where "He is seen, but he does
not see; he is the object of information, never a subject in
communication". Panopticism is the way of controlling by which any
number of people could be under surveillance but at the same time they
are separated as individuals, there is no violence, and there is no
physical torture. According Bentham it is the power that is
everywhere, visible but not verifiable. I think, that is the main
point of effectiveness of panopticism. If we want to achieve creating
disciplinary society first we need to discipline its members, for
discipline anyone we need to control him, for to control we need
surveillance. But it is not that by keeping observing one's behaviors,
actions, in short, life we will be able to discipline that person.
Here the surveillance, observation (panopticism) have nothing to deal
with physical actions, it is case of one's psychology, affecting one's
mind. That is what Foucault tries to explain. Control becomes powerful
when it affects one's psychology, when one starts to control oneself.
When one perceives certain disciplines and follows them automatically
then we can say for the very one disciplined person. Otherwise it
would be torture both for disciplinary and disciplined to be
controlled and would fail somewhere. So in disciplined society people
discipline themselves even when there is no surveillance by others.
People get used to the idea that there is always someone watching them
so they control their behaviors, they (themselves) make themselves act
in a certain way. One should not look at disciplinary principles as
keeping them under supervision because there is nobody standing over
your head and all the time showing the right way to act, that is you
yourself who discipline. That is the way how our lives go. In the
article Foucault goes beyond the prisons and describes the influence
of panopticism on workshops, armies, schools and other fields. As it
is said in article it is impossible to force the convict to good
behavior, the madman to calm, the worker to work, schoolboy to
application, and the patient to the observation of the regulations
without compelling them to discipline. Thus disciplinary society or
discipline is the result of surveillance.
Discipline is everywhere, we live according to them: when we are at
home, when we are out, walk, speak, eat, even our dresses, treatment
of others and so on.
I can give as an example the time when I was in kindergarten. One of
the rules there was all children had to sleep in afternoon, as most of
the children I also hated sleeping, especially because they forced us,
you had no choice but to sleep. So usually when I did not want to
sleep, nut had to be in my bed, I just closed my eyes. And the worst
thing was that I could not open my eyes no could sleep. Because I was
always afraid that teacher is watching me, even if she was out of
room. (I hated kindergarten and cried each day when I was taken
there :)
Panoptic method of discipline, for me, makes person a bit more
stressed and nervous unless one gets used to it. But it is very
effective and different way of discipline since, in any case, result
is disciplined Self.

P.S. Thank you, Ms. Alison, for presenting us new and different way of
working, it was enjoyable.

We see a great connection between the discipline and
panaptocism.Facault talks about two kinds of discipline in this
paragraph:and he shows it through the examples:we all know the the
government's rule about the town, when the plague was spread.Government
ruled a strict disciplined to stop the plague or the dying of
people.Facault firstly stresses the negative side of governmen'r
discipline:He says that,it breaks communacitions,suspending time,but
also he talks its positive sides:it arrest evil,it improve the
exercise of power by making it lighter, more rapid or efficiently.
Facault also says that, discipline increases the skill of each
individual, coordinates these skills,it also increaes fire power.
Facault is extremely right about this.Because if you are disciplined
person, you will improve yourself from each side,or branch or aspect.i
think that, discipline must get used in each person's life.If an
individual is more disciplined,he knows rules, respect to others and
othe positive things.First of all,to be good disciplined means to know
yourself very well:your desires,your wishes,your character etc..
For Facault the disciplines function increaingly as technigues for
making useful individuals. It is another good idea of Facult.Facault
consider discipline as a machine,or a system, and this machine makes
very useful individual for society,for nations,for future.for ex:When
i was studying in the secondary school,it was not a problem to enter
the class after the teacher, the teacher was not scolding you,or force
you away from the class, and it was get used on me to enter the class
after the teacher.most teachers were like that.I supposed that you can
do it in everywhere. But when i began university,i saw that it is not a
secondary school, and the rules are more difficult or disciplined.I had
trouble to change my habit, but at the end i succedded.
Facault consider religious groups and charity organizations the best
way to discipline populations.
The discipline is a type of power,a modality for its exercise;it is
phyisics or anatomy of power.
Facault insistes that,if an individual is disciplined, first a pure
community, second disciplined society. And he proves his thoughts with
the examples about the plague and the prisoners.
Facault's second example we see how the survelliance work?Asthe
prisoners are watched from a tower in their cells. And always they pay
attention to their actions,behaviors...And it gets used on them, after
they are released they thing that somebody is watching them, and again
they pay attention to themselves. They do this process for a long time,
may till the end of their life may be not.
For ex;if you read the work 1984 by George Orwell you will encounter
the same thing. The government put telescreens to each house, and
telescreens record what you do,all your actions, behaviors.Government's
aim is,if anyone is against the government and to define him or her.

Ican give many examples from my own life:for ex:When i was in the
first course of university i was staying in the dormitary in
Sumgayit. And every night at eleven o'clock the personal of dormitory
switch off the light, and you must sleep.First i didn't like it but
when i left there i realized that it was good, and i missed for it.Why
it is good?because when you sleep early at night you get up early in
the morning, and you are more healthy and powerful.
Another example i can give from my family life. When i was prerpaaring
for the university exams,my family forbid me to watch tv,and of course
i did not like it,but at the end i could win university like
Qafqaz, and i am very happy that i listened to my parents and did not
watch tv,but now i watch.

