THE RAGNAROK STRATEGY

Obviously, this is going to be based around rushing to the Mythic age to get the Ragnarok God power as fast as possible. Ragnarok is the God power of the mythic age Norse God, Baldr. You can get to him through either Thor or Odin. Ragnarok has the remarkable effect of converting every gatherer and dwarf in your kingdom into a Hersir hero. Obviously a highly offensive God power, and also a heavily gambling one, as you are guaranteed to screw up your economy completely with it. Against an unprepared opponent, it is devastating. It is NOT for players who like defence this is all about offence, all the time. Without good raiding its impossible to win because your opponent will be able to build up too much in advance, and once you cast Ragnarok, a moment without bloodshed is a moment closer to your defeat. For my version of the strategy, we want to use Thor as our major God. This is because of the discount he receives in building dwarves and we want to spam out dwarves and gatherers as quickly as possible, and as many as possible in preparation for Ragnarok. Your God path for this particular strategy will look like this:Thor Forseti Skadi BaldrFirst off in the archaic age, dont use the Dwarven Mine God power right away. It can be mined faster than regular gold and we want to save that for after Ragnarok, when we need to recover our economy quickly. You do want to research Thors Pig Sticker bonus quickly though. It is very helpful in gathering food early on. Search out gold mines and mine like hell. You do definitely need to scout and control gold mines for this strategy, you will need a lot of gold. Dwarves cost gold, as do all military units, and the more the merrier for when Ragnarok comes around. If at all possible try and save the Dwarven Mine God power. If you can save it until after you cast Ragnarok, your economy should be unbreakable. Make your way to Classical as quickly as possible. Ill also mention now, though it should be a painfully obvious thing, get 10 houses built when you can. And dont forget to build towers. In the Classical age, you get Forseti as your God. Use the Healing Spring God power at your convenience. Remember that the spring cannot be destroyed, and whichever player has the most units near it gains the advantages of its effects, so place it wisely somewhere you can defend it. You also get the Troll myth unit. Some people hate them, but they actually are not bad, especially with the Hamarrtroll upgrade. For the purposes of this strategy you can probably pass on the upgrade, and just build a couple trolls for the sake of guarding things. They are a ranged myth unit, who regenerate themselves by attacking others. Also, I cannot stress this enough develop Forsetis Hall of Thanes improvement if you are at all serious about making this strategy work. Were going to create (hopefully) 30 or more Hersir in a few minutes with Ragnarok, and I think 10% more hitpoints and speed for each of them sounds like a good idea.Begin building Longhouses, and Throwing Axemen/Ulfsark. Raiding is so key to this strategy, and you are going to use groups of Axemen for the task. We need food later for Frost Giants, and Throwing Axemen take wood, which we dont need that much of otherwise. Make a first wave of four and attack his base (of course make a few defenders as well). Try and make future waves of about 4 Axemen supplemented with 1 or 2 Ulfsark. Assault him constantly with these small groups from now until Ragnarok happens essentially your opponent should be defending attack from now almost constantly until the game ends. Throw in a Troll now and again if you feel like it (youre going to build up favour with all this raiding). You must keep your opponent occupied while you gather resources if he gets ahead of you there, this strategy is going to look like crap in a hurry. Raid him constantly, hit villagers first. Without villagers your opponent cant gather resources, and without resources hes dead. If you cant hit villagers, attack his temple if you can, or attack military buildings to try and slow/prevent him from building units. Houses and towers also make smart targets. If youre down to one or two units, pull them back and put them near your Healing Spring (which you should cast somewhere defendable around now). Use this to make future raids larger and more effective.Remember, the goal of raiding is not annihilation of the opponent. Its to slow him down by hurting his economy and generally disrupting whatever his plans are. Hit villagers at every opportunity as the first priority. The buildings will fall later when your real army shows up. If you can catch villagers mining gold, thats the jackpot. Kill/drive away his villagers and claim the mine for yourself. Also, dont stop producing a stupid number of dwarves. Theyre all going to become Hersir later. In the Heroic age, you get Skadi, who is immensely useful to our plans. Hell, Skadi is immensely useful in general. Her God power is Frost. It freezes some enemy units solid, and while frozen they can neither defend or be attacked. Use it during Ragnarok to allow you to target a building instead of its defenders (for example). If you really need to, you could also use it to stop a raid on you while you build a countermeasure. The myth unit you gain is the awesome Frost Giant. Be sure to develop the Rime improvement to make them even more deadly. Also develop Skadis other improvements; Huntresss Axe to improve Throwing Axemen, and the super-important Winter Harvest to improve farming (you REALLY need that after Rgagnarok has begun to get your economy going again).Essentially, in heroic continue on as