Death By Fungi fits musically somewhere between Botch, Coalesce, and Deadguy. The lyrics on this EP dwell on personal suffering as well as, in the case of the title track, a particular suffering lived by Bombay populations whose lives are marred by violence, pollution, and class and religious divides.

The band members are Vrishank Menon on guitar, Aryaman Chatterji on drums, Kamran Raza on bass, and Tabish Khidir on vocals. Vrishank took some time out during touring to answer a few questions from RebelNoise.

I think our old drummer came up with it. We don't really know what it means or why we stuck with it. It's just a weird name, and we felt it was a good contrast between what we were doing and the wannabe-serious shit that metal bands were doing.

If you were to compare us to our hardcore contemporaries, False Flag, Pacifist, and the Riot Peddlers, they all take after a certain hardcore subgenre. For example, the Riot Peddlers play old-school crossover thrash, while Pacifist play post-hardcore. We play more 90s metalcore/mathrock with post-hardcore and skatepunk influences. I grew up on skatepunk, so we tend to write super-fast songs.

Your songs tend to evolve quickly, switching between driving riffs and dissonant, spacious chords. The tempo changes frequently, too. What is your songwriting process? Do you write independently and bring your ideas to the other band members? Or do you write together?

Aryaman, our drummer, and I write the songs together. Either he has a drum riff idea or I have a guitar riff idea, and we write the song from there. The writing all happens together, and we develop the song together. We write a part and then come up with a second part based on what we see from there. Sometimes one idea spills onto the next part, and we write the same riff into a different time signature or tempo.

There's a generation of Bombay people who come from that culture divide but see past it. I like to think we're from that background since, in our band, we have people from different cultures and communities, all of whom find community in punk rock and extreme music. Death By Fungi's members all come from different religious backgrounds (Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism) and varying levels of privilege. But we find common ground in being Bombay folk and in observing class and cultural divides as meaningless bullshit that the "powers that be" impose on the people to keep the working people enslaved. We see all of this as the work of large businesses trying to maximize their profit with cheap labor and politicians maximizing vote banks by drawing lines between people. The anger that comes of all of this makes its way into our music.

The fourth song, "Attrition," sounds noticeably different from the other three songs on your 2019 EP. The first two-thirds of "Attrition" sound more upbeat and melodic even while the lyrics remain full of regret and pain. Do you agree? What is the story behind the song's music and lyrics?

An older version of that song was first released on our debut EP, and it was written on a demo idea I had from 2011. So it's more skatepunk in its sound, and the lyrics are a little more personal because they were written in my teenage years. It was the first time I was opening up about trauma I'd experienced in my childhood. Recording those vocals was super painful because the guy recording us kept laughing and calling the lyrics "emo." On top of that, it was my first time recording vocals, so I was already shaken.

Anup Jalota, (born 29 July 1953) is an Indian singer, musician and actor, best known for his contributions to the Bhajan genre of Indian music. He is popularly known as the "Bhajan Samraat" (Emperor of Bhajans).[2] The Padma Shri was awarded to him by the Government of India in 2012. He was a contestant on the reality show Bigg Boss 12.

Anup Jalota was born in Nainital, Uttrakhand and hails from the Sham Chowrasi Gharana of Punjab. He was educated in Lucknow's Bhatkhande Music Institute. His father, Purshottam Das Jalota, was also a Bhajan singer. He also spent few years in Savarkundla, Gujarat in his early days. He has four siblings, two of which are younger brothers, Anil Jalota and Ajay Jalota and two of which are his younger sisters, Anjali Dhir and Anita Mehra. Ajay currently lives in California.

Jalota started his musical career as a chorus singer in All India Radio. He is usually backed by a santoor player, dholak player, sarod player, sarangi player, violinist, sitar player, tabla player and guitarist. Some of his popular bhajans include Aisi Lagi Lagan, Main Nahi Makhan Khayo, Rang De Chunariya, Jag Me Sundar Hai Do Naam, and Chadariya Jhini Re Jhini. He was also the presenter of the program Dharam Aur Hum, telecast in Star Plus from 2002 to 2005. He met Jagadguru Shree Kripaluji Maharaj in Mumbai and agreed to release several CDs of his compositions.[3] In 2008 he recorded the title song "Golden Memorable Yaadein" for the CD "Noorani Chehra", produced by Shaukat (Sam) Kassam to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of the Aga Khan.