Hi. Firstly I want to say that this text took me a lot of time to
read. Finally, I searched the internet; author`s life and creativity
and Jeremy Bentham's Panopticon to catch the point. I found out that
Foucault`s own life was not so moral as he wanted to give us the
example of disciplinary society. He was a gay and died from AIDS in
1984. And we know how the contagion of AIDS happens, so it can tell us
more about his life. And I was surprised when I read his work about
moral and disciplinary society.
Anyway, I want to speak about discipline and Panopticism. Author shows
us to ways of disciplinary society which one of these is the
''discipline-blockade, the enclosed institution, established on the
edges of society, turned inwards towards negative functions: arresting
evil, breaking communications, suspending time...'' prisons that was
built on islands or on desert or somewhere else very distant places
from society, hospitals for infectious diseases, for psychologically
problematic people and also some famous countryside educational
buildings that are far away from big cities serve the interests of
this discipline. Maybe the power want to protect their society from
dangerous, mad and sick, contagious people and consider this way the
best one for solution to main problems which can be seen threatening
for that power. These institutions have very strict disciplinary
rules and many inspectors to watch out inmates or schoolboys and
patients. Prisons always are dark and damp and a single glimpse of
outward appearance creates unpleasant feeling on peoples.
And second, ''discipline-mechanism: a functional mechanism that must
improve the exercise of power by making it lighter, more rapid, more
effective, a design of subtle coercion for a society to come...'' means
a mechanism that more practical and useful both for power and society.
It would be new designed institutions with more lightened buildings
and less visible inspections; such institutions that make people obey
disciplinary rules by its special design which create the idea that
they are being watched out by someone, as a result workers work
properly, students study without any copy at exams, infectious
patients don't contact with others with a fear that they are
exercised. This discipline mechanism was named as Panopticism by
Foucault and for him discipline projects developed into today`s
Panoptican discipline through the time of historical transformation.
And this formation of discipline projects 'throughout the whole social
body' has become bases of disciplinary society. Surveillance is a way
of observing and exercising of body and to perform these operation
easily we need special building. The panopticon building is the best
one for surveillance in the plague that Foucault begins with his
article. Plague surveillance were needed to protect society: the
panopticon allows power to operate society proficiently. 'We are
neither in the amphitheatre, nor on the stage, but in the panoptic
machine, invested by its effects of power2 which we bring to ourselves
since we are part of its mechanism.' Author wants to say that our life
is not a spectacle that is playing on the stages. We are not playing
for others to make them enjoy and find vigour in our life. This
examination spreads throughout society. Schools, factories, hospitals
and prisons resemble each other, not just because they look similar,
but because they examine pupils, workers, patients and prisoners,
classify them as individuals and try to make them obey to the norm. It
is a functional, enduring structure. The Panoptican is useful for
power to control such methods of coercion and operate them throughout
society. The fact that the modern citizen spends much of his life in
at least some of these institutions reveals how far society has
changed. The development of a disciplinary society involves socio-
economic factors, particularly population increase and economic
development.
'Power should be visible and unverifiable. Visible: the inmate will
constantly have before his eyes the tall outline of the central tower
from which he is spied upon. Unverifiable: the inmate must never know
whether he is being looked at at any one moment; but he must be sure
that he may always be so.' Idea of Panopticism was found more before
the time of new technologies; cameras and computers, it was found
probably at the time of revolution in France. And the given building
of panoptic structure was planned for that times, but now our daily
life is Panopticism, for new technologies help to control our life in
every step. Every building has cameras in it, even spaceships have
more place in our life. These apparatus are helpful for defining your
residence. Mobile phones and also home telephones are used for
listening private talk and also for defining residence of subscribers.
In my own life there was a condition that I had would like to had a
panoptican system, but unfortunately I had to share my room with other
infectious patients when I was in a hospital. I demand this condition,
but I was said that if you can pay for this room about $100 you can
stay here alone. As a result I shared my room with four female patient
together. Only later I was told that all of them had get infectious
virus, but not me. I had not had that virus and my participation there
together with them was very dangerous. Later one of them died. So I
think sometimes Panopticism might be usefull.
And we have many cameras in our Univercity, as you know, so we are
very careful when we notice them. We train ourselves, our soul and
bodies not to be seen or known unpleasant ones others and for Allah.
I can speak a lot about the discipline and panopticism, but I think
it`s enough for now. In fact I want to speak about the most superior
discipline that is the Islamic discipline which was the first in a
world history for its perfection. As you see Foucault consider that
disciplinary society began from seventeenth century, but Islam brought
discipline in our lives in seventh century, ten centuries before the
Europe and Enlightenment in Europe. This discipline has been following
from faith, clean conscience, obedience to Allah unquestioningly, and
love to prophet Muhammed (Allah bless him). This discipline begins
from the human rights, and even Allah doesn`t forgive the person who
trampled on smb`s rights and hasn`t been yet pardoned. And each Muslim
knows that Omnipresent and Omniscient powered Almighty Allah observing
us every moment and Allah knows even what we hide in our hearts, so
faithful men don`t try to be disobedient, if they try they know what
would be as a punishment, both in todays` life and hereafter.
Unfortunately, some extremists created a bad image of Islam, but one
day the Great day will come, and all suspicions will be destroyed. Who
believes in only Allah (but not to other gods as father and son) and
the last prophet Muhammed will be rewarded, but who doesn`t believe to
Only Allah and His LAST PRORHET MUHAMMED will be condemned.

Discipline is a series of techniques by which the body's operations
can be controlled. Discipline worked by coercing and arranging the
individual's movements and his experience of space and time. This is
achieved by devices such as timetables and military drills, and the
process of exercise. Through discipline, individuals are created out
of a mass.
According to me,disciplinary society is that,if someone can control
him/herself it means that he/she can control themselves in the
society.if we eamine disciplinary society it is consists of
disciplinary persons,so everybody is a part of this society.

As I can understand from Foucalt's writing; punishment has got an
important role on human and his psychology that people learn how to
break themselves when they image punishment.

Discipline is also play a significant role that it comes across as a
rule. Owing to discipline, overflowing in society is remove. Even if
discipline is sometimes admitted to limit freedom of people by
society, it is much more better than living in chaos.

The base of the Army is discipline. Yes, maybe the example of an Army
is more cruel than living it in society but army without discipline
cannot be thought.

If a person would not have surveillanced, human make so many
mistakes that he thinks these kind of behaviours are right untill
somebody protest him.

But human could not think that uncontrolled freedom is not freedom.
When people start to live uncontrolled freedom, it ends with
unhappiness, unesiness and crime.
Morever we cannot talk about safety of society.

Before we talk about panopticism, we should know the meaning of it.
Panopticism; a prison so contructed that the inspector can see each of
the prisoners at all times, without being seen.

After reading the article of Foucault and when I combine
informations, I deduce that panopticism is a theory base on
surveillance in order to control society.

When I was 4 years old in my grandmother's house I chased gooses in
yard. During the chase one of the goose was flee between the walls in
chasm. At that time my sister in law saw me.
When I come home she asked where is it? I said "I do not know, maybe it
wanders" Then she said " do not tell me lie anymore, I was see
everything". At that time I hate her and also that goose.

