In the spirit of 4th of July, the DWF team is pleased to inform you all about the availability of Project Freewheel, posted yesterday to the Autodesk Labs site at http://labs.autodesk.com.

Project Freewheel frees users from needing to download and install plug-ins or viewers to see information made available in DWF.

It enables anyone to view and navigate designs using only a standard web browser – no specialized software or dedicated viewers to install, and without requiring the use of plug-ins or controls. By simply visiting the Project Freewheel web site, users can view DWF files posted anywhere on the internet. Additionally, web developers can take advantage of Project Freewheel to embed interactive DWF viewing in web sites and web applications.  Users will be able to navigate full designs in a high-performance, high-quality viewing experience using any platform or device capable of browsing the web. The difference between this technology and implementations based on AJAX, etc. has to do with speed and fidelity

Project Freewheel is based on our DWF technology and is our latest example of software delivered as a service.

This currently is a technology preview.  We are inviting a limited set of users to try this out right now.  The first release has certain limitations (2D DWF files only, and only works with IE 6, etc.). Project Freewheel will continue to evolve over the coming weeks to support additional DWF capabilities, include more browsers, and demonstrate increased functionality.

We invite you and your extended teams to give Project Freewheel a test drive. Simply point your browser to http://dwfit.com and load a default DWF file. Besides viewing the DWF files posted there, you’ll also be able to view DWF files posted anywhere on the internet by simply entering the URL.

Let us know your thoughts, reactions, and suggestions.

Let the fireworks begin.
