Ok, I am going to try to recall exactly. what happened in the hopes someone will be able to tell me how to fix this mess.

First, my laptop, with XP where I normally ran the Legacy software began having serious issues.  When I realized I was going to have to replace or repair my laptop, I backed the Responsive Software folder onto my external hard drive.  I tested the software a few more times before I actually retired my laptop and it worked fine.

I purchased a new laptop with Windows 7 (which I am still leaning towards somehow going back to XP!) and when I tried to run the software from the external hard drive, which was still on my network, it said the database was inaccessible.  When I attempted to run it from the desktop (with Vista) where the external hard drive was connected to directly, it said the database was inaccessible.  When I connected the external hard drive directly to my laptop it said the database was inaccessible.

Finally, after multiple attempts and after ensuring the folder was a shared folder, etc, I finally downloaded the software and re-installed it.  At that point, the software began running properly, but I could not find my data, although oddly enough when I go into companies it does show my company which just further confuses me!!!  Can anyone offer any advice?  Is there a restore option to import my old database file?

To transfer a Ledger database from one computer to another you need to know the folder where the Ledger database is stored on each of the computers.  (This may vary depending on the version of Windows you are using.  Please see http://www.responsive.co.nz/faq.html#datalocation)

Once you know this information you can simply copy the entire Ledger database folder from the old computer to the new computer replacing the folder on the new computer.  (Make sure Ledger is not running when you do this.)

The error message that says the database is inaccessible can be caused by a number of things.  Please see http://www.responsive.co.nz/faq.html#databaseinaccessible

Hi there,

I have a similar problem. The folder which contains the backed up data according to the FAQ is C:\Program Files (x86)\Responsive Software\Ledger\Database

However, when I navigate to that folder, it is empty! Having invested a lot of time and effort populating my ledger, I do not want to lose the data.

Please help.

Thanks,

Duncan

Are you running Windows 7? I noticed the same thing. The files in there are hidden. I needed to run explorer.exe as administrator to be able to view those files.
