I would like to fasten the jib to the deck using  a longer length of cord taken forward to the eye right at the front, using a bowsie on this cord to enable the height of the jib above the deck to be adjusted.

Is this legal?

Hi Dave,

Sorry but the way I read the rules suggests that you can't use that method of jib swivel attachment for racing within the Restricted Class rules:

"F.3 Jib Attachments The Jib Boom may be attached to the boat by a line tied around the boom between Boom Bands SR2 & SR3, then through Deck Eye 2 and lead backwards and secured around Deck Eye 4 (which may be converted into a hook as described in Rule C.4)."

I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but nevertheless, I hope this helps.

Take care

Joanne

Thanks Joanne, as expected to be honest, I will just have to learn to tie my knots more accurately!

Tie the line to the jib boom between sr2 & sr3,using a clove hitch, tuck the free end under sr2 silicone tube and make sure that sr2 & sr3 are pushed tightly together to trap the clove hitch and pull on the free end of the line to take up the slack. Treat the other end as recommended, with a loop. I have used that method on all 3 rigs for 2 years and never had it slip yet, even in a gale on a C rig. If you want to adjust the height for any reason, just separate sr2 & sr3 a bit, then adjust the clove hitch.

As far as I can see, it is entirely legal as it uses a knot to fasten the line to the boom.

David.

Going to revisit this sorry if some might think its pedantic!

F.3 Jib Attachments The Jib Boom may be attached to the boat

My query is the use of the word "May" rather than "must" surely this leaves the door open for alternatives?

I think you are missing the point.

The rules state that NOTHING can be changed from that described/supplied by the manufacturer unless specifically mentioned in the rules or the hints and tips. Rule F3, in effect, states that you MAY vary what the manufacturer recommends in the way described.

In other words, build the boat according to the manual, unless you are given the option to change it in the Rules or Hints & Tips.

David.
