Hellohas anyone else had issues with their iMac that came with the 1TB Seagate, but their serial number is not covered under the recall program? My iMac, which is 1 and a half months outside the warranty period has a failing Seagate drive, but my local Apple store insists there there are not any problems with the 1TB Seagate drives that shipped in my iMac model (27 inch 2.8 GHz i7), which I find hard to believe. Has anyone heard of Apple expanding their coverage of the 1TB Seagate recall?

mine juat failed today, no warning. st31000528asq. Serial # of imac on apple.com says it is not covered under the faulty 1tb seagate recall, although mine was a refurb so not sure if the hd was replaced with original spec or the 1 under recall.

I actually bought this machine at Best Buy and bought the protection plan. I called the support number and they said to bring it in and that they would probably have to send it out to a service center. I asked how long that would take, and the lady said 4-6 weeks! I think I'd rather buy another harddrive for $100 and replace it myself.

If that machine's covered under the AppleCare protection plan, the HD's covered. Mine just went south Friday. Visited Apple's Express Lane, described the issue, and since I'm within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, I was eligible for onsite repair. They shipped the part to their service provider, it arrived Monday morning, and it was replaced that afternoon.

Knowing how the machine is put together and what tools are needed, I wouldn't do my own replacement, especially since the OEM HD has proprietary heat sensors built in and you can't just buy one off the street. I've built audio and TV equipment, but wouldn't attempt this, especially w/o having all of their tools, including display cleaners and lint removers.

I wish it was the AppleCare program, I have the BestBuy geek squad black tie program. I was very unimpressed with the estimate of 4-6 week turnaround. This is the only computer we have at home, not sure we can go without for that long, especially near the end of my kids school year.

I have a full backup on my time capsule and the Geek squad plan is good till the end of July, so I'll probably ride it out till the end of the school year. Bummer, it just seems like there's more than just a few of these HD's going out that Apple would cover more of them.

Just got through replacing mine in a late 2009 27". Did it myself with the help of iFixit iMac but felt it was premature for a home computer that is just used mostly for email. My biggest problem was FINDING one.Seagate sent me a list of 47 authorized sellers and after going through 10-15 of them and not being able to even find the model number

(ST31000528AS) listed I again contacted Seagate who then gave me the name of a company who handled obsolete and hard to find parts. They also did not have one but did have a partner company that might and upon calling was to ask for "Bob" (a big box company no doubt). "Bob" answered the phone and said he had one so I ordered, he shipped, I got on time, ports were the same so figured I wouldn't have to worry about fan speed running on high all the time, and I am up and running (along with the fans which are running on high all the time)

Too bad. Nobody beats Apple's extended warranty. Good luck trying it on your own. Now, if you had a bootable ext HD with full backups/clones, you could continue to use the machine while the Geeks get their act together or are ready to fix yours. It shouldn't have to sit in their shop 4-6 weeks waiting for someone to spend 45 minutes replacing.

Note that you have to replace this drive with another Seagate because of the thermal sensor. I'm still trying to figure out which other Seagate models are compatible. So far I'm assuming most of them, but I haven't confirmed this yet.

Yes also, I have a late 2009 model 27" and noticed last week that my Seagate 1TB ST31000528ASQ hard drive status is failing. Here are the steps I have taken to this point. First I started looking at the support discussions and took notice of all the problems with this hard drive....... Second I did not purchase the Apple Care Plan because I thought I was purchasing a product that would not have problems such as this, what a mistake.. So I called two Apple Authorized service providers here in Florida first one told me I would need to bring my machine in and they would look at it and charge me $50.00 to give me a price for installation of a new hard drive, second one I called told me that they were now being recertified by apple and couldn't work on any products until certification complete but he did tell me should cost about $200.00. So then went to the local apple store to visit a genius because they won't give you a price on the phone.... their cost $266.14. I asked for the breakdown and was advised 40.00 labor and 226.14 for the hard drive. I said are you kidding you can get a 3TB for that cost? So end result.... Have ordered a Seagate Barracuda 1TB hard drive for $110.00 and will get a fan utility to make sure the fan operates like it should. Everyone is asking the same question over and over again.......Why isn't Apple covering all these bad hard drives. I have only had my Imac since 12/2010. This is a prime example of being exploited as far as I am concerned. Propriety firmware to operate the fan so causes bunch of other junk to deal with and the purchase of a new hard drive after 20 mos? I have a sour taste in my mouth from the apple right now.......... Will be installing the hard drive ourselves with the help of ifixit. Kinda sounds funny ! Guess I'm just ranting, however the apple genius guy said we can't cover everyones hard drive "they can go out anytime" So why are all these people posting the same exact model of Seagate?

I hear ya! I just ended up getting another Seagate 1.5T drive (I Hate Seagate Drives, This is the 3rd one I've had die in other devices) and following the instructions on Utube. Everything went well, had to reformat the drive from the startup drive utility, then reload from timemachine which took several hours. I'm up and running fine, except the fan is running at high speed. I am looking at a utility, but don't want to pay another $29.99 after all I had to do to get this far. I guess I'l give in eventually and get it.

The problem is the fans will run at full speed without the thermal sensor. There are a number of threads on the net about a jumper and using the same sensor as the optical drive uses to work around this annoying problem.

Guys I bought my Imac on september 2011 and I know it has the same faulty seagate drive ST31000528AS yet apples site says its not included in the recall...this is ridiculous as its the same seagate drive and my Imac must have been made before july 2011.

I can hear this drive spinning something that I could not hear on my previous imac or my other imac that has a 500GB drive. I thought npthing of it but now im investiganting this drives history Im worried! How is it that apple has such a drastic cut off date when Imacs sold after mid 2011 were made before that date and use the same drive?
