How do you upload an document to a container field

Is there a way to perform uploading of file to a container field using
Rails?

Not possible as far as I know. I believe that is a limitation of
filemaker. You can however link to remote files via a file reference
and store files on a remote server or some other workaround...

I would think you could upload a file outside of the FileMaker realm and create a record in FileMaker with the URL of the file's location. You could easily use a FileMaker webviewer for FileMaker Pro/Go clients to view what was uploaded.
