“All of us, blind and sighted alike, occupy the same position—we live
in interior worlds. We build inner realms from what we happen to hear,
feel, see…….

~ Douglas McCulloh ~

Photographer, writer, and curator, who lives in Los Angeles and has
spent fourteen years in conversation with blind photographers from
around the world

Contents

1. VISION 2020: THE RIGHT TO SIGHT

VISION 2020 hopes to prevent 100 million people from becoming blind.
It seeks to eliminate the main causes of avoidable blindness in order
to give all people
in the world, particularly the millions of needlessly blind, the right to sight.

2. RIO+20 OUTCOME DOCUMENT INCLUDES DISABILITY

We are pleased to share the good news that disability has been
included in the Rio+20 Outcome Document – a result of our joint

Nations and beyond.

3. BLIND PHOTOGRAPHERS: VISION, POLITICS AND EMPOWERMENT
by Douglas McCulloh, Los Angeles

Whoever controls the images, said American Beat poet Allan Ginsberg,
controls the culture. Blind photographers — a growing category across
the world — don’t just make photographs, they also stake a claim to
visual territory

4. TEACHING TENNIS TO THE VISUALLY IMPAIRED

Tennis for the blind was founded in 1984 by a Japanese man named
Miyoshi Takei. While a high school student, Mr. Takei designed the
equipment needed so that he could play tennis. The main piece of
equipment he made is a sound-adapted ball. Made of foam,
the ball contains a ping pong ball which has small metal fragments
that rattle upon impact.

5. AUSTRALIA’S FIRST BIONIC EYE HELPS WOMAN GAIN SIGHT

Agencies reported that a blind Australian woman can now see spots of
light after being implanted with an early prototype of Australia’s
first bionic eye. Dianne Ashworth, 54, was the first patient fitted
with the device in surgery at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital
in May. It was switched on last month at the Bionics Institute in East
Melbourne after her eye had recovered fully from surgery.

6. GENES CAUSING BLINDNESS DISCOVERED

Scientists have found new evidence that a type of glaucoma that mostly
affects Asians could be hereditary after they discovered three new
genes associated
with the disease.

7. CAMERA-TOTING EYE-RING COULD HELP BLIND PEOPLE SEE

A team from the Fluid Interfaces Group at MIT’s Media Lab has developed
a chunky finger-worn device called EyeRing that translates images of
objects captured through a camera lens into aural feedback to aid the
blind.

8. ARTIFICIAL RETINA TO RESTORE VISION IN BLIND

Scientists claim to have developed an ‘artificial retina’ which could
restore near-normal vision to the blind, a finding which can benefit
millions.

9. CHESS OLYMPIAD IN CHENNAI

The 14th Olympiad of the International Braille Chess Association
(IBCA) was held from August 9-19, 2012 at Chennai, India.
