The save as command shows up on the command line like you would expect, but no dialog box appears for me to select a location and enter the new name. It just sits like that until I hit esc at which point I am able to work on the opened file like normal and save that file like normal.

I know this chain is super old now but I had this problem and your "FILEDIA set to 1" solution worked! I had never had that happen before so just out of curiosity what would have caused the dialog box to become suppressed like that? Thank you for this information even 9 years later!

AutoCAD has a tool called SYSVARMONITOR, start it up, you'll see this variable in there (stock install unless you removed all the entries in it): activate it and have it ready to help you catch changes to this and a few other key variables that you feel you must have on (or off).

when tryin to open a DWG file, I start the Autocad LT 2024 application, and clicked the "Open..." button, expecting to see a windows explorer browser where I will navigate into the location of my DWG file. But instead Autocad prompted me to "Enter name of srawing to open :", and even if I memorized the location of the folders, it is still an unreasonable method to navigate through the folders as if we are in the 80's. The same happens when trying to save a file, it asks me to enter the full location in which I want to save it.

I know I can access my files through actual windows and just start them up, but I find it easier to use it through the Autocad application, not to mention when I will want to save new files, I will have to reach the location in which I want to save it and start coping the address back into Autocad... a whole mess.

I was wanting to save my toolbar setup and commands,or the way my screen looks. Do you do that in the options, profile section. If so do you just name the current screen shot as something and export to safe place. I have done this once before but some one else helped and cant remember all the steps... Thanks in advance!!

You can create a workspace and save it. Once it's saved you can use it all the time. It will save your toolbar placement as well as which dialog boxes are open. Just remember, any changes you make, do a saveas and overwrite the previous workspace. Just type in "WORKSPACE" and go from there.

It's a good idea to have a backup of all of your custom files, so that if anything were to be corrupted you don't lose production time. I keep all of my custom stuff in an aptly named 'Custom.cui(x)' file.

This does not overwrite my drawing template that i use does it? Sorry for too many questions, i have one set of toolbars saved in the options, profile tab. I believe it has an .arl extension or something similar. This workspace though where does it save it too! I tried doing that and backed out before comepleting. Will it eventually ask where to save to? Thanks again.

No it does not overwrite your template. Your template file is a DWT file. The Workspace is saved in the currently loaded CUI file. The ARG file is simply a Profile which again has nothing to do with Workspaces. Hope this helps.

I tried using the workspace and everything went back to original setup, No toolbars , etc. So i imported the .arg file of my toolbars and it came back, dont know what i did wrong, during the workspace command, i think it asked if i wanted to replace and i said no, and it reverted back. Does that sound right. Gonna have do some research on this workspace command before i do anything apparently, i dont understand the command completely.... Ty for the quick reply...

People very often confuse ARG profiles having a direct association with Workspaces, which is not the case. However, there is a variable that can automatically save the changes of Workspaces to the ARG file which is the only association I know of. From the help menu:

Workspaces control the display of menus, toolbars, and palettes in the drawing area. When you use or switch a workspace, you change the display of your drawing area. You manage your workspaces from the Customize User Interface dialog box.

Profiles save environment settings including many of your user options, drafting settings, paths, and other values. Profiles are updated each time you make a change to an option, setting, or other value. You can manage your profiles from the Options dialog box.

When you make changes to the drawing display, the changes are stored in your profile and are displayed the next time you launch the program, regardless of your workspace settings. The profile changes are not automatically saved to a workspace unless you select the Automatically Save Workspace Changes option in the Workspace Settings dialog box.

I just happened to read through your post, as I'm researching workspaces. I can't help but notice how wary you seem of trying things (I guess for fear of messing up your AutoCAD?). Let me tell you, don't be afraid to try new things, thats how you learn... At my first CAD job we would sometimes have a week or two of down time, and I took that time starting on the menu at File Open, clicked to see what it did, and proceeded to go down the line clicking and exploring every possible thing in AutoCAD that could be clicked. I'm now been responsible for creating and design of completely customized sets of standards from the ground up for two major companies. Of course I've has lots of schooling since then, but by dissecting AutoCAD and not being afraid to try things I had a very solid knowledge base right from the starting gate. Good luck with what you were doing, and don't be afraid to just jump in there.