Good evening my dear friends and my lovely teacher. I am very
sorrowful, because of our last writings. But everyone would be
agreeing with me that to work with you was very pleasure to us.
Discipline and Discipline Society. These words are very possible part
in everyone's life. For everyone it is clear that humans are not
created independently. We- human beings created by God. So since our
birth our life is controlled. As a matter of fact, since our birth our
life is completely depend on the Discipline system. In my opinion
humans firstly must be entirely in the right way in front of the God.
Because although we in the bus, wedding, party, alone in the home and
ext. everywhere that our breath has we must not forget that in the sky
our God look us and does not matter if you alone you never feel
yourself free, you never wear, do some actions quite freely. Foucault
writes that; a real subjection is born mechanically from a fictitious
relation. He wants to say that most time no one looks you, but you
think that you are being watched. So my saying is that, first of all
humans must be do our God's putting rule (in scientific language named
Discipline), then fulfill our government's, head of the country's
order. This system peculiarity is to control whole people life, power
and it is done by help of the Surveillance in which we see how the
police, government, the head of the country control our life. In some
aspect it is good for humans, but from another point it is not. Why?
Because sometimes humans boring from that system, society. They don't
want that their life is controlled by their family, society and ext.
For e.g. In "Jane Eyre" the little, orphan girl for her aunt's not
being of useful Discipline System for her is always rejected by Jane.
She was against not only her aunt's control, but also for society's
favour. She wants to live freely. But wishing of to be free I can not
be say that she desired free life. The life injustice forced her wish
so. In such a way, some people ignored to be controlled, to be under
the discipline. But to live under the Surveillance for me must be
useful. Because all our life is depend on. For e.g. all television
programs, all art (theatre, cinema, movies, music, painting,) are
depend on Discipline Society an by help of the Surveillance the people
who works in that places that I enumerate on the head do their works
perfectly. "Discipline increases the skill of each individual,
coordinates these skills, accelerated movements, increase fire power,
broadens the fronts of attack without reducing their vigour, increase
the capacity for resistance. The discipline functions increasingly as
techniques for making useful individuals. So my writing, my opinion it
can be say is near to Foucault's those sentences.
Panopticism is the somesing that we can control our life. So the
second name of discipline. There are some events in our life that the
effect of panopticism is never cleaned from our mind.
I remembered when I was in fourth or fifth class one group band of
robbers were followed me. That time I came from school. I felt that I
was being shadowed, but I couldn't see anyone behind me. I thought
that it seems to me. But it was vice-verse. I am very afraid of that
people, and to reach the home I must to go. I did not know what to do.
Suddenly I saw that I put myself in one unknowing yard, and knocked
the door as if it is my home. I explained everything to those women,
in which I knocked. Then that women husband to see me to our door. Now
I am in 23 and I remembered it as it happened yesterday and I know
that I will never forget this events. So some bad events-that is
effects of panopticism stay humans brain forever, because it is the
way of life.
Teacher good luck for you, for me and for my each friend for their new
life after university. My friends I wish I will hear a piece of your
news and teacher I believe we will me again. Thank you for you new
Discipline system that collect and made us clever.

good night everybody.it is so bad to finish our 4 yeared student life
in a such easy way.
i had an idea about panopticism which now i see the same with Ayka's
idea.i mean, whatever we do,wherever we go we should now that our life
is in GOD's hand,i.e, we are first of all under HIS surveillance and
under HIS discipline.so we must do everything according HIS rule and
not to hurt anybody either morally or physically.we just have no
rights.but Foucault speaks in his "panopticism" about people's
survelliance and their discipline methods, which could be changed for
everyone's ideal life.and i think that it's also necessary to be in a
discipline beside God's one, according different societies.it could be
institutions, offices, different factories, etc.it helps us how to
behave in different places.
my dears, good bye till the last exams.my dear teacher i must say that
you are one of the best teachers of the world, for me.

Hi dear teacher and friends!!!!
For Foucault Disciplining is the kind of project which was founded
during seventeenth century, when some infectious illnesses spread
around the towns. For his mediation the plague and the measures
against it gave rise to disciplinary methods. All the Panopticon
architecture and measurements were aimed to minimize people's contact
and prevent the illness from spoiling the population. Seemingly since
then Politicians and religious leaders began to use disciplinary
methods for different purposes. I think discipline is the
indispensable method for organizing the mass population. Plague was
the threatening illness that could have infected the population and
panopticism and disciplining were the methods that worked on.
Therefore government or religious priests whoever governs the mass
population and wants to have a control of people have put this method
into practice.
Disciplining is the first step for getting started to control people.
Even today governments can not come against to it. To have a
disciplined society is to have a flexible population, that can have
different shapes if wanted. As Foucault states "one of the rules of
panoptic discipline is to make people to like it". So discipline is
not sealed as the evident of oppression, so even today it is in use
even in democratic countries. Besides it has a psychological impact on
people, that even in its absence people feel its pressure on
themselves.
We can not reject discipline as harming people, because it has both
advantages and disadvantages. I don't agree with Foucault's resembling
the schools, hospitals, military etc. to prisons. The discipline rules
of these institutions serve different purposes. We must not forget
that members of schools and hospitals etc. are not criminals. If
within the boundaries, in a good terms people would never get suffered
from the disciplinary environment. Instead we can not imagine
military, schools, or hospitals without discipline.

But in different case- Today every organizations and institutions aim
to achieve a good disciplined business. Because they know it well that
in a disciplined business they will get more profit. Discipline is a
good case but when it is not exceeded. Today there are some companies
that they have over disciplined regimes. Over discipline leads to the
abolishment of human rights and. In order to have their works go
companies use strict disciplining regimes and force people to work
hard even don't care the health of workers. Once on a television I
have heard one Turkish man's story, he is telling "When I worked in
Germany in one of the factory, I had an accident and was strictly
injured in the head. But the chief not even called the help even
didn't let me to leave the work, as it was the working time" So for
the strict discipline of work, the injured man had to wait till the
work time ends otherwise he will be left without any job. Such cases
frequently happen even in our country. May be, now I evaded from the
main topic, but I think that under the name of discipline, many chiefs
or leaders in the world misuse the labors of people. To be preside,
with this way they get cheap workers and so have more benefit.
So we came to learn the history of discipline and its origins being
the plague.
So came the end of our Google writing. I want to say that it was
really interesting to share all of our ideas here together. Never
before we had such a chance, Google work was a new method for us, we
learned many things here and surely everybody had some enjoy. Thank
you teacher for your patience for our strange writings (sometimes
ridicule, sometimes silly).

GOOD BYE!

