Dear Friends,

Careful stewardship asks us to think about our own time—what how can we meaningfully spend our time to ensure a brighter tomorrow?

The decisions being made in our communities today will shape Southeastern Massachusetts for decades to come. Here are this week's opportunities to help ensure that forests, wetlands, clean water, wildlife habitat, and the places we value are protected for the future.

Organizing Call: Don't Kill Fearing Hill!

  • Wednesday, September 2, 9:30 - 10:30 am
  • On Zoom (link below)
  • Why it matters: Fearing Hill is an iconic natural land feature in Wareham. Featuring one of the tallest hills in Wareham, it consists of untouched, continuous expanses of forest, home to native species, and forms a local wildlife corridor with surrounding landscapes. Ancient ways trod by Indigenous people cross the hillside. Read more about the natural features and conservation values at Fearing Hill in our blog.  Watch the latest drone footage of this beautiful hill here. A solar developer has been fighting hard to place 20 acres of industrial solar on the hill - on steep slopes, upgradient of private wells, and in a manner that cuts down 20 acres of forest, disrupts natural stormwater patterns, and threatens the stability of the hillside.
  • How you can help: Can you join a dedicated group of volunteers willing to take "the last stand" on Fearing Hill? We're looking for volunteers who can commit to joining our call, reviewing site plans and court documents, attending meetings, and forming a coalition to save this parcel. Please sign up using this link!

Grassroots Action Hour!

  • Wednesday, September 2, 6 pm - Sign up using this link!
  • Carver Library and on Zoom
  • Why it matters: Grassroots action needs just that - action. We'll set aside a dedicated hour once a month to work together, and strategize on local issues.
  • How you can help: Bring the topic you want to work on. We have greater impact when we work together to support each other. Come to the Carver library to help design a campaign to make a difference in your town or neighborhood. Sit down with us to write a letter, call your rep, prepare for an upcoming meeting, or help us design the next phase of action on sand mining, solar, and reckless development.

Plymouth Airport Commission

  • Thursday, September 3, 7 pm
  • Plymouth Municipal Airport Conference Room, 246 South Meadow Road, Plymouth
  • Why it matters: The Plymouth Airport seeks to expand one of its runways, which could lead to expanded airport traffic. Private jets are a major source of carbon dioxide, and private jet traffic contributes to climate change. Private jets create noise and air pollution and degrade our quality of life, yet benefit only a very few.
  • How you can help: Attend the airport commission meetings and voice your concerns about runway expansion. Learn more at TakeBackOurPlymouthAirport and Stop Private Jet Expansion - a luxury our planet cannot afford!

Carver Earth Removal Committee

  • Tuesday, September 8, 3 pm. Let us know you can go using this link!!
  • Carver Town Hall
  • Why it matters: The Carver Earth Removal Committee is responsible for handing out permits worth millions of dollars to extract sand and gravel from our aquifer. These permits cause air pollution, noise pollution, cut down thousands of acres of trees, and threaten our water quality.
  • How you can help: Attend the next Carver Earth Removal Committee and tell them no new permits until a comprehensive study on the impacts to our drinking water is complete!

Wareham Planning Board

  • Monday, September 14, 6 pm. Let us you you can go using this link!
  • Wareham Multi-Service Center and on Zoom
  • Why it matters:  This will be the last public hearing on the solar-gone-wrong Fearing Hill solar project. This project proposes cutting down 20 acres of trees on a hilltop for solar - all adjacent to conservation land. The community has been fighting this project for years - this will be the last chance to make an impact.
  • How you can help: Download the latest version of the project plans from the Planning Board website the week before and attend the meeting and describe any discrepancies you see between what they propose and what they promised. Read our blogs on the project here, here and here. Join our organizing call on Tuesday, September 2, at 9:30 am (see above).