in mythic raid like hell, build lots of gatherers and dwarves, advance to the next age as quickly as you can. Make sure Forsetis Hall of Thanes is developed before you advance, along with Rime for Frost Giants, and Winter Harvest and Huntresss Axe as well. Once thats done, click the age advancement button to advance. While the age change is underway, cease production of military units aside from Frost Giants and maybe a couple Throwing Axemen (they will be only for defensive purposes, for the next while). Begin spamming dwarves and gatherers. Use all your remaining Raiding Axemen to keep the opponent busy. Dont worry if they die at this point and do not pull them back to heal. They are buying you time for the real push, which starts the moment you hit the Mythic age. Keep your opponent busy chasing a round a bunch of (by comparison) piddly Axemen, then you swoop down on him with 35 Hersir and some Frost Giants. Yeah.In Mythic age, we receive Baldr, and his Ragnarok God power. He also provides the powerful myth unit Fire Giant. As soon as you reach mythic age, you should already be spamming as many dwarves as possible as quickly as possible. When you are at your population limit (or close to it), prepare to cast Ragnarok. But be aware of one thing NEVER EVER leave yourself without enough resources to build a couple gatherers and dwarves. If you do, youre dead. In short, these are the steps in the Mythic age:1. Spam dwarves and gatherers if food supplies will allow it until close to your population limit. If you have excess favour stored up, spend it and food on Frost Giants instead of gatherers. But do not stop with Dwarves so long as you have gold.2. When your population limit is as high as you can get it and you still have enough food and gold to eventually build a couple gatherers and dwarves, cast Ragnarok. Your population will go tons over the limit, as Hersirs take 3 pop slots each. You should gain at MINIMUM 30 Hersir from this.3. Take ALL of your Hersirs, and every myth unit available, and wipe out as much of the enemy as possible. Leave any human units (Throwing Axemen, Huskarl, Ulfsark) behind to guard your base. (Alternate: If you have any trolls, leave them behind but bring the Axemen instead)Because of constant raiding you should already be aware of where his base(s) are. Eradicate them. If youve frustrated him enough with raiding up to this point, he may resign at some stage. Dont be afraid to send your groups in two main waves one attacks, one sits at the healing spring, and rotate them. Keep pressure on him constantly and never stop attacking. Remember that right now your economy is completely dead. You must attack now not only to beat him, but also to get yourself back into the game on that front, in case this fails.4. When your population limit has fallen below maximum in the fighting, begin building some gatherers and dwarves. Assign the gatherers to your farms and trees, and as soon as your first dwarf is back in play cast the Dwarven Mine God power to help boost the speed at which you can begin producing gold again (the Dwarven Mine mines faster than a regular one).5. You should have a silly amount of favour to spend due to all the fighting. Focus your gatherers mostly on farming but also dont forget about putting some on wood, and try and make Frost Giantsas far as burning favour goes. The first priority is to get at least 15 gatherers and dwarves back into things. Also use available wood to make Throwing Axemen and Huskarls (as a guard against a retaliatory strike). Begin rebuilding your economy, and as Hersir and Frost Giants die, replace them with gatherers, dwarves, Throwing Axemen, Huskarls, and Giants as favour permits.6. Continue attacking in waves, building more units, and using the healing spring, with as much of your force as you can. Keep it up until the enemy resigns or until hes dead. From here to the end, it should be nothing but attack. Find targets, and destroy them while leaving only smaller forces left behind at your base, repeat until the game is over.7. If a retaliatory force approaches your main base and you can see youre understaffed, use the Frost God power to delay it. Try and get some Throwing Axemen or Huskarls if you can afford them into play in time to help with whatever resources are available. If you dont have wood but you have food, build Ulfsark. Do what you have to do to keep your base steady. You should certainly have a larger force attacking him than he has attacking you, and eventually he should have to fall back to defend, or hell be dead.

You dont get hersir from ragnarok, you get ragnorok heroes which dont get affected by hersir upgrades (im almost sure). I know you said 30 MINIMUM but thats not good, if you dont have more than 70 dont even cast it since your eco is early classical age like.Seems like you put a lot of time into this, so gj especially for a first guide and you say your new to the game to. Just correct a couple errors which arnt major but would mislead a new player. Bionic J

Mortal posted 04 May 2005 10:22 PM EDT (US) 2 / 28 Well, it looks like I'm a bit confused on a couple points there, lol. Some stuff to definitely work out.I am definitely new. New as in "my friend owns the game and I've played it less than a dozen times, and I'm probably buying my own copy in the near future". Years of other similar titles let me pick up a lot quickly though, and I wrote this out for myself more so than to be a "guide" for people. Becasue frankly I am way too new at this game to justify me writing any kind of guide. I just like the format, and wanted advice. I'm not really loking to advise anyone myself. Black Eye
