Hi All,

Isabella Bannerman kindly directed me to the fantastic Save Reynolds Field
website which states all the main points with excellent research. Thanks to
everyone who has worked hard on this.

http://www.savereynoldsfield.org/

I will be sending this to everyone in my contacts list and posting on my
facebook page, and encourage everyone else to do the same as the vote
approaches.

Yeah, the site is pretty clear and does a lot of what you were asking for, Kate.

I think the main issues are:
1. Artificial turf is synthetic: unhealthy for people and the environment
2. This is expensive
3. This is not friendly for mixed use - destroys a beautiful park and commons

The pro side:
1. Window to get state funds
2. Sports people want it

I do wonder how much antipathy toward the project there would be if they had opted for grass, or chosen to delay the field surface decision until later. I guess the million-or-so difference in cost had to be accounted for up front.

Thanks Doug, And I would add:

The artificial turf is expensive to maintain.
It needs to be replaced after 10yrs or sooner.

It is not actually easier or less costly than grass to maintain, and is not
a 'final' solution to field maintenance issues in the long term. (Contrary
to what its supporters would tell people.)

Also, there are likely to be hidden or unforseen costs, and these may have
to come from higher taxes if they exceed the amount in the bond.

In addition, the construction will be very noisy and disruptive to the
neighbourhood.

And, removing a large expanse of grass and trees that contribute to our
fresh air by taking in CO2 and releasing oxygen, can only make less fresh
air available to the athletes and community members using the track/field as
well as the surrounding community.
(of course that comes under negative Environmental effects)
