October 2013
Changes
We've had a lot going on at the store, and if you haven't been here in a week or two I'd suggest taking a look. The front counter is in a new spot, thanks to the work of several committed volunteers.
We're also lucky enough to be getting a new mural painted on the front of our building. Not a month after Rochester Artist's Networking Group (RANG) completed their piece combining inspiration from Rochester's landmarks and our e-waste collection in the back, a group of painters from the City of Rochester's urban art team approached us about painting words on the building. Lead by Shawn Dunwoody, this group has been given the job of placing highly-visible, thought-provoking murals in city neighborhoods. Naturally, when we were asked what we want to say to several tens of thousands of drivers every week, Ben Franklin seemed appropriate. Come check it out.
Work should be finished as of this week. Back inside, you'll be seeing new shelving, signage and hopefully some new vendors as we try to upgrade our shopping experience here.
Coming up soon: the launch of our Tool Library. Do you have any gently-used tools cluttering up your garage or basement? We will gladly take them. Feel free to drop them off during business hours, or give us a call at (585) 288-7564 if it's a large item.

I can't change the world but I can make a difference
Since 1989, the International Coastal Cleanup has become one of the hallmarks of the Ocean Conservancy's work, growing from 12 sites along the Texas coast to more than 6,000 sites in more than 100 countries. With the help of the more than 9 million volunteers, we've been able to remove over 145 million pounds of debris in just under three decades.
But there's still significant work to be done.
Locally in 1993 Jamie Romeo came home & told her mom & dad (Kimie & Paul) that the beaches needed cleaning up. Jamie helped to started the Rochester Coastal Cleanup. http://rochestercoastalcleanup.com/
On September 18, 1993 I volunteered for my 1st coastal cleanup at Durand Beach. My friend Stephanie told me I'd find a lot of "beach whistles" (used tampon applicators). Since then I've volunteered every year - I've met a lot of children & their parents. It's been very heart warming to see the dedication of people over the years. It seems to me the amount of liter on the beaches has declined over the years. Hopefully people are understanding the connection of what they throw in the water doesn't go away - it eventually ends back up on the beach.
This year my friend Rick joined me out at Braddock Bay. There was also a Girl Scout Troop who volunteered. We found a bike which I donated to R Community Bikes. http://www.rcommunitybikes.net/

Recycling vs. Zero Waste… What’s the Difference? For decades, “green” minded individuals were taught to “reduce, reuse, and recycle”. Today, many sustainability-centered efforts focus on the ‘recycle’ part without as much effort on how to ‘reduce’ and/or ‘reuse’. However, a new campaign is underway to strive for “zero waste” with the focus on ‘reduce’ or ‘refuse’ & ‘reuse’. At today’s market, learn about ways to move toward zero waste at home, at work & at school.
