Dear Members The following 4 animals are strictly prohibited in Brahmin houses: Cat, Dog, Goat and Hen/cock. Even their dust/wind is not acceptable. As with any other rule, the sastras do not give any reason for this! These are banned. That is all! Only in the last 50 years or so, this practice of breeding Dog and Cat has crept into Brahmin houses. We will act as per sastras, if these are kept far away! It is nothing to do with love of animals etc as other castes are not prevented from having a cat or dog! This rule is only for Brahmins. Sastras only says that all Karmas are useless if done in the presence of these animals. But Brahmins have to do 3 kala sandya and so many other pujas etc every day. Hence the ban. Retgards, V.Muralidharan, govin...@yahoo.co.in Very interesting! Long live the vedas ! Basically I don't like pets , especially cats moving around the house .It keeps its mouth and smells everything when the master is not watching. It brushes its body on the wall, furniture & people and thus small body hair falls on the floor or moves in the air, which can trigger Asthma. Their natural habitat is nature, so leave them freely making a favorable environment for animals. A bird, which has to fly freely in the air is caught, its flying wing trimmed and sold as pet. If a pretty bird in the cage gives pleasure to someone's eyes, it is a torture for the bird. Same case with aquarium. Fish moving in a tank is found to decrease pressure and tension. Study shows that watching a swimming wish reduces our depression and fear.(Fish tanks are kept in the reception area of some hospitals, especially dental)Anyone thought how desperate the fish will be to come out and swim in a pond or lake? Cow is not like that. It needs protection and care. As it is useful, it can be bred. Moreover it is worshiped in Hindu religion - not seen as a pet( though any animal taken care with affection naturally becomes a pet) meenu rachana, meenu_...@yahoo.com From : T.N.Kumar Dear Members All animals which are kept as pet at home need to be taken care of medical or otherwise. Have not you heard of mad-cow disease due to which, in Europe, they have to kill millions of cows. Also, your point is confusing as you are contracting yourself. In posting of 25th Nov., you are comfortable to keep cows (as pet) at home. I wish to express in a different way. It is better we co-exist with the animals friendly or otherwise. I have heard of Snakes (Naga Pambu) were taken special care in some of the house hold as you will find "Shelter for Snakes" (Pambu Kavu) in the back yard of many houses and regularly they keep milk for the snake. Many of our ruling deities have their own quota of pets (vahanams) starting with Ganeshji with shroo as his pet, Subramania with Peacock as his Vahana, Lord Shiva has Nandi as his Vahana and snakes as his pet, Lordess Saraswati has Anna Pakshi, Lordess Lakshmi has white elephant, Lord Vishnu-Garuda, Lord Ram with Hanuman, The list is getting endless !!! In conclusion, Brahmins can breed pets at home. Thanks for your time. T.N.Kumar, tnku...@hotmail.com Dear fellow-Iyers There is nothing to prevent Brahmins from keeping cattle for milk and transport, oxen and horses for travel, even birds like peacocks and parrots. Always provided they can care adequately for these animals and birds (including veterinary attention, cleaning up, feeding, bathing, and disposing of their carcases when they die), and not let their Brahmana functions an d duties suffer. There is even an obligation to feed crows and sacred bulls. Our rishis often kept herds of deer at their aashramams. My own family, in better times long before Independence, kept a herd of elephants, which took part in the annual temple religious ceremonial show and procession of "velai". Mostly, they worked in the hills where our teak forests were. But they were available, free, whenever required by the temple. What is discouraged are animals that pollute. Dogs eat excreta. Cats roam around, kill and drag into the house and cache their kill, be it a bird, a mouse, a snake, Dogs and cats, even when house-trained, sometimes dirty the house with their urine and turds. Cats breed above ceilings, in inaccessible pockets in roofs, in inaccessible corners in homes, and dirty the places where they breed. Some poor families I have known, kept goats for milk. They could not afford cattle. Keeping chained animals for pure entertainment, like tiger cubs and civet cats, bears and monkeys, is terrible. Beware of snake and crocodile pets. If someone at home is attacked, it might result in death. And if your visitor's child is attacked.......? S Narayanaswamy Iyer, s_naray...@yahoo.com Once upon a time we had a dog as a pet. And other times I have been around cats, birds, lizards and fishes. Although i am an animal lover, from my experience I find it is quite unhygienic to have these animals around in a home.
