Agenda:
1) prioritize currently open trac issues
2) discuss deferred tests
Hi All,
I'd like to give you an update on funding, budget and the direction we
received at our BOD meeting this week.
So far, the budget submitted by the BOD has not been approved. Mark did
say that we had funding to proceed immediately on the following compliance
items:
1) defects/bug fixes
2) deferred tests
During Mark's NAR Report, he informed the BOD that he would like RETS to
take a different technological direction. To that goal, version 1.8 which
will incorporate the outstanding RCPs would be targeted as the last 1.x
release.
Mark envisioned that 1.8 servers would be in the market for another 3-5
years. To that end, NAR is committed to fixing defects and supporting the
server compliance testing tool. However, our scope of new functionality
would be limited; new tests for 1.8 would only cover "MUSTS"; there would
be no new tests for optional functionality.
We were directed by Mark that the following items would as such not be
funded:
1) Compliance tests for the Update specifications, as the implementation
of Update is optional.
2) Re-architecture of the compliance tester to make it possible to add
tests non-programmatically.
3) Client testing tool.
I look forward to talking with you all this afternoon, so we can begin to
get our open TRAC issues resolved.
Best,
Paula
Could you give us any clue about the " different technological direction
"?

The BOD has not seen any details yet, but if you look at the March RETS
agenda, Mark will be doing a presentation on this topic during the general
session.
There is also the newly formed R&D group where I expect many of these
directions will get developed.
I made a presentation at the BOD this week that noted the following:
1) Great progress had been made implementing the 1.X version of RETS
2) The 1.X specification was originally developed in 1999
3) It would be wrong to stop the 1.8 process because so many great additions to the standard were submitted as RCPs.
I then talked about the future. Perhaps now is the time to take a look at the needs, players and tools that face the industry. We will probably find that some of the assumptions made in 199 have changed. A workgroup was formed (as Paula noted) to start investigating the landscape before any decisions are made. The R&D workgroup will begin by examining the stakeholders and documenting their motivations and common business use cases. I believe that 2010 is the year that RESO should invest in examining what lies ahead for the next decade.
The changes that will be incorporated in RETS 1.8 will still require documentation, implementation and compliance changes. RESO recognizes this fact.
The R&D Workgroup is a prudent business path and hopefully their work can provide the basis for our next steps.