hi everybody
In every part of life, we feel the effect of surveillance. In my
opinion surveillance is the inevitable rule of living in a
society.Here panopticism is seen.What is panopticism?Panopticism, as I
understood from the text, is the theory that bases on surveillance on
people by others and this surveillance has the reason of getting
control of society. As I understood the surveillance that comes from
inside of the person is named as "discipline" and the surveillance
that is made by other people or other powers in the society causes
"disciplinary society".From another aspect we can say that the
instictive surveillance results with "disciplinary society.Because we
all know that if all families cleans in front of their home, the city
will be very good. So in this aspect surveillance makes the society
"disciplinary society".
There are always people or powers that controls us. We feel the
effect of surveillance everywhere.I can give examples from my own
life. When I was a child I had learned about the secret information
organization of my country MIT as CIA in USA and MOSSAD in Israel.I
had heard that they are everywhere and they know everything.I thought
that they always watch us.They know whatever we do and they will
punish us if we have a bad movement. In the period from learning this
to learning the real meaning of that organization I was afraid of
doing something outside.I was just 6-7 years old and I had too many
utopias about this. One day I fought with my friend and I hurt his
head. Then I ran to my house and I cried "They will punish me,they will
took me into jail."And that day when I was running to my home I was
looking for everywhere with scare. My eyes were looking for a secret
agent who would watch me.And I can say that those days I felt the
surveillance and I felt myself that as if I was controlled by other
people and I must live whatever they want. I felt the effect of
panopticism in this period. And I didn't like this situation because
being watched by other people or feeling yourself to be watched is the
worst thing because it restricts everything in the person's life.
But in other words surveillance is essential in my opinion.Because
democracy and human rights mustn't be seen as the limitless freedom of
people. They are the freedom which doesn't effect other people's
freedom or which doesn't disturb other people in society. If there is
not "surveillance" and if everybody behave whatever they want then
living together will beimpossible.
From another aspect the society always keeps surveillance with the
effect of culture. A citizen of a culture can't be able to do whatever
he/ she wants. There are always the nations', the society's
restriction. Eyes are always on you when you wanna do something. This
efects the lifestyle of people. Maybe my behaviours are not suitable
to the culture of Singapore for an example. The best example for me is
Azerbaijan. I can't do too many things that I did before in Turkey.
Because here has a different culture and not the culture will fall
into step with me, I must fall into step with the culture of
Azerbaijan. Here I feel the efect of surveillance too much, more than
I felt in my own country and I change my behaviours according to this
surveillance.Because of this reason the subject surveillance is a very
good subject for me.

Panopticism is a theory of social control that is based on
surveillance also indicating that there are always people watching
your every move.Panopticism tend to observe us.There are many bad
side side of panopticism which doesn't support our rights of freedom.
Panopticism innt allow us to feel ourselves freedomly. And FAUCAULT
tries to show us "what is Panopticism "what is bad and good side of
it".
What means FAUCAULT means by saying "Discipline" "Disciplinary
society".Discipline is that we don't do what we want .Disciplanary
society is that is based on society.Without discipline in our society
and in our life we can see many bad things.
I think Panopticism has bad and good side.I can say example:my parents
allow my brother to come to this time at 9 o"clock .If he doesn't come
he would be scolded. But he think it is not right. But I think it is
good because he know that his parents follow him .Thats why he also
follow his action.

Hi :-)

Lets the firstly make clear meaning of the word discipline. Sometimes
"discipline" uses as the meaning of punish and crime. But Discipline
did not give as the same meaning with punish and crime. And we can say
that discipline is opposed with punish. For my mind equivalent of the
discipline conception is to conform to the rules. But the crime is
lack of discipline for ex. Behave against the rules. And you punished
when you did something opposed the rules.
My own opinion and opinion after reading this article I think that
discipline is important in society. Again I will repeat that
discipline is means to conform of the rule. If there is not discipline
in society life will be very difficult. In society we include schools,
hospitals, government etc. It's normal that when we feel surveillance
we feel our self discomfort. We try to control ours behave. Sometimes
surveillance is important for discipline. From my own experience I
can only say that when I feel surveillance over me I began excitement,
I try to control myself. I see true in Jeremy Bentham's explanation
surveillance or we can say control over ones he says that "if the
inmates are convicts, there is no danger of a plot, an attempt at
collective escape, the planning of new crimes for the future, bad
reciprocal influences; if they are patients, there is no danger of
contagion; if they are madmen there is no risk of their committing
violence upon one another; if they are schoolchildren, there is no
copying, no noise, no chatter, no waste of time; if they are workers,
there are no disorders, no theft, no coalitions, none of those
distractions that slow down the rate of work, make it less perfect or
cause accidents."

hi to everyone

DISCIPLINE is the important action in our life i think so. Because if
there is Discipline there is always pesponsibility. Also discipline
has its rules and control ways. For a minute lets think that everyone
acts as he wants. As their intention. At that time the society will
confuse. But discipline makes it clear makes it on its way. Everyone
stars to behaviour due to only on a one rule. From my own life I can
say that when I do not do things as planed everything becomes mix. Also
in a discipline has the feeling of fair. And all knows that " Fair "
always makes a man to bahaviour on a way.

DISCIPLINARY SOCIETY is also an inseperable part of a society. I
think discipline forms A DISCIPLINATY SOCIETY.All citisens know that
we have such kind of disciplines adn starts to act due to those rules.
Without it no lidershisp can control ihis country and society in it.
We can see it from religious point also. The god gives us different
disciplinary rules. And shows that without it avery county can spoil
in every time We can see it in history where happened VOLCANE - VEZUVI
IN ROME.(POMPEY).
Such kind of trouble we can see also in Lut profet`s time. There was
not any discipline and the god send trouble that tribe.

SURVEILLANCE also another undivided part of the society. Because at
that time a man can not behaviour as he wants. Ex. a child does
different things as she wants. And the mother says that I will tell
you to yuor father. If the mother says to her father a child always
know that i CAN PUNISH at any time. And starts behav'our as her
mothers knowledge.
At university at shools also fot it teachers puts an absent mark to
students. If a student is over an absent mark university tries to make
it clear. Tries to surveillance over that student.

SPECTACLE i think is the end of these steps . Spectacle is somehow is
morror. Shows everything as itself. If there is not good discipline we
will see negative points. But if we see positive features is the
success of that society

Hi class.
Discipline;in my oppinion this is just another name to which given
name by creators by powerfull people this is another name of
controlling people their activities and their lives also. There is
number of reason because of which discipline are created but I want
say just one it is just attutude toward people live.People couldnt
live freely because of that forming habitual and sociological bonds by
which people are ruled by someone on the top who has links to all
people in his country and we knew that we are governed or ruled by
someone because of we fear that we couldnot exist without the
society and in the other hand leader or the man in the top aware
about this fear he knew that we (all people)must be ruled if we are
not governed by someone else we couldnt exist. But there is also
rebellions against this kind of oppression and oppressors but I think
they are very little if they couldnt change anything.
In our copies we has also another point as the differences between
discipline and leper.and I agree with the author which emphasized
one of this as clean society.I could say another point in which the
world of power distinguishes people into two parts. It is like in wild
nature that stronger eat weaker.there could be words about usefulness
the discipline or something other which helps us to gain or achieve
something but they also cant avoid the fact that in this position they
forms us or all people just as robots which have only habits and the
program by which they start and continiue their lives we couldnt rid
of this program if we want because we have bonds because we are
thepart of society because of that if we rebel against it we are in
danger lost everything as well our lives.I am aware that it seems
fantastic or like fiction but it is fact that we all have curtain in
our eyes we couldnt see the reality in which the world rules by strong
number of leaders and one human life is nothing for them in the way of
creating disciplined society (only the society which they want no t
we) in this way they could sacrifice not just one.this is priece for
our disciplined comfortable boring ruled or governed life.
I agree with the usefull position of the discipline rules and
goverement they say that they couldnt achieve nothing without that i
agree with it but I cant agree with the side that we are ruled by
certain indiviuals(it is not our state or goverement)the goverment
just symbol which is unite parts under one name.
Discipline could have good sides but in my oppinion it is just THE
POWER CONTROL PEOPLES.

