The major hurdle according to me is lack of confidence in yourself,
because of the fear about how others will react to your handicap. The
society in general also does not accept you unless you prove yourself.
It took me a number of years before I could prove myself by giving
presentations and publishing papers in international journals.
3. LE CHAL: A HAPTIC FEEDBACK BASED SHOE FOR THE BLIND
Le-Chal is a way finding aid for the visually impaired that uses a
language of vibrations, complementing their natural adaptations and
extends their limitations..
4. AUTOMATIC DETECTION OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY
The International Journal of Computer Applications (Volume 47– No.19,
June 2012) has published a research paper titled ‘Automatic Detection
of Diabetic
Retinopathy in Non-dilated RGB Retinal Fundus Images’ by SujithKumar S
B and Vipula Singh, Department of ECE, R.N.S Institute of Technology,
Bangalore.
5. CHEMICAL MAKES BLIND MICE SEE
A team of University of California, Berkeley, scientists in
collaboration with researchers at the University of Munich and
University of Washington, in
Seattle, has discovered a chemical that temporarily restores some
vision to blind mice, and is working on an improved compound that may
someday allow people
with degenerative blindness to see again.
6. EYE HEALTH SURVEY
Even as India is home to one of the highest populations of the
visually impaired, eye health is the least priority for the population
here, according to
a recent global survey.
7. GENE CAUSING CONGENITAL BLINDNESS IDENTIFIED
An international research team made up of scientists from countries
including China, the US, Brazil, Canada and Australia has recently
found a new gene
that can cause congenital blindness. Congenital blindness is an
inherited retinal degenerative disease.
8. BLIND TO REASON
In a scathing editorial, The Hindu (July 28, 2012) explained how the
heavy hand of commerce had dealt a blow to the efforts of blind and
disabled people
around the world to get reading materials in special formats excluded
from copyright restrictions.
9. SAP LABS ISSUES BRAILLE SCRIPTED VISITING CARDS TO ITS EMPLOYEES
German ERP major SAP Labs India has issued Braille scripted visiting
cards to its employees. A visually impaired person has to sweep his or
her fingers over the back of the card to know the persons’ name and
phone number.
10. SMOKING AND BLINDNESS
According to a survey conducted on 200 smokers aged from 14 to 83
years, only 85 patients were aware that smoking caused blindness.
