Real world application of the KIO

Came across this video from someone I subscribe to on YouTube, it's a credit card terminal teardown, based on a Z80 CPU and a KIO.

Unfortunately it's very brief, but hopefully Fran will do a more detailed teardown.

Looks like Verifone put a KIO in the later units.

How to play with and program the earlier Tranz 330 units.

This reminds me of the three Z80 controllers for Matrix Platemate I bought ( https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/retro-comp/0XO4bdqJiro ).  This morning I traced out the power & ground and the transmit & receive of the Z84C15.  Replaced the EPROM with my own diagnostic W27C512 that prints out endless string of sign-on message.  It works, the power consumption is about 90mA @ 5V.

I think I'll disable the KM62256 RAM (32Kx8) and piggy back a 512K RAM over it and enable the banking control with some of the KIO PIO outputs.  Should be able to run CP/M on this board.