Hi everybody.
Faucault means by means of surveillence the system of
registration,being permanant strictly watched.He tells about a
plauged town which is kept under Surveillence. Each inhabitant is
locked at home, no one is allowed to go out. Each of them is provided
with ration of food, provision. Nobody sees each other. It is like a
quarantine regime and every situation, incidents are observed, events
recorded. Each individual is closely examined.
If someone is under surveillance h\she is under strict control in
which you will be fixed in a certain place like ploughed town, all
your slightest movements observed, you will be closely examined.
Foucault explains the discipline as obedience of people and
under most absolute authority. It is a kind of power takes all
techniques, technology, people and everything under its control.
Without discipline the life will be in chaos. As Foucault says it
has both negative and positive sides. At first talking about its
positive sides the discipline diminishes dangers among population,
avoid chaos, disorders, It establishes peace and sound. But on the
other hand it makes you think you are always under control, you are
always being watched in any matter. Foucault supports his opinion by
showing that in the town which ploughed appeared people and town were
saved by the help of strong surveillance and discipline..
Every society needs discipline but not in a violent form.It should not
be used to threaten people, to turn them into docile creatures, to
lock their doors and barrack their ways.
Discipline reinforce the development of economy, production, it makes
the education strong, raise the level of public morality if it is used
normally. Discipline regulates the rules of life, the rules of
society. it facilitates progress. If there is discipline in the
university, there is no idleness of students, no copying. No
chattering. If there is a discipline in the factory, there is high
rate of work. If there is a discipline in the government system. There
is no bribery, no corruption, and no disorders .Because in that keys
everybody feels the sense of being watched, being in the center of
observation .here they are the object of information. In short
discipline should be balanced.
Disciplinary society arises from well disciplined people. It is
happened by means of religious groups and charity organizations. They
play an enormous role of disciplining the society. They visit to the
most known places regularly and try to enlighten them. They call
people to behave in terms of religious rules, to be aware of GOD'S
existence and to be assured of being watched by HIS Almighty. They
should judge themselves everyday and makes them to do well, be kind to
everyone.
Government also plays the role in that case by using police force.
They organize a strong power over population to control them. They
concern with every detail and have mobile attentions on everywhere.
In short discipline functions as the role of auxiliary of justice
and essential for everything in balanced.
From my own experience when I was studied at the secondary school
we sometimes run away from lessons illegally as a group. But only I
was afraid that if I run our school director would know that and
he would call me in front of everybody and scold me .I was so
afraid of it. But it never happened...Also I had a teacher, if
somebody was late just for even 3 minutes he would not allowed to
enter the classroom. In that time it came to me very
senseless, like we are humans, we can be late, etc but now I
understand it was supposed to be like that. It made students be
responsible for their lessons and times.

Hi everyone!

Faucault begins to explain discipline by giving examples of
panopticism. He first explains us what panopticism is.The cases of
plague, prison etc.make us understand it.F.points out that, in order
to struggle with plague the project aimed to confront it with
discipline which demanded surveillance and spectacle.Panopticism maked
it sure that every one's behavior is watched and people thought that
they were always being watched.F.further shows that the discipline in
panopticism gave way to "disciplinary society" where most state
institutions used the diciplinary control like in the project of
panopticism. For ex: the panopticim was applied to prisons, schools,
hospitals and etc.
Faucault makes us realize that discipline is used as a tool to
control masses. With the emergence of panopticism a new way of control
began. The difference from the historical one was that, peaple were not
controlled with harsh forces , they were made believe that everything
was for their welfare.Their way of thinking was changed by making it
stable. They were made to think according to the wishes of those who
controlled them.We see it in the article that, when prisoners were out
of the tower they still taught that they were being watched.
F. doesnot tell us that discipline is bad and evil thing.I think,
he wants to show how it is manipulated. In my opinion people should be
made to control their own behaviors. If there wasn't any discipline
think of there existing states, armies etc.Everyone would do what she
or he wanted in coax. From here we may think of freedom. If people would
be given a complete freedom, we can think of the state of the
world. Its true that there are still crimes, sins in disciplined
societies, but to certain extent.
In modern world discipline is greatly manipulated in
technology. For ins ,in America there is a newly created system which
records people's talks on cell phones. It's very high achievement of
tech.Technology began to present itself in every aspect of our life.It
can know where we are every time, what we do, what we eat etc.I won't
wonder if it becomes able to read our thoughts too.Though we can
justify all of these achievements( for ins secret cameras help to
prevent theft) , they make us irritated in most ways.I'd would be very
happy if tech found way to make achievements without making people
irritated. The gratest ACHIEVEMENT would be this.

Hi to everebody

Be everywhere but not in prison

(Ali
Bereket)

He is the Jeremy Bentham and his panopticism that much more concern
with prison. But Micheal Faucoult uses term not only to prison but also
hospitals,schools,workshops,factories etc.With using Bentham's
panopticism Faucoult gives his ideas on what is
discipline ,disciplinery society, surveillance and spectacle.

To Faucoult discipline is positive in order to bring immoral to
moral, insanity to sanity, unnormal to normal. If it is so then
Faucoult is correct in his views.Because of discipline we behave
ourselves good because we are afraid of being subjected to any kind of
punishment.I want to give an example of Faucoult's own life that he
was homosexualist. Later on he regretted of being homosexualist and
killls himself (if I am not mistaken) . Perhaps at that time he had
not any discipline upon himself .If Faucoult would read christianity
(perhaps he read) or obey its rules, he may have a discipline upon
himself . Not only Islam but also Chtistianity forbids homosexualism.

Societies are different because of their discipline. George
Orwell's 1984 is of a totalitarian kind.It may be called bad
society. But if I am not mistaken what Faucoult means by this is that
governments must do for the goodness of society.F.e if police convicts
someone of being guilty of crime and try to arrest him is not that
police are against humans,he just avoids convict to do crimes later
on.

Surveillance is just the same. F.e employers, police, docters,
jailors do not want people to do wrongs. Beacause of this they use
technology. They do not use it everywhere unlike George Orwell's
1984.They just use it in hospitals ,prisons, etc in order to put
individuals under control. The prisoner may run, that is why they put
him under control.

For the final I want to say panopticism is everywhere that
follows us though we sometimes sure that it does not.

