Eager to kick off this year's materials exchange season, the NYC WasteMatch team was excited to start off the summer right with a large donation of wood working machinery from the Williamsburg High School of Architecture and Design. Some of the machinery which needed a home included, a Delta 20 Bandsaw; Maple Wood Countertop Workbench with lockers; Delta 10 Unisaw Table Saw; and, a Max Spindle Wood Sander. Although there were 35 WasteMatch members who expressed interest in the machinery, the lucky recipients were the great folks of the North Brooklyn Boat Club (NBBC).
The NBBC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enabling and advocating for human-powered boating on the waterways of Newtown Creek which borders north Brooklyn and Queens. The organization enables local citizens to be effective stewards of ecology, recreation and freedom that the waterways engender. Fung Lim, the facilities wood boat artisan and guru of NBBC, was nice enough to take a few moments out of his time to educate our visiting NYC WasteMatch team member about the organization and how the boating community will benefit from the donated machinery. Going to good use, this machinery will be used to rebuild, repair, and remodel vintage wooden boats along with wooden canoes and kayaks.
NYC WasteMatch could not be more proud to have helped facilitate this exchange. Not only did the match divert over 2 tons of valuable equipment from the waste stream, but it also helped promote the sustainability of another valuable stream-NYC waterways. NBBC, like many other organizations that use NYC WasteMatch, rely on generous donations to keep their organization afloat. This goes to show how diverse the reuse sector is becoming!
P.S. Next time you are looking for an exciting activity, visit NBBC to learn how you can start your paddling adventure! Not only will you learn something new but you will be supporting a nonprofit that is paddling for a cause.

ReuseNYC lauches first ever
NYC Thrift Store Day!
This August our sister program ReuseNYC launched New York City's first annual Thrift Store Day. This event, in observance of National Thrift Store Day, sought to promote reuse and its many contributions to NYC fashion, culture, economy and the environment, while at the same time introducing residents to nonprofit second-hand stores they might have overlooked in the past. Over 40 retail locations, all of whom are members of the ReuseNYC program, took part in the celebration by offering sales of up to 25% off storewide.

Member organizations of ReuseNYC not only work endlessly to prevent valuable materials from entering the landfills, they also turn your donated items into valuable environmental, economic, and social services for New Yorkers. Those of you who donated and shopped at participating stores on ReuseNYC's Thrift Store Day were not only able to load up on useful or fashionable items at low cost, you also also supported these organizations efforts to help others.
Participating organizations for ReuseNYC Thrift Store Day included:
Way to go you all! Thanks for helping save the environment while providing affordable goods and social services to New Yorkers!

Setting Us Apart
NYC WasteMatch finished its fiscal year strong, diverting over 200 tons of waste from the landfill in the last quarter alone! And we could not have done it without you, our members...
As we continue to grow and work towards helping the city meet its solid-waste diversion goals, we would like to remind you of how important it is here at WasteMatch that you help us keep track of all successful exchanges we make together. It takes all of us to make WasteMatch flow smoothly, and like the saying goes, "it takes a village," so please, if you post a listing for "wanted or available" items please keep us posted on the progress of things. As many of you know, we are a FREE service, committed to helping the city divert reusable items from the landfills, and being able to describe our collective efforts will help us promote those efforts and create a cleaner and healthier NYC.
Also don't forget: should you need any additional assistance in finding a home for your donation or looking to receive specific donations -give us a call. Our staff is here to help, that's what sets us apart from the other online material exchanges!
