Thisis a nice crochet granny stripes hat. This free pattern is for adult women. I decided to try this pattern from a different perspective using one of the latest yarns by Yarnspirations. This yarn is Bernat Super Value but there is a new version as of 2015. It's called Bernat Super Value Stripes.
The very convenient thing about this yarn is that the colours stay the same colour for a long stretch before instantly transitioning to the next colour. There are 8 different colourways to choose from in this new yarn brand. See the examples below. The blue version is Bernat Super Value Stripes Meadow and the brightly coloured version is Bernat Super Value Stripes Spice.
In the picture above, you will notice the blue version is slightly bigger. It's not a zoomed picture, it is bigger. The blue version is the original pattern. I'm a loose crocheter, so it was too big for my head.
In the video tutorial, I also talk about this as being one of my issues. So I show how you can change the pattern to make it smaller. So if you are loose like me, if you don't follow the instruction in Round 6 and just skip over it, you will end up with a smaller hat. Round 6 is a growth round of making it the final size. However, it takes several more revolutions after this round before the hat starts to show it's true size.
Word of Caution - I noticed when making the brightly coloured version that I thought I might have been wrong to eliminate Round 6. However, once I got to the brim area, I noticed it was fitting perfectly. I was having self doubt during the making of it whenever it was going to be too small. I wasn't giving the yarn a chance to relax and get to it's full size.
If you are unsure if you are a loose crocheter and do Round 6. Mark that round with a stitch marker. You will realize about half way to the brim that it will be too big for you. You can pull out your stitches back to Round 6 and eliminate round 6 completely and then continue as normal.
You have to follow the gauge on the pattern to match it. So you may need to put two strands together. Just do a gauge check and see what you come up with. If it's similar then yes. You may need to change your hook size to get the right gauge as well.
It's been about 2 months since the Granny Patch quilt pattern release and I still have ONE last quilt that I have yet to show you! This was actually a last minute quilt before the pattern release. And I'm so glad we made it happen! I reached out to Sandy of Thai Charm to help me sew this sample together and I just love how it turned out!
In case you missed it, each of my Granny Patch samples were inspired by a certain decade. The cover quilt reminds me of 1960s Pyrex. Then I have a 1970s velvet-inspired quilt. Followed by a super rad 1980s Granny Patch. Then this is my 1990s version. Why 1990s? Good question! Something about it reminds me of my childhood (which was in the 90s). Maybe it's Justin and Britney's iconic matching denim outfits, mixed with my love of all things Barbie and Polly Pocket (remember Polly Pocket??). I really can't put my finger on it, but this has always been a 90s color palette for me. 8 year old Brittany would approve!
The fabrics for the front of this quilt top are Robert Kaufman Kona Solids. The background is Kona Chalkboard...which I would argue is a really cool grey. It's borderline blue and with the addition of the blues and purples in the foreground, it REALLY reads "cooler" than it would if it was by itself. That's the super interesting thing about the Granny Patch Quilt pattern. Since so much of the pattern alternates between the Background and the Foreground fabrics, there is a tight relationship between how these two groups of fabric interact. They all play off each other in a BIG way. Go through and look at the other Granny Patch blog posts to see what I mean!
Again, Sandy of Thai Charm made this quilt happen for me! She pieced the quilt top AND long-arm quilted it and I just can't tell you how thankful I am for her help! She did a beautiful job too, don't you think?
The pantograph is called Crystal Ball by Karlee Porter and I love the "lava lamp" sort of movement that it adds to the quilt. We used a medium gray thread so that it would blend in with the background and not stand out too much on the lighter colors of this quilt.
The backing is called Compass Points and it's from Sharon Holland's "Shine On" collection for Art Gallery Fabrics. I really think this fabric could work for any quilt backing! It ranks pretty high up on the list of my favorite backings. We have 4.5 yards cuts of this fabric in our shop!
This is such a fun advanced beginner quilt pattern that is fat quarter and 1/4 yard friendly. You'll love mixing and matching these fabrics and creating your very own crochet-inspired quilt. Not to mention there is a video tutorial included in the pattern to share about my process for staying organized and efficient.
For my first version of this granny hexagon cardigan I used a weight 4 yarn, but for THIS version I used a weight 3! And soon I plan on making a real chunky one (so stay tuned for that).
*After you have worked as many rounds as you think you might need, TRY ON your cardigan by folding your hexagon in half and then using stitch markers (or scrap yarn) to connect the top half of your cardigan together so you can put it on.
*example shown in photos below
If the size is a good length for you, then you can go ahead and Fasten off, and then seam the top portion of your cardigan together. I use single crochet to seam, but you can use whatever seaming method you want. You can check out my video on how I seamed it together here on how I did it (use the timestamps on the video will help navigate where in the video you can find this part).
This part of the pattern is completely optional. If your cardigan is a perfect length and width for you overall (like if your covers and fits across you chest and back as you want it to) you can skip this step. BUT for those who have wider chests/busts/OR just went for a super cropped cardi and need it to cover more surface area in the front and back, this is for YOU!
Repeat Rows 1 & 2 until you have as many rows as you want for the width of your cardigan. You can continually try it on after each row to get a feel for how many you want.
I did a total of 3 rows for my cardigan.
This scallop detailing is optional if it is not your vibe. BUT if do you like it, please refer to my tutorial for this pattern, as I feel like I explain it much better there than I can write it here. The timestamps in the video will make it super easy and convenient to find!

See the full, free crochet hoodie pattern below, or you may choose to purchase the ad-free, printable version from my Etsy shop HERE (available in 8 sizes), or the kit from Lion Brand HERE.
This hoodie is made by crocheting three rectangular panels and seaming them at the sides and shoulders to make the body. Two additional rectangular panels are crocheted for the sleeves which are folded and seamed to finish. The sleeves are sewn onto the hoodie during assembly. The collar is added after the panels have been seamed and assembled. The hood is crocheted directly onto the sweater (see directions and schematic). *You will use the granny stitch in this pattern. See a tutorial here: -to crochet-the-granny-stitch/ Feel free to practice on a small swatch before beginning!
You may choose to make the hoodie longer or shorter by simply crocheting for more or fewer rows on the front and back panels. Keep yarn needs in mind when adjusting the size! Note that the fabric is very comfy and stretchy, so it will stretch when worn. Crochet the pattern as written for both the cardigan style option and sweatshirt style option. The sweatshirt option simply includes seaming the front panels together at the end.