For me I can say that in my thesis I try avoid plagiarism, because I
know that after finishing it my supervisor will control it.So I do not
plagiarise and I think that it is for my benefit.

hellooo....
i think In order to have more organized life we need to be more
disciplined and be more careful. I believe that first taken records of
towns is written during the times of plague. During these times the
government was trying to find out the ways to fight with plague. So
they started to take notes of the citizens of the town they wrote down
the name age and sex of the citizens of the town and one official used
to go around the town and check them. They had two copy of these
written document one with the government and one on the hand of
official. He used to take notes of all the new and difference on those
documents. By this was the government was more organized they star to
know how many citizens they have and their specialties by this way. I
believe first organized societies were settled down by this was but I
think discipline is important in the society ant individually at the
same time. Individual discipline brings us to more disciplined society
because disciplined people they know their responsibilities.
Discipline is a power. Invisible power. People feel the affects of it
but can not point to it. It is believed that more powerful discipline
is the discipline that comes from individual's inner self without any
pressure. So the researchers tired to find the ways to make ppl feel
that power of discipline and they found the panopticism. In this
method they had one tower in the centre of the tower there was one
room and around others room having two windows one looking to centre
room another to outside and they put some criminals in side those
rooms criminals did not saw each other because they were in different
rooms and at the same time they didn't see the panopticon in the
centre. It is obvious that not all the time panopticon was there and
watching the criminals but it made them to think that he might be
watching. By this way they tried to teach the criminals the feeling of
surveillance and after they get used to this feelings they start to
behave in the way that they are suppose to behave. It is the same
thing in real life. We try to behave in the way that society accepts
from us no matter what because we have the feeling of surveillance as
well. It is obvious that nobody is watching as all the time but it is
the feeling that comes from inside of humans beings even you know that
nobody is watching you but you still do act as if somebody is watching
and I believe it is a feeling that GOD has put in the human beings
because no matter what happens and even though no body is watching we
know that HE is watching all the time. hope pur exams will be easy :P

Spectacle of power was used in ancient time, whereas present society
is under the surveillance. In order to sustain the power, people are
induced that they must always be aware of all steps because of the
permanent observation. It is the panoptical mechanism that helps the
power to discipline society in such way--it can always see its subjects
who can't see it. This mechanism, though, is not continuous, it keeps
on peoples' mind that they are always watched or listened to. It is
exactly different from what is applied in prisons. Though we are
enclosed like prisoners, we don't live in hidden, dark place like
them. Its goals are to increase the level of economy, moral, health,
education, production, reinforcing all social forces.
This discipline mechanism, unlike discipline-blockade, "increases the
possible utility of individuals." So this disciplinary society--
altered, trained or corrected--is open to do good things, try to make
contribution to useful fields in their lives. This technique is for
the benefits of individuals--to improve their skills, way of thinking,
working, experience; to preserve balance of power and economy, peace
and comfort among people that must also be chosen and arranged for
their diversities. It is absurd, for example, to attain lazy person to
high position, or to dismiss one--who knows his job--in order to put
your, say, close friend--who is less experienced--in that job, etc.
There are many specific examples in our life in terms of this method
of discipline. However, I believe that man must discipline himself
first to keep his virtue and pride according to the orders of the
Creator, whose sayings are unchanged and preserve it till doomsday.
This panopticism must always be in minds and hearts of all Muslims
that they are, in every second, under the observation of God. Action
is OK, it is visible. However, intention can't be caught up by human-
made mechanism, but of God. Even if you fail sometimes to put your
good intention into the action due to different reasons, you are
rewarded by Him. Anyway, this method of discipline is really good for
us particularly in the era of technology, by which people are ready to
destroy the world to some extent, and end their own lives.

As I understood from the passage, Foucault compares the implementation
in prison with its effects and the surveillance of people in society
by means of panoptic mechanism. The prisons are surrounded, hidden
without light, however it can be applied to society by the virtue of
this mechanism, in order to maintain the power. In that case,
spectacle is replaced by surveillance that is "permanent in its
effects, even if it is discontinuous in its action."
The Panopticon is a well-made imaginary machine in distinguishing
patients, school-children, workers, etc. In effectual and economical
way this mechanism arranges the power by applying discipline that
"increases the skill of each individual, coordinates these skills,
accelerates movements, creates a private link between individuals."
When that functional mechanism is applied to disciplinary society, it
gradually shows its benefits in terms of morality, economy, juridical,
etc.
Unlike prisoners, we are free to do many things in our free world,
albeit in limited way. However, it stimulates the development of
civilizations of surveillance orderly. You have right, for instance,
to drive a car, but as a driver you should obey some rules in your
way, thinking that you are under the observation of police and could
be caught up in case you break the driving rules. This surveillance
disciplines the drivers in a panoptical way.
As for me, I just want to give one example during my wedding day. My
father as usual warned me not to smile or laugh in my wedding party,
reasoning that as if it is unpleasant behavior for bride. He
disciplined me at that time, even promised me to reward me if I obey
his order. In that party, my father hadn't enough time to observe me
whether I smile or not. But whole the time I tried to discipline
myself not to do this, fearing that he could catch a glance of me in
any time. The video cassette proved that I hadn't done any wrong thing
in my party.
See YOU!!!

Hi everybody!
This subject is also" interesting "as usual:D

First of all I want to write the meaning of panopticism.what is the
panopticism? As I understand , panopticism is such a theory that
control the society.and what is the controlling?where we can see this
panopticisim. Example in institutions, prisons, schools, and
hospitals etc. and all of this places are the parts of society. I
mean that if these places are under the control there would be no
crimes,no tyranny. Everything would be under the rules, controls.haw
can we set up this Discipline?easy way is to use camera in this
places.it helps our societies work easy. Because of people feel some
discipline. Without discipline we sometimes we can not control us.
This discipline is not only about in the school.university,work.
Every family have to create discipline at home,to make people feel
them under the control. Lets give example about our uni. We have a
lot of cameras in there. Witht this camera securities can see what is
happening in the uni. They can easily follow events.it is good.but in
the other side sometimes it makes us to fell under the box. I mean if
we know that there is someone is following us ,we became to feel us
discomfort, yiou feel yourself in the box.
We see panopticism everyday nearly every pleace. But it's not only way
of panopticism; people do it in a different way. Panopticism-sometimes
makes people to afraid to do some things,to do some steps. Because a
fear of panopticism settled in their conscious; they thought that they
are always under observation.in way way iti is good but the other way
it is against human rights.example if you want to be dofferetn amoung
the people.you willl have some limits ,because of you have t pay
attenition to the others opinions.i don't like this subject, that's why
I cant inspired by panopticism (Michel Foucault's,)

Panoticism is simply a metaphor for how society s institution tend to
observe us.It is a brilliant concept if you choose to overlook its
failure to accout for freedom. In this topic Focault began to explain
us what is panopticism. Then discusses Jeremy BENTHAM"S panopticon.
WHAT IS DISCIPLINE ?Descipline and panopticism are the reverse of avf
process by which rights are guaranted. The disciplinery society is not
necessarly one with a panopticon in every street it is throught
society.
I can say example from secondry school. We must sit with with whom
teacher want.I hate this. For me panopticism is very bad.

