Attendees at the first-ever National Zero Waste Conference, March 18-19 in Berkeley CA, are promised an inspiring keynote speech on The Future of Wasting Less in America, by Mike Sangiacomo, the CEO of West Coast hauler and Zero Waste leader Recology. Sangiacomo is a strong supporter of putting the California Recycling and Plastic Pollution Reduction Act of 2020 onto California’s November ballot.
The legislation will ask voters to grant state regulators the power to charge producers fees as high as one cent per package for selling single-use plastics and require packaging to be reusable, recyclable or compostable, creating momentum for the Circular Economy and a path to a Zero Waste future.
“Recology sees a world without waste” is the 100-year-old company’s published vision, and under Sangiacomo’s leadership, Recology has advanced recycling, composting, renewable energy, land stewardship, sustainable fuels, water conservation and other sustainability measures within its own operations. Sangiacomo is expected to provide conference attendees with further details about how the Initiative, which could generate several billion dollars annually if adopted, will fund programs intended to not only reduce waste and increase recycling, but also protect water supplies and restore habitats, benefiting Californians, state flora and fauna, and the entire world.
Recology provides materials collection and processing, product sales, and education to more than 140 communities throughout California, Oregon and Washington. As the largest employee-owned company in the waste and recycling industry, Recology strives to reuse and recycle materials that were once considered waste, reduce landfill disposal, and promote healthy, sustainable communities.
Sangiacomo’s Keynote speech at the National Zero Waste Conference will be on March 19th, 2020 at 8:45 am at UC Berkeley.
Zero Wasters who like to avoid wasting money are advised that the discounted registration window to receive $50 off the National Zero Waste Conference closes Monday, Feb. 17th. National Recycling Coalition members will still receive $100 off their registrations. All members of official NRC affiliated state Recycling Organizations are NRC members.
