I'm an Accountant and I've downloaded the software and have been experimenting with Ledger.
I don't see a reference # field for check # s etc. Why not?

It's because our software design philosophy is to keep things simple.
A reference number field is unnecessary.
Reference numbers can be entered in the Description field as part of the description.