It was difficult to understand for me. But, I understood that human
need to life under the disipline. Technology is developing day by day.
It means that everybody can live with the disipline life. Why I
touched the Technology because if you are working in a big factury or
somewhere you are following by the technology. I think this theme is
good for human life. To understand this subject is wonderful for the
feature.

Firstly I have to said that, I didn't understand it very good. But, I
only understand that, It is about how to control Yourself. Becouse,
You are following in your every work but, firstly I think you have to
control yourself then you can allow others to control you. But, I
thinnk discipline is importand in our life. Becuase, if somebody
controling you it means that you havent got your own thoughts you
can't direct yourself, you dont know everything cant do anything. I
think it is Useful for our life for every round.

Hi teacher and my friends. Unfortunately this is my last answer to
google. But I loved this work. Thanks teacher!
According to questions I want to say that this article took from me 4
days to understand and to decide what to write. But anyway I liked his
thinking and thoughts about panopticism. This subject was new for me.
As I understood panopticism consists on disciplinary society and
surveillance. This theory served to control number of people under
surveillance. And also these number of people consisted society. From
this point of view everyone who believed that someone or somebody
looked after him or watched that person would be behaviour very good.
Discipline not only sets rules, tradition also demanded to obey these
rules. Disciplinary society existed when all member of society inside
had discipline. This society does not behaviour very good not only if
there will be surveillance. Without surveillance society can exist.
Because every member has discipline inside. For author panopticism is
a notion which can be seen as control power. Maybe through this idea
many people always limited their desires and actions. Mankind is the
notion that if he/she thinks that there is no rulers or no control
over him/her that can be end of this person. Sometimes thinking that
somebody watching us this idea keep us not to do bad mistakes in our
life. Mainly author gave example from spectacle. He said that in stage
actors tried to do their best to get more attention. Because they have
a lot of observers. Also human kind tried to think like that. Some
people think that all these rules I mean discipline are nonsense. But
for me all these have very importance. We can do many things if some
rules and discipline do not follow us. Maybe this disciple as author
said gave safely life for us.
In our life there are many kind of events. When I was a child
approximately 5-6 my grandparents always said me that one person
always followed you and if you told us lie this person would say us. I
believed this until 14 year. Now I have also this habit that someone
always followed me. I think that this sense always keep me to do wrong
things and actions.

It's one more different kind of article I've ever read. Actually it's
very important topic to discuss for nowadays. 'Panopticism'. What does
this word mean? It means that one, one group or more than one group is
controlled. This term became known during 18th-19th century when
plague was spread. As we know it's very dangerous disease and
government made some rule to overcome this tragedy. Because without
any discipline people couldn't get rid of this disaster. From this
point of view we see that one more term comes into being related to
panopticism. This term is 'discipline'. It's rule low to manage one
organization, society, government and so on. Discipline is one more
important thing to be successful in life. Because in my opinion, it's
somehow order and without order one can't be successful. I want to
give example from history. For instance, in disorder period no society
can gain its goal or flowered. Because there is no discipline and of
course no rule to obey.
In my opinion discipline is very important for each organization or
society. For example, we need it in different kind of branch, in
governmental branch, in education, in prison, in medicine and etc. In
one word, we need discipline as water or bread to feed.
For putting discipline into practice we need one thing-'surveillance'.
What's surveillance? It's observation, control over people to gain
discipline. If ones see that they are controlled, they will attention
to their behaviors. From childhood we have surveilance of our parents
over us. Of course it has some benefit for our life to choose the best
way. Because in this way we know what's good and bad for us by our
parent's advice.
Nowadays surveillance puts into practice in different ways. Because of
rapid improving of technology, we are controlled by cameras,
cellophanes and etc. Of course it has good sides. Because by this way
we pay attention to ourselves. But sometimes surveillance takes us to
gulf and we make nonsense on observation. I don't want to go so far
for giving example related to our topic. Because our university is
perfect example for panopticism. We are controlled by cameras from
different sides. We can't escape from our behavior. What we did is
seen and it made our job easier in some cases. Before we had some
problem with stealing. But these cameras made us to overcome this
problem easily.

hello to everybody, i also apologize for lating. Panoptisicm is very
difficult materiel but in my opinion it is such as dicipline that the
people live witth rules which it was achived by goverments, for example
you show us prison and prisoner live with rules and they obey these,
These rules control to everbody also the society. I can say that in
our country there are many disipline that control our behaviors and
give a chance that we live freedom. TODAY IS 31 MARCH, in 1918 bad
nations our enemy armenies killed many peoples children old and
youngers, but we cannot prove that SOYKIRIM, becouse some
organizations like BMT ignore I THINK THAT THIS IS DICIPLINE

Hi,everyone.
This is the one of the interesting and important topic for discuss. As
i understand here, government built a building with a tower at the
center from which it is possible to see each cell in which a center a
prisoner or person is incarcerated.Visibility is a trap. Each
individual is seen but cannot communicate with other prisoners. The
prisoner can always see the tower but never knows from where he is
being observed. This structure was built when the plague-stricken town
and the panoptican represent transformations of the disciplinary
programme.
As we see here that, surveillance make the disciplinary society. But in
Foucault's panoptican disipline is so strict. But if we look real life
we feel that we are free and we can do anything we want but it is not
like that. We can say that it the same thing that have great influence
on individual.
For ex: My parents, espesially my mum brought me up in like that, i
couldn't do anything without her orders. For ex:if i go to my
relative's house, i couldn't take anything from the table,even if i
was hungry till the hostess offered something to eat. But if i did it
in another case, my mum would punish me at home becouse she knew that
everyone looks at me and pay attention to me.
Or another example:In a lot of foreign countries it is normal to sit
on greens near the street, or eating in public places etc but in our
country we cannot do it. We know that people people look at us and
observe and in that situation people will think not good things about
us.So to have observes make the discipline in society. So with the
disciplinary power, people control themselves, pay attention ther
behaviours, dresses, speech etc, becouse you know that everybody looks
u.
Foucault's panoptican's context looks like George Orwell's 1984. In
each society has strict rules. Big Brother, which is called government
put telescreens, cameras to each room and observes enerything. Even
try to gain each individual's mind.If Party says that airplane
invented after the revolution it means that all proles must accept
this fact which true only for Party. But this discipline involved
people to bad side.It made horror in society.
But Foucault's disciplinary society wants to erase illness, also try
to increase economy, educational system etc, even it is also strict.
So at last I want to say that discipline is important in our life in
another case everybody will react how they want and this can couse the
destuction of society.