A bit more complicated you can have multiple profiles that do certain things including reading different custom.cui on start up these are simply accessed by copying the desktop icon and changing the properties line /p mynewprofile etc The first thing we do is have a custom icon and put the default one out of harms way makes it so much easier to get Autocad working agian for the guys with 11 fingers who screw it up.

I use Autocad to work on files I have stored and shared here in Dropbox. My Autocad is set to save every ten minutes. I also manually save very often because I've learned a valuable lesson once when we lost power and my battery backup (UPS) didn't work. Hours of lost work is not fun so I constantly save to avoid losing work. With that being said, I frequently get an error "Unable to save to drawing C:\Users\xxx\Dropbox\thedrawing.dwg. Drawing saved to C:\Users\xxxx\Dropbox\sav###.tmp. This is filling up my Dropbox Folder that I'm working out of with all these *.tmp files. Is anyone else experiencing this problem and what can I do to remedy it? I shouldn't have to monitor my account for these *.tmp files.

It seems that those files are automatically generated by another application, not Dropbox. If that's the case, I would recommend you to contact directly with the support organization of that application to ask for further instructions about how to prevent those files from being created or how to make the application to store them in a different location.

I don't think you understand. The *.tmp files are created and saved to my Dropbox folder because Autocad was 'unable' to save the original file, which is on Dropbox, in the first place. A .tmp file is created and stored to Dropbox when this happens. Usually, but not always, after the second save attempt, the file saves to Dropbox. I stress, not always because sometimes, I have to try to save 3 or 4 times before it actually saves the original file. In the mean time, after each failed attempt, a .tmp file is created and stored in my Dropbox Folder. Autocad doesn't have this problem saving my files anywhere else. Take for example, if I work on a file that is stored on my Hard Drive or on our Company Network, Autocad never, I repeat, never has a problem saving the file, never gives me an 'unable to save' error message, and never creates a .tmp file because it was unable to save the original. On the other hand, working on a file or files that are stored in my Dropbox Folder, numerous times throughout the day, after trying to save the file or files, I get this error message. And since Autocad couldn't save the file to my Dropbox Folder, a .tmp file is created and stored to Dropbox. So why would you consider this an AutoDesk (the maker of Autocad) problem? Isn't Dropbox supposed to be an extension or similar to an external hard drive? In the mean time, my Dropbox Folder is filling up with these .tmp files which I have to manually delete at the end of the day. The only solution I have to remedy this situation is to work on the file locally, then save it to my Dropbox Folder at the end of the day. But that doesn't do much good when I make numerous changes to the drawing throughout the day, yet the other 6 trades I'm collaborating with don't see those changes till the end of the day. I guess it's the best I can ask for until a real solution to this problem can be discovered. But I doubt Autodesk will have the answer. This, I can almost certainly say, is a Dropbox problem. Here's another example, from software that is not created by Autodesk. Cadpipe is software that I use to draw 3D Piping Systems for large buildings. Cadpipe uses a Database that it loads at startup for it's pipe dimensions, fitting dimensions, what type of material the pipe is made of, such as copper, cast iron, pvc, etc. This Database is critical for Cadpipe to properly work. The Database File I point Cadpipe to load through it's .ini file is stored on Dropbox. Cadpipe can never load this critical database file directly from Dropbox. It gives me an error also. Yet I'm looking at the file right now. It's there. The only way I can get Cadpipe to load this database file is to copy it from my Dropbox Job Folder over to a folder on my local Hard Drive or my Company Network Job Folder and load it from there. The Problem with this is, when I work at home, I don't have access to my Company Network, forcing me to save the file locally at home also just so Cadpipe can properly work. Are you going to blame this one on Cadpipe? As with a lot of software companies I've dealt with over the years, when I point out a bug or flaw, it never seems to be their problem, it's always the other guys problem so it never gets looked into, therefore, never fixed. We shall see if I have these same problems if I were to start using Box.Com or Wuala.com, or Google Drive, Sky Drive, or Team Drive or any of the numerous other alternatives that are out there.
