Enablehas a number of senses, most of which are some variant on allowing someone (or something, such as enabling cookies on a computer) to do something. In the past several decades, enable has also started to take on a new associated sense in the field of addiction studies, where enabling is viewed as giving misguided support to a person with some substance-abuse issue. A person who facilitates the self-destructive behavior of another is referred to as an enabler.

As an individual contributor I have been a very good problem solver. My solutions have been - pick your buzz word - "out of the box", "creative", "innovative" etc. For most of my life I defined myself and my success by how good a problem solver I was. It didn't matter if this was work related or something else. When I started getting injured playing tennis, I spent a lot of time reading up on chronic vs acute injuries, trigger points, inflammation, cold vs. heat therapy, kinesio taping. When I played a tennis match, I would deconstruct my opponents strengths and weaknesses to come up with a winning strategy. If I had a customer that didn't get the value proposition of my product, I spent time understanding their need, what value we added and went back with a solution. If there was a problem I wanted to find the solution.

Lately, I have been involved in finding solutions to problems that require people to adopt the solution. When it was just me, it was easy. When it comes to a group of people, it doesn't work that well anymore. I could come up with the best idea or solution and everyone would agree that it was the right thing to do, but 'change' did not happen. It has made me question my approach and I have realized that while being a 'problem solver' is good, to drive change across groups you need to be a 'solution enabler'.

Being a 'solution enabler' means that you don't have to be the one with all the ideas. You want to facilitate others coming up with the solution. By letting go of being the 'smartest' person, I can get more people involved. What this then leads to is that the people affected by the change feel ownership of the solution. Which means they will probably adopt it as it is their idea. What was even more insightful was that often the solutions a group came up with was way better than anything I could think of. My solutions were good but theirs was exceptional. Sometimes I would come up with the first iteration and then it would take a life of its own.

I am realizing that this new skill is probably a lot more valuable than being the problem solver. To add to my earlier post about 'People power - what should a manager do' - I think being a 'solution enabler' is a key skill for managers. People are awesome and given the freedom will come up with real solutions that they will adopt. It also is less pressure on managers as they no longer have to be the ones to come up with the ideas and then find ways to motivate their people to adopt those ideas (back to the carrot and stick approach).

I have AutoCAD 2022 and 2023 installed. I previously had Advance Steel 2022 and 2023 installed, then the obeject enablers broke. I uninstalled all Advance Steel products and deleted folders related to Advance Steel for a clean uninstall ( -...).

Then I tried installing 2023 first. With the 2023 OE installed, the 2022 OE installer says "Already installed - Autodesk Advance Steel 2022 Object Enabler is already installed on this computer." But AutoCAD 2022 still can not show Advance Steel objects.

FYI for future searchers... I started a support ticket and Autodesk support advised that it is a known issue with the Object Enablers. However, the Advance Steel software itself does contain the Object Enabler and installing Advance Steel 2022 and 2023 allow both version of AutoCAD to display the Advance Steel Objects.

From Support: "For now, the easiest method to overcome this issue is to install the Advance Steel 2022 Full product (even Trial version) on that computer. The AS product comes with an OE built-in; so basically you will not need to install AS OE anymore. The OE will work without opening Advance Steel on that computer, no license is needed for AS."

I am happy to inform you that this issue was fixed, and starting today a new Object Enabler for Advance Steel 2023 is available in your Autodesk Desktop Application or Account page, which will no longer break the 2022 installation.

I am opening .dwg files created in Autocad plant 3d 2022 in Navisworks 2023 manage, but some objects appear as wireframe, I am missing the object enabler but I can not find one, the 2022 version which I found here -autocad-pla...doesn't help.

Which brings me back to the original question: if I do already have the proper object enabler installed, why am I seeing wireframe fittings in Navisworks unless I export to AutoCAD from Plant 3D first and then open the file with Navisworks.?

When you have your file loaded in Navisworks, you can also try checking the scene statistics. Scroll through the entire list and see if there are any Errors called out. That may give you a bit of help.

Enablers are captured in backlogs as a type of Epic, Capability, Feature, or Story. They are used primarily for exploration, architecture implementation, refactoring, building infrastructure, and addressing compliance. While their type is unique, they are managed similarly to customer-facing backlog items.

Architects often define and guide enabler epics, features, and capabilities. They might be Enterprise Architects supporting the portfolio, System Architects supporting ARTs, or Solution Architects supporting Solution Trains. Architects steer enablers through the appropriate Kanban system and backlog, guiding implementation from concept to delivery. Agile Teams also use enablers; enabler stories emerge locally from their needs and are carried in the Team Backlog.

In an even broader view, there are typically many technical possibilities for implementing an identified business need or opportunity. Those alternatives must be analyzed and are often evaluated through modeling, prototyping, Set-Based Design, or the Lean Startup Cycle. Exploration enablers formalize these activities, assure that the work is visible, and help ensure solution development is closely aligned with the needs of customers and stakeholders.

In SAFe, Agile Architecture practices produce architectural runway, the underlying technology that enables Agile teams and ARTs to deliver business solutions quickly. But the runway is constantly consumed by business epics, features, capabilities, and stories, so it must be extended for new functionality. Architectural enablers are used to build, extend, and maintain the runway.

Architectural enablers can also address problems with the resiliency of deployed solutions. After implementation, these enablers often reflect Nonfunctional Requirements (NFRs) imposed on future backlog items. NFRs often originate as architectural enablers and grow as a set over time (Figure 1).

Agile development requires frequent integration. Agile teams integrate their work and showcase the working solution increment at the System Demo. Similarly, ARTs that are part of a Solution Train integrate their work as frequently as possible during the PI in preparation for Solution Demos. Infrastructure enablers provide the Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment technology that supports this aggressive integration cadence.

The System Team is integral in defining and building infrastructure enablers that enhance the development environment and streamline the CDP. Shared Services, Operations teams, and Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) leverage infrastructure enablers to deliver Cloud services that accelerate solution development and solution scalability.

By incrementally building the necessary artifacts in the solution intent over a series of PIs, SAFe supports continuous verification and validation. Verification activities are conducted as part of the development workflow and are often enforced in the Definition of Done (DoD). While the artifacts will satisfy the objective evidence needed at the end of development, they are created iteratively throughout the life cycle. Validation occurs when Product Owners, customers, and end-users participate in ART planning and system demos, validating fitness for purpose.

Enablers supply critical, foundational technology and insight into the value stream. Consequently, they deserve focused attention in the portfolio, from budgeting and capacity allocation through delivery and ongoing improvement. But because the actual value of enablers is tied to the realization of future business objectives, care must be taken to implement enablers quickly and iteratively. Otherwise, delivering value to customers can be significantly delayed, undermining the fundamental purpose of enablers.

Enablers of all types should be implemented incrementally. However, because architectural and infrastructure enablers often influence the delivery and operation of mission-critical solutions, they deserve special mention here.

The work must be sequenced to ensure the system can continue operating in the current environment while enablers are implemented. That way, teams can continue to work, integrate, demo, and even release new functionality.

By creating the technology platforms that deliver business functionality, enablers drive better economics. But innovative product development cannot occur without risk-taking. Therefore, initial technology-related decisions cannot always be correct, which is why the Lean enterprise must be prepared to change course occasionally. In these cases, the principle of sunk costs [3] provides essential guidance: Do not consider money already spent. Implementing incrementally allows corrective action before the investment grows too large.