Hi, my friends!

Foucault says: "There are two images of discipline. At one extreme,
the discipline-blockade, the enclosed institution, established on the
edges of society, turned inwards towards negative functions: arresting
evil, breaking communications, suspending time. At the other extreme,
with panopticism, is the discipline-mechanism: a functional mechanism
that must improve the exercise of power by making it lighter, more
rapid, more effective, a design of subtle coercion for a society to
come". Yes, discipline is very important. But not very strict. Because
in that case a person cann't move freely, be ashame, cann't say what
thinks. It must be in right way.
Discipline is done with the Surveillance. It is good. Because a person
doesn't do strict mistakes. For example, when I danced in the scene,
my teacher looked from the curtain to us. Knowing this I tried not to
do mistakes.

HELLO FRIENDS
By discipline I understand a set of rules imposed on people of a
background and the process of carrying out the rules. The society
which is under a kind of discipline is a disciplinary society.Or a
society formed according to discipline is a disciplinary society.
Surveillance is watching society carefully in order to discover cases
when rules are not obeyed. Surveillance is to make sure discipline is
working well.
Spectacle is something you watch .you dont respond the events on the
stage.Nor does a discipline committee.Unlike, it surveillance is for
responding to cases when a rule is broken. It shapes our lives ,people
try gradually to obey discipline, that is,they get the feeling of
panopticism..So surveillance is a part of discipline.
When I was a child my parents told me not to smoke and they caught
me smoking a few times. So after that I lost courage to smoke even far
from them because I believed that they they would know that at once
and punish me.Now I am grateful the panopticism which kept me away
from cigarette.

We can't imagine our life without rules. Rules shape our life. We
encounter rules at home, school, work etc.
Government apply regulations and punishments This is a discipline. If
there is not discipline in government everything will reduce and begin
revolts. Discipline is a force but useful force. Police supervise or
control and arrest people who break rules. This is surveillance.
Congress or parliament controls. If control is fair disciplinary
society appears. In disciplinary society the social
forces( production, economy, education, public morality) strengthen.
Disciplinary society doesn't mean threatened society, control under
punishments. Disciplinary society consist of penetrate; clever people
who are calm but can protect own rights. In disciplinary society most
people know his own duties. I think Japanese society is more
disciplinary than other societies.
Actors play their role very attentively in the stage. Because everyone
look at them. Person must live in life as actors in stage. He or she
must feel that can't hide anything. And I think this is spectacle.
I live with my friends. If we break plate or cup we must buy two of
the same things. Last year I broke two cups I bought four cups. I
became bankrupt. I tried to be attentively. It seems there is
development after punishment. I broke only one plate last
week.

Teacher I am realy sorry for I was so late. this writing might be
unaccepted, but I would be really happy if you read and accept it.
Thanks,,,
The whole text is talked about panopticism, its theory and how it was
applied to the society.Panopticism is a theory which is based on
concepts of observation society. If we look at th word of panopticism
atentively, we can observe the word has 2 parts. 1.Pan which might
taken from word ''pane'' (a pane of glass). The other part of word is
optic connected with eye. Now let us have addition of these word: Pane
+Optic = Panopticism= Surveillance. You may have a question why I make
equality between Patopticism and surveillance. Now, let us have
flashback to XVII century. At that times, there were spread out
plague . Ordinary urban papulation forced to have disciples and
panishments according to government. And this ruled syndics and
intendants. Sysdics observed and surveillance people and their home.
They controls their house. They lock the doors and gave keys to
intendants. Syndic always controlled housekeepers whether they are
their home or not. If They could not find them at home ,then they
could be panished for that. Because nobody could go out of home.
Because, it was dangerous not only for person who went out,but also
for the society. You know plague is infectious. So, 1 is whole, and
whole is one. Syndic surveillanced them by calling their name, people
who are home came to close to the window. By this method syndics made
an account of people. If someone could not seen on window ,then
syndics searched about those guys whether they were ill or die. But,
intendants controlled syndics works how they worked on their
task, whether they obey their task or not. So in that point, we see
syndics and intendants were surveillance the people lived amount of
time when there were existed plague. Panopticism seems to be equal in
that point. Both of them have observation of other people. But,
Panopticism is more large concept. And surveillance include in
Panopticism. In other word, surviellance is one part of panopticism.
Panopticism has also talk about discipline and disciplinary society.
We talk about plague . And when it was excist there was not theory of
panopticism. Plague was push for appearance of theory of Panopticism.
It was Bentham who wrote about concept of theory of Panopticon. He
only make a theory but doesn't spoke about panopticon which could
applied in a different sides of life. It was Facault who spoke about
panopticism and its effects on schools, hospitals, prisons. He spoke
about disciplines which is one of the branch of panapticism. He
discribe disciple as a power having 3 cretetia.1. a power at lowerst.
2. the social power to their maximum intensity. 3. he liked this
economic growth with education, military, industry, medicals. You see
he wants to discribe about disciplenes in a good way . Facault wants
to say it is inportant fos society to have disciplenes. Discipline is
applied with power. First power. Facault also wants to say disciplines
is not only important for individual ,but olso for community. And
with disciplines society might have reach to his high levels. In order
to avoid from guild , it is important to have same rule to obey. And
disciplines is good reason for it. Disciplines also having applied to
society and its organisation make economical development. In other
word disciplinary society make its developement stage. Let us thing
about schools, hospitals , prisons. And you could observe each place
has its own disciplinary rules, So every body knows his ,her own
place. Teacher, pupil as pupil, dostor as doctor , patient as patient.
And their own actions and speach is differrentiate with one another.
For ex. Doctors act as doctor because , they make Hippocrate swear.
And as discipline ,they prefer always their own conscience.
Let as speak about spectacles. Yes, Facault speak about spectacle as
other part of Panopticicm. People from the past, espesially actors ,
feel themselves as a main apparatus when they are on stage. They
controll their action , because they know all audience look and
observe them. But sectacle is not only about stages. It could be
notted to telescreens, televisions to. For ex, From G.Orwell's
<<1984>> , there was telescreens ,which observe party and it members.
The party members also payed attention to their actions , speach ,
mimics at their home. They were observed by telescreens at their home
too.
2) I want to speak about one television programme called
"Qafas" (means cage). It was game. There were young people ,staying one
big home for several weeks . they were obsereved in every room by
telescreens. And each week , television show them ,and their all
strange actions. At the begining of game, people who was on game ,
payed a great attention for their actions, speaches. But then they
began to forgot about telescreens , and feel themselves free, do and
acted however they wanted . If seems to me strange ,they acted as they
are at their home. This game teach me , Person could show his or her
real face soon or late even if he \ she under strict disciplines.
