Would it make sense to specify some things about a non-mandatory
client container for handling callbacks, distributed transaction
state, encryption facilities, etc?

Of course this would be a very micro container, perhaps a plug-in for
a web server?

Isn't this more an implementation detail of the client rather than the
protocols/interfaces we're specifying?
