Now that OS X Yosemite is available, many users may wish to create a bootable installer drive from something like a USB flash thumb drive or another disk. This allows for several things, the ability to upgrade multiple Macs without having to re-download the installer, the ability to perform a clean install, and also the convenience of having a separate bootable reinstallation drive in the event you need it for serving a Mac.

This is truly the best written, most complete, and best illustrated how-to on making a bootable USB drive. I followed it exactly and it worked perfectly. I now have a rescued-from-the-trash computer to donate to another student in need. Thanks!

Hello guys. Im a newbie to mac and ive got a real problem on my hands. I have a 2009 white macbook im trying to upgrade to Yosemite. However, I cannot boot into the macbook because I mistakenly erased my startup disk. Now I just made a bootable usb disk from a windows tool called TransMac but my macbook doesnt show this bootable disc when I try to install from it. Any help please?

Thanks for the info.
Is there a way to partition the USB so that the OS X installer only takes up the space it requires?
I have a 16GB usb drive, but would like to put both the OS X installer and a Windows OS installer on that usb drive in two different bootable partition. Is that achievable?

I find it smarter to just install Yosemite with the installer to an external hdd or stick (dont know the required size of the stick) then boot up the recovery partition on the external device and install/update from that, no need to use terminal, and you will have an external OSX to boot for diagnostic use as well (very usefull to recover data from an unbootable internal drive, test software before installing or simply just have your own OS with you whithout having your to bring your Mac ).

i have a simple problem
,my hard drive jus got damaged and had to change it and my imac is when i bought it used to run on os lion ( the old version ) and now i changed the drive but i cant download the lion cause its not available on app and i cant run another installer like yoso or other versions of macintosh what can i do ?
well i have only one imac and no more laptop to download or make bootable usb
what should i do ?

I recommend making one for Yosemite, on an external hard drive or USB thumb drive, for many of the same reasons I recommend making a bootable Mavericks installer drive: If you want to install Yosemite on multiple Macs, using a bootable installer drive can be more convenient than downloading or copying the entire installer to each computer. If you want to erase the drive on a Mac before installing Yosemite, or start over at any time, you can use a dedicated installer drive to boot that Mac, erase its drive, and then install the OS clean and restore whatever data you need from a backup. And if your Mac is experiencing problems, a bootable installer drive makes a handy emergency disk.

Apple released the new Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite in the Mac App Store for everyone to download and install for free on October 16th, 2014, but downloading a 5+ GB file for each of your computers will take some serious time. The best thing to do is download it once and create a bootable install USB drive from the file for all of your Macs.

Once you install Yosemite, the file will automatically erase itself, so it's important to make a bootable drive first. If you want to install first and then make a bootable drive, make a copy of the installer app in another location so you can access it later. Worst case scenario is downloading the large file again from the Mac App Store, but then why make a bootable drive?

Hello!!! I NEED HELP!! I know I'm a few years late but I JUST came into possession of a 2007 macbook (A1181) and I'm upgrading the RAM (to 4GB) and hard drive (to 500 GB). I was hoping to make myself a bootable installer of Yosemite but I cannot manage to find anywhere to download it. That is the only thing hanging up my adventure. I'd be open to any other macOS as long as it can run the newest iTunes. I'm wary of going too high since this laptop is so old and I'm pretty new to doing my own upgrades. THANKS!! :)

On the 14th March 2020 I wrote on subject that I can find yosemite in apple store of my macbook pro. And I download Yosemite from internet to make a bootable usb flash with install disk creator but it show me this message "It is lacking the file "Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg" then I follow this link "download OS X Yosemite" that Niel gave me a week ago, I use Safari browser download it on my macbook which the size is 5.72 Gb. Then I try to make it a bootable usb flash with the aid of install disk creator but it show me the same above message. Please help me out so that I can make a Yosemite bootable usb flash

I like to thank all this community member especially Noel the one that gave me this link ''download Mac OS X Yosemite'' and HWTech the one that talked me through, now I can make a bootable Yosemite usb flash and I even installed Mac OS X Yosemite on my macbook for the first time. Kudos to you all for speedy responds to solved my my broblem.

I assume you downloaded a .dmg file. Can you open it by double-clicking it? If so, is there a .pkg file? Double-click on the .pkg installer which should "install" the installer to the "Applications Folder" where you can then use the Terminal app to create a bootable USB drive. If, however, the system won't let you "install" the installer to the Applications folder, then let me know as I can provide some Terminal command to due it manually.

Thank you HWTech. I double click the .dmg file as you instructed. I found .pkg file and I installed it in the "application folder" please tell me how can I use the Terminal app to create a bootable USB drive

Hi HWTech. The link I used was the one Niel gave me which is this "( download OS X Yosemite )" I used Safari Browser on my mac with the help of Folx download manager to boost the downloading and I type this above link on Safari Browser then it take to Apple Upgrade site in which I clicked on it and it shows me some option in which I opened the 4th option where it asked me did I still need Yosemite OS X in which I clicked on it and it started downloading into my mac and when the downloading completed. i used it to create a bootable usb flash though the Terminal, and I installed Yosemite 10.10.5 on my mac and also install windows 7 through Boot Camp Assistance for the first time. Big thank to you for talked me through during the process and also my regards to all community member. Thank you all.

I did all this, however, I keep getting this message saying the copy of the installation can't be verified. I changed the system time as some posts online have suggested, but that didn't work. I've connected to WiFi thinking maybe the install requires a WiFi connection to verify itself. I believe the bootable USB is fine because it seems to complete the installation until the message pops up.

In regards to the USB, I've used made/used two already. I got the Yosemite application install file from a friend that claims it's worked for him ( I don't want to ask him for help as he is unwilling to do so). I then made the bootable drive using my 132gb USB drive and making it via terminal by using the following commands:

Further research suggests I may have to use a bootable USB with the OS X installer on it. I do not, however, have any other Macs in my home. I have tried using TransMac but the drive doesn't seem to be recognized as a bootable device by the iMac.

Use the Restore Disk Image to Drive dialog box to browse for the DMG file with the installation files for Mac OS X Yosemite in this case, and click OK to create a bootable USB of the operating system.

So I used the MacPwn tool which does all the hard work for you in making the bootable usb, I am able to boot up and get to the installation of yosemite but it gets to less than a minute remaining of the install and then fails with undefined error: 0

Everytime I have tried to install OS X Yosemite on my MacBook Pro, it sucks at 2 minutes remaining. In order to fix this, i have earse my HD and recover MAC from Internet. This have intstall OS X Mountain Lion on my MAC.
Please tell me how i install OS X Yosemite on my MacBook Pro as my internet speed is too slow and it takes almost 1 to 2 days to download OS X Yosemite.
Tell me if there is any img file of OS X Yosemite so that i will make a bootable USB of OS X Yosemite in order to install OS X Yosemite.

Second, Apple seems to be placing its standard boot loader for this type of configuration on the Recovery HD volume, which had previously been used for (as the name suggests) recovery tools (and also for the regular boot loader when the main partition was encrypted). Because I'd gotten many complaints about the recovery system showing up in the main menu list, I coded rEFInd to ignore the contents of this volume by default. Thus, fixing the first problem results in rEFInd working but not detecting the Yosemite installation. Thanks, Apple, for making it to distinguish between your recovery boot loader and your regular boot loader!
