The Elizabeth A. Beland
Gallery at Essex Art Center is pleased to present At Home: New Work by Heidi Hogden.
Heidi Hogden’s large-scale graphite
drawings depict scenes from her Wisconsin
home, specifically animal life and the surrounding landscape. Ultimately, an exploration of memory and
longing, these meticulously executed drawings bring the viewer into the
intimate world of Hogden’s home place - two deer fighting, a fawn left for the
day by her mother, tucked into a nest of camouflaging grasses, a view of the
sky up through prairie grass.
From her statement:
This body of work consists of a series of graphite drawings on paper
that investigate the area around my home in the township of Franklin, Wisconsin.
Each work presents a unique interpretation of the land by
using photographic source material as inspiration. Through the process
of drawing, I revisit the landscape of my childhood as it was, as it is and as
I imagine it to be. This pursuit has led me to not only explore my home, but
the home of other inhabitants. In this work I interweave notions of familiarity
and distance with intimacy and
voyeurism to reconstruct memories.
Heidi Hogden studied painting and
drawing at Minneapolis College of Art and Design (BFA, 2008) and studio art at
the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in affiliation with Tufts University
(MFA, 2012). She received the President’s Award in the Painting Area Show at
the Museum School
(’12), studied in Italy with
a Montague International Travel Grant (’11) and was featured in The Boston Globe’s “6 Art School
Grads to Watch” article (’12). Recent exhibitions include “New
Talent” at Alpha Gallery (’12), “42.88°N, -88.01°W”, MFA
Thesis Exhibition, at the Aidekman Arts Center (’12), “Topographies of
Space: Between Somewhere and Nowhere” at the Museum of Fine Arts,
Boston (’12), “Proof of Purchase” at Sampson Gallery (’11 and ’12), and “Boston
Young Contemporaries” at 808 Gallery (’10) among others. In addition to
instructing art workshops, Hogden is currently a Post Graduate Teaching Fellow
at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
