Dear Ann An exciting announcement...We’re delighted that Naomi Long MP, prompted by our campaign, has secured a debate on ‘Persecution of Christians in Africa and the Middle East’ in Westminster Hall on 16 April. This significantly increases the impact of our campaign on behalf of our persecuted brothers and sisters in Africa and the Middle East, not least because a Foreign Office Minister will be obliged to speak on behalf of the government, and highlight how the Foreign Office is dealing with this issue! The day before, the Foreign Office will launch their human rights report – so the debate will be a timely opportunity to once again emphasise the importance of the right to freedom of religion and belief. It would be great if you could hold this process in your prayers. We’ll be in touch next week about how you can invite your MP to this debate! ...and a big thank you! It’s an exciting time for campaigners. Last month the UN agreed a Commission of Inquiry into human rights abuses in North Korea; yesterday they agreed an historic Arms Trade Treaty! Many have faithfully campaigned for these advances for countless years. And now they’ve happened. Praise God – what encouragement! Change happens when people identify a problem, pray, speak up, and insist that things should be different. So I just wanted to say a big thank you to all of you who wrote to your MP this month, for letting them know that Christians face widespread persecution and for suggesting that the UK could help stop this! It’s been great to see the positive responses coming from MPs – thanks to all those who have sent them through. Here’s just one, so that you can share in the encouragement: “I must confess that I was unaware of the extent of this type of persecution or of the number of countries where it is taking place. Apart from the mindless and needless violence it really does make one consider the strength and dedication to Christianity that ordinary people have when they risk facing this type of abuse in their own country for their beliefs. Thank you for raising this extremely important issue with me.” It’s essential to make sure that our politicians are well-informed about the importance of – and need for – freedom of religion and belief. Thank you all, once again, for keeping this on your MP’s agenda. I hope you have had a blessed Easter! Zoe B Advocacy
