Hello dears!!!
In her article R.Lippi Green writes about the ways how children discriminate-discriminate the world around them lets say.
2 years old children can't leave home to discover the world, people, culture, traditions, language, characteristics of other people around them. But they are eager to learn everything. And I think they have to+.in order "survive"... So the only way to do it is to be glued on TV :) like we all do. "For many, especially for children it is the only view they have of people of other races or national origins".
Generally children acquire the world and people either by personal practice or by watching and listening TV programs, movies, films, cartoons and etc.
In her article Lippi Green mainly analyses Walt Disney's movies. They are famous all over the world. From these movies children learn about love, friendship, braveness, good/evil, homeland, race and so on. But the interesting thing is the way how we do it. How we discriminate good and bad character? Which values/features belonging to them help us to realize it? We can catch it from different sources, but Lippi Green explores variations in language that characters use in Disney movies as the basis for understanding bad characters.
Her question is "is (the way bad characters speak in Disney movies) part of how children learn to assign values on the basis of variation in language linked to race, ethnicity, and homeland?" Due to her study we can say "yes" it is so.
Language is like "a tool in the construction of character". Language variation and accent gives us information about "regional loyalties, ethnic, racial and economic alliances. The way characters use the language "pounds the message" about their characterization. "Disney films employ accent and dialect to drow characters and stereotypes". For ex, in all movies we see that characters use English. But they do it differently: different according to their social status, according to races, nationalities, gender, age.
According to Lippi Greens study, good (positive) characters speak English natively. But negative characters -bad guys- use different English accents. These bad guys are usually foreigners like, Arabs in "Aladdin" and Jews (in the representation of wolf) in "three little pigs". Almost every good character uses native English, fluently and bad ones use it with accent. "This pounds home the message that people with foreign accent are bad" (Precker 1993a) .For ex, in some movies we see French characters. They use native English; they are described as "rich people and aristocrats" it employs the cultural stereotype about the French people on children.
Language difference can function as the basis that provides children to select between white and black: "in general children who have little or no contact with African Americans are exposed to a fragmented and distorted of what it means to be black. Based on characterizations which rest primarily on negative stereotype linked directly to language difference".
From the language of the characters in the movies children acquire gender difference too. Usually the language that male and female characters use is different: "+while young lovers are presented in idealized form both physically and linguistically, in later life stages these same kinds of characters are not quite so narrowly drawn. The picture of motherhood portrayed in these animated films excludes careers and work outside family in home and clings very closely to language varieties associated with middle class norms and values". (Page 498). "+.those characters who have the widest variety of life choices and possibilities available to them are male, and they are speakers of MUSE. (Page 500).
Recently I have watched "Ghetto". I gave it to my friends to watch too. It is a film about the theatre that was built by and belonged to Jews. But during the WW2 it was occupied by German nasists and was nearly to be destroyed when the member of that theatre - a Jew actress Xayya- rescued it and her friends -actors and actresses that worked with her in the same theatre with her beautiful voice. Here Germans are given as powerful, strict, strong, rich ones. They are cruel and criminals. But Jews are poor, powerless people. From their appearance, behavior and life style we can see unequal values of differences in power. At any moment Jews can be shoot by invaders. Here both sides use mainly English to communicate; but sometimes we see that when actors want to criticize the invaders they use (in a satiric way) their accent- their tone of speech. Also sometimes invaders make a joke on Jews: they imitate Jewish accent in order to laugh and hurt them. after watching the film I understood that not only plot, events, appearance, but also the language of the characters can reveal lots of things about the characters.
See you.

hi to everybody. :-)

What is panopticism? Panopticism is the theory in which M. Foucault discusses power and discipline, their manipulation and effect on society. Panopticism is when people feel they are observed and are being watched at every moment, they feel that always someone watching to your every move. They feel it when they are not observed also. It's depending from the human's psychology. People's behavior always changes depending where they are. If they are at home they are a little easy, if they are outside they control their behavior, pay attention to their action. With other words there is a power, psychological power, which controls us. With other word we discipline our behaviors. In his article M. Foucault describes ways of disciplines, how people can be disciplined? Discipline is the methods of controlling and training of behavior and teaching self-control and acceptable behavior. Discipline are set of rules to which people must to obey.

From the childhood our parents tell us what to do, how to behave, what and how to say, they always try to control us. They always tell us what truth is and what is wrong. But when they'll become elder they will to discipline themselves. We can meet discipline everywhere, at schools, hospitals, works, home and so on. The discipline makes people more successful, workers in work, schoolchildren in schools, and businessmen in their business and so on. Discipline is important for society, without it society can become disorderly. If people live disciplined society, they will live more safe society, there are will not many crimes. Not only family can influence our behavior, other influences can be religion and also government. Religion tells us what is sin and we try don't do it, or government says that it's illegal and we try avoid from it.

All people can meet panopticism in their life, I also. I grow up under control of my parents; they always tell me what is wrong, how to behave depending where I am. They want I become much disciplined girl; they wait from me good behavior. And I try becoming how they want. Sometimes they so influence me that, when I stay at home alone I can't feel easy. I begun to think now mom will come and rebuke me, why I spent my time for nothing, why I speak on telephone to much. I always liked to read at night work of art, but my mom didn't let me. Why, because it was not healthy for my eyes. She always checked me before go to sleep. But when she went to sleep, I switched on the light of lamp and I begun to read. But always afraid mom now come and takes book from me. But now we grew up and we have different feelings. For example, first to go out I look to mirror hundred times, if there is something wrong. I don't want people look and laugh to me. And I always try to look good, because I think people always observe me+.

