Hi Neighbors,

We’re considering replacing our gas oven to an electric oven, but my husband says that we’d need an electrician to wire the kitchen for 220V.  Does anyone have experience/advice on this?

You might also have to upgrade the electrical panel going to your house. How big is your electrical service now? If it's already 200A, you are probably good to add the 50A circuit for the stove. But if you only have the original 100A (or less) you'll have to bump up the PGE service at the same time.

Yes, stove will require 220V, and heavy gauge wires. The existing wires are not adequate for the 50A circuit since the houses weren't built with all electric in mind. Maybe people added a 220V dryer over the years, but even that would not have the appropriate gauge wire as well as not being wired near the kitchen.

If it's helpful, I've heard very good things about this new all-electric stovetop company / product out of SF: https://www.impulselabs.com/

It's something I've considered for ourselves in the future, and because it uses a built-in battery to buffer the power, it doesn't need 220V and can run off of regular 120V.

I’ve also heard great things about impulse stovetops, not that it helps you with the oven question.
