to Rhetoric Of Fiction
According to Psychoanalytical criticism in Literature, newborn
baby's brain is called "tabularasa" (but I might have mistake), that
is like a white blank, it could be filled in anyway. R.L.Green touched
thislike problem at her study, showed the segregation to various
nationalities, races, regions etc. draw by film directors.
To Green, childrens' only way to world out are TV films, Video
cassettes, etc. In these films they see the differences, and these
form or affect their worldview, attitudes to different people who is
not native speaker; "children learn not only how to use variation in
their own language, but also how to interpret social variation in the
language of others", so language plays an important role in this
issue. Green did her research especially at Disney cartoons or movies.
These films are mainly watched by children, they're taught to
discriminate through these films unconsciously, that MUSE speakers,
americans most times are positive characters, non MUSE speakers bad.
Children evaluate them from this point: Russian characters spy,
German&Japanese II World War soldiers, Arabian hostiles etc. Maybe
film directors do it to make their characters memorale, but it affects
children negatively.
Summary:
According to author, characters with positive actions are the
speakers of MUSE, with negative actions related to specific regions.
Women-Men: Men with good aspects, they can do everything, rise and
fall, but women static, they have less possibilities, they are good
house workers, etc.
Currently the film I watched is 300 (three hundred). Main character
Leonidis, king of Sparta, is definitely good, he speaks fluent
english, no negative aspect about him, but the negative character
Zerxeer, with full of negativeness, speaks poor english. Its
maintained through the all film.