1.Firstly I'd like to thank our teacher for choosing such a topic. I
was interested in the origin of the word "PANOPTICISM" and found out
it where to come. The term was taken from the Panoptican
(prison)that had a guide tower in the center from where outside was
seen but, the prisoners were unavailable to see in, therefore they
didn't know whether they were being watched or not., According to my
view panopticism is a feeling that moves inside of human beings
but Foucault acknowledges that in disciplinary society
surveillance is conducted through a system of permanent
registration.
"The relation of each individual to his disease and to his death
passes through the representatives of power ,the registration they
make of it,the decisions they take on it " (chapter 2)reflects any
more the people are disciplined by the rulers .They wanted to see
the result of the perfect disciplines. But Panopticism is the
idea that our society is a mirror for the government to observe our
actions if they choose. However in panopticism to break low is
sometimes not morally wrong. For example Crossing the road in red
light isn't morally wrong for a car that carries a sick person. Or
vice versa give your place an old women isn'written in low ,but it
is morally acceptable. Because you feel that you are observed by
people around you and they except you to do it.

2.For when I was at the secondary school I had feeling in my
brain that the pupil may dislike me because of my curly hear that
is why it took me a lot of time to comb my hear ,as a result I was
late a lot. Nowadays this panopticism still goes with me and clearly
I acknowledge that the reason to be late to your lesson is to work
with my hear a lot.............

First I want to say that this subject is interesting for me
because it is necessary for our daily life .If we think that
there is a town and in this town plague appeard so something will
forbidden in this town .And also this town will be in quaratine
untill infected houses ,streets .Each governent will control
the places and people. It means all people will move another
places. If somebody carry the sick this person will bury.During
this period inspection search everywhere . Everybody under the
control of goverment . As we see plague make dicipline appear.
That time "diciplinary society " appear .In this society all
people are protected by goverment ."Pure community" and
"diciplinary society" is important in our life
If we want dicipline in our society we'll not need
plague .What is the "dicipline" ? Untill our death we live under
the dicipline . But if we aren't live under control of dicipline
our life will be disorder . When we were child our parent
contol our life style .Also we may give definition for dicipline
as "life style".Now day we aslo live under the dicipline because
we go to university every morning , we make our project etc.
Dicipline is everywhere in school , university , factory , every
compony , goverment , business .Self dicipline makes human beeing
to control themselves in our society .Society surveillance is
controlled by police .Dicipline is some main rules in our
social life . We control our life by helping of dicipline .May
be dicipline depend on societies mentality or low system . The
effect of dicipline is fit for our life style .Panopticism is
a social control , it is based on surveillance . People govern
themselves according to law .For example if we are live under
the dicipline it doesn't mean we'll punished by other people or
goverment . We live "diciplinary society" it means this is
standart of our life . During my school time all children must
get up at six clock ( 6:00 a.m) and we must wear school
uniform it is the rule in our school .Not wear the uniform
but get up at six clock is so difficult for us .

OK........ :)
When we say discipline, ruling, limits or etc. people think that there
is no need to talk about of them. Person thinks that he can live
without any rule and can find his own limit himself. But is it
possible? OF COURSE NO. Any society or any culture has to be
discipline. All limits in our society make us to control ourselves. I
think by discipline people think about what they can do and what they
have to do. I hope I can explain myself. I mean when there is no
disciple we can do everything we want and when we want. It doesn't
matter it is right or not. From Foucault's article I understand that I
am right in my thoughts. If I get Foucault's point correctly he means
rules make people think in other word it influence people thoughts.
And if you want control someone you need to make rules. But
controlling someone is not taking his freedom. You just make a limit
over this freedom. And disciplinary society is the perfect society. Of
course without SURVEILLANCE no one can control anything. If you want
discipline you need surveillance. BUT again there have to be limit. As
I said before controlling is not taking independence. Again there you
need rules. I want bring an example from our university. Let's compare
our university with others. In our university there is a strong
disciple. And I think it is one of the reasons of why our students are
different from other universities students. We live in the same
country in the same culture but our behaviors are different in the
university. I think everybody knows how the student's behaviors from
other universities are.
PANOPTICISM- at first I think Foucault brings a great example from the
prison. It is controlling of something or someone. Let's me explain
like this. For example country consist of a lot of little societies.
And if there is a discipline in each of this society it means there is
a discipline in this country. And it is strong country. And if you
want discipline you have to make rules and control them. And and if
you want take the control of them you need panopticism. I want to say
that all these conceptions depend on each other. Without any of them
you can not get anything. But again I want emphasize EVERYTHING HAS A
LIMIT. ALSO DISCIPLINE , PANOPTICISM ETC HAS TO BE A LIMIT. As we
understood from the writing in some years some people use all these
conceptions in wrong side. Because of this reason there is have to be
a limit.
Anyway I hope I can explain myself.
GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!
