Game Night
Join your Calvary and RUMC friends and family for our monthly game night! We will meet on May 18th at Janet Lehr’s house. Her address is 2948 Welcome Drive, Durham, NC 27705. We hope you will come out and learn a new game or enjoy an old favorite — invite a friend to join you — all are welcome!
Senior Adults Lunch for May
The RUMC and Calvary senior adults will meet for lunch on Wednesday, May 22 at 11:30 am at Cracker Barrel, located at 3703 Hillsborough Road in Durham. We hope all the senior adults will come for a great time of fellowship together!
Third Sunday Lunch
Remember to put May 19 on your calendar and plan to eat lunch out following worship. We will eat at the Blue Note Grill in the Rib Room.
SUMMER CHOIR SCHEDULE
As has been our custom at Calvary, the choir will begin a summer break from 9:30 rehearsals the first Sunday of June. (Choir, please note that the regular schedule continues through the entire month of May.) Instead, we will gather at 10:30 on Sunday mornings in the choir loft to review something from our repertoire to sing that Sunday during worship.
HANDBELL RINGING OPPORTUNITY
Wouldn't it be great if the handbells could ring during worship some Sunday this summer? We have music for four people ringing eight bells that would make this possible. Debby and Larry Molnar can be two of those ringers so we would only need two more but it would be better to have three or four other volunteers. That way, Larry can direct rather than ring and Debby can be a backup in case someone has a last-minute conflict and can't ring that Sunday. If we could assemble six ringers, we also have some music for twelve bells.
We're estimating a three-week commitment with rehearsals at 9:30 AM on Sunday mornings. These would begin in June when the Choir is on summer break from rehearsals. We'd ring during worship following the third rehearsal. You don't need to be an expert music reader but a basic understanding of the fundamentals of rhythm (number of beats in a measure, duration of quarter notes, half notes, dotted notes, etc.) would be helpful. If we have people who are brand new to handbells, a preliminary introductory session could be added before the whole group convenes. We can coordinate the specific Sundays involved once we know who is participating.
Speak with Larry or Debby Molnar during the month of May if you are interested in being part of this. An email to LDMo...@nc.rr.com would be most useful so we can keep you informed as plans evolve and the schedule is clarified
Bible Study at Calvary—Next Meeting is Thursday, May 23
Pastor Chris leads a Bible study at Calvary on the second and fourth Thursday of each month. The class begins at 1:30 and wraps up around 3:00 pm. You will find the study in Room 204 in the Education Building. Although the current group is all folks who are from Calvary, RUMC folks are welcome and encouraged to join in!
MASS RALLY FOR $15/HR AND UNION RIGHTS IN NC MAY 23
When workers who don’t have the right to a union are forced to scrape by on minimum wage and face attacks on their union, it holds us all back and lowers standards across the industry. Unless working people in NC can win unions, our economy will stay rigged and working families will keep falling behind. Our only shot at making sure everyone can have a decent life is to raise wages and make it easier for workers like us to join unions again.
Join fast food, other underpaid workers, and community members from across NC for a rally and march in downtown Durham.
Supporters of LGBTQ+ Full Inclusion
As we are preparing our activities for the NC Annual Conference to resist the Traditional Plan, the leadership team of Sacred Witness and the Reconciling United Methodists of NC (RUM-NC) wants to hear from you. Your voice is important in a very critical moment in the life of the UMC, and you can share your voice through this survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SacredWitness2019
Please forward this link to others. Also if you would like printed copies, or have any questions about this survey, please email Caleb Parker at wcp...@gmail.com with the subject line "Survey".
