to Risk Management in Lending to Agriculture
Dear Colleagues,

We are now ready to launch the discussion forum and would very much
welcome your contributions. This said, we are very keen to maintain
the focus on risk management in agricultural lending and to explore
and learn more about practical experiences in this area, successful or
less successful, and would therefore like to invite you to report and
discuss predominantly matters based on facts and real cases.

In addition to the below indicative list of questions, we would also
like to invite you to take a look at the abbreviated conclusions from
the Johannesburg meeting in order to get a feeling about what other
issues would be of interest.

- Given that the main financial risk facing rural financial
institutions is credit risk, what are the main and most common credit
risk management techniques used and what are the factors that
contribute to a successful credit risk management?

- On the specific topic of agricultural insurance that has gained much
attention over the past years and yet face several difficulties as to
the implementation of commercially viable programmes of benefit to
farmers and insurance companies alike, to what extent has insurance
facilitated access to capital which is necessary to support investment
in the agricultural sector, and what strategies need to be developed
to link agricultural insurance with other risk management tools (such
as warehouse receipts, forward sales, contract farming, and capital
markets) along the value chain?

Looking forward to your posts.

Regards,

The RFLC Team