Jalota's first marriage was to Sonali Sheth, a Gujarati girl who was then a music student and later a singer. They married without his family's approval. The couple became popular in the North Indian live performance circuit as "Anup and Sonali Jalota," which disbanded after their divorce.

His second marriage was an arranged one, to Bina Bhatia, which too ended in divorce. Anup's third marriage was to Medha Gujral, niece of former Indian Prime Minister I. K. Gujral and director Shekhar Kapur's first wife whom he had divorced in 1994. Anup and Medha have a son named Aryaman (born in 1996), who studied at Princeton University.[5] Medha died on 25 November 2014 in New York City of renal failure following a second heart and first kidney transplant.[6][7][8]

It came to light in 2018 that he had been in a relationship with Bigg Boss 12 contestant Jasleen Matharu, who is thirty-seven years younger than him. They had been together at least three and a half years prior. However, after getting evicted from the house, Anup said their relationship was only of a teacher and student.[9]

Kapoor described the music for Animal as "multi-genre" and "versatile".[1] The soundtrack was predominantly curated by Vanga himself, who insisted Bhushan Kumar, the film's producer not to interfere during the entire process and would rework on the album if disapproved.[2] Kumar earlier provided suggestions to Vanga for adding additional music in Kabir Singh (2019); this decision was applauded by Kumar, so that the music would be independently molded with the film's narrative.[3][4] The soundtrack accompanied traditional and electronic instrumentation.[2][5] The female singers perform the songs in lower octaves, while the male singers perform it in higher notes.[2]

The soundtrack was preceded with four singles. "Hua Main" was the first to be released from the album, on 11 October 2023.[6] It was composed by JAM8 & Pritam[a] and sung by Raghav Chaitanya with lyrics written by Manoj Muntashir. The music video shows the intimate romantic relationship between Ranvijay Singh (Ranbir)[8] and Geetanjali (Mandanna).[9][10] The song had similarities with "Kaala Jaddu" from the Kartik Aaryan-starrer Freddy (2022), that was composed by Pritam.[11]

The third song "Papa Meri Jaan" was released on 14 November 2023.[16] Composed by Harshavardhan Rameshwar, who previously worked with Vanga on Arjun Reddy (2017) and its remake Kabir Singh (2019), the song was performed by Sonu Nigam and written by Raj Shekhar. The song is picturized on the relationship between Ranvijay and his father Balbir (Anil).[17][18]

Post the film and the album's release, on 6 December 2023, the song "Jamal Kudu", played during the introduction of Abrar Haque's (Deol) character, was released as a single.[25] The song was originally composed by Iran's Khatareh Group. The original Iranian song is titled "Jamaal Jamaaloo" composed by Zia Atabay in the 1950s and was re-interpreted by Harshvardhan Rameshwar.[26] The song was first sung by Kharazemi Girls High School in 1970s. Over the years, the song became popular at Iranian weddings.[27][28]

The soundtrack to Animal was released at a music launch and fan experience event held on 24 November 2023 at Mehboob Studio in Mumbai. Presented by Spotify Premium, the event saw the attendance of Ranbir and Deol,[31][32] where the former had performed "Hua Main".[33] The same day, the soundtrack was released to music streaming platforms, while it was also unveiled in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.[34] The songs: "Arjan Vailly" and "Haiwaan" written and performed by Bhupinder Babbal and Ashim Kemson, were excluded from its South Indian versions.[35] A deluxe edition soundtrack featuring nine additional songs were released on 15 January 2024,[36] while in the South Indian versions, only three additional tracks were released.[37]

The film further featured twenty-seven songs in the background score, that was released as a separate album on 23 January 2024 by T-Series.[38] In the film, just before the interval, there's an action sequence where Ranvijay (played by Kapoor) wears headphones. As he fights, the background score features the Marathi song "Dolby Walya," playing through his headphones.[39]

Trisha Bhattacharya of India Today wrote "the album becomes an integral part of the storytelling process, mirroring the protagonist's journey through love, passion, heartbreak, and revenge. Each track is a musical brushstroke, painting the canvas of emotions with precision and finesse."[43] Amit Vaidya of Rolling Stone India listed "Saari Duniya Jalaa Denge" and "Satranga" as one among their "Top 30 Hindi Film Songs of 2023".[44] "Arjan Vailly" was listed by Sukanya Verma for Rediff.com and Devarsi Ghosh for Scroll.in on their year-ender lists;[45][46] Ghosh described the song's use in the pre-interval sequence, "touches a high that the rest of Animal and the soundtrack are hard-pressed to capture".[46]
