getting preview for .doc, not .docx or .rtf

I have installed Resourcespace from svn on Ubuntu server 10.10. I have
a clean installation check.

The problem is that when I upload .docx, .xlsx, or .rtf files I get no
preview image. I do get a preview image for .doc files.

I tried the unoconv solution but it makes no difference. I believe it
is being called correctly, but it doesn't seem to do anything. If I
leave top running on the ubuntu console and do a "retry preview
creation" I see an openoffice process pop up (often says defunct by
it) but no preview is generated.

Also, I have the box checked in Office 2011 Mac that says to "save a
preview in file" but that isn't being read either. Is this feature
currently broken?

I don't know that we've tested with Office '11 files. Can you please
send over/post a sample file? I would love an example of
each: .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx from the new version.

Thanks!

did you try starting unoconv with

unoconv --listener &

and have you tested an unoconv conversion on the command line? It sounds like your unoconv setup isn't working.

/usr/bin/unoconv --format=pdf test.docx

Jeff,
For us, docx and pptx work fine but if you have a poorly designed template the PPTx page elements will not always come out as clean o correct as they should. PPT gives us the best results after  testing on dozens of office files. As a rule Test your PPT template  to see how ell it prints to PDF. That outcome will be very similar to what you get with the RS solution.

Tom,
correct me if I am wrong but can't you also add your own fonts to the solution say if your org has unique typefaces in its ID?

Hi Matt,

If custom fonts are needed, they have to be installed on the server system in such a way that OpenOffice can use them. On Ubuntu:

sudo cp myfont.ttf /usr/share/fonts/truetype

I've tested this here and attached a proof that this should work.

I wanted to make sure my changes while experimenting weren't to blame,
so I did a fresh reinstall this morning. This time I used Ubuntu 10.04
(not 10.10 if that makes any difference, which it probably doesn't). I
did a svn install of ResourceSpace and installed unoconv.

All files were uploaded with preview image disabled in the "save"
output of Microsoft Office 2011 Mac. I tested
using .doc, .docx, .pptx., .xls, .xlsx and .rtf. I used the sample
templates that come with Microsoft Office 2011 Mac to generate content
for my test files.

After manually executing " /usr/bin/unoconv -l & " (the --listener
option gives an error) I was able to reliably create previews for
everything except .xlsx files. I sometimes see a preview with .xlsx
files but sometimes I don't.

For now things certainly look good enough to go forward with. I will
have unoconv -l start with each boot. We rarely use .xlsx files, and
when we need them I will recommend using .xls instead which seem to be
more reliably converted at the moment. The most important files for us
will be the .docx files which are in very heavy use here.

Thanks for the information.

I feel kinda foolish. I went into config.default.php and added .xlsx
to the list of extensions that unoconv will use. As expected, it is
working reliably on the .xlsx files at the moment. I hastily scanned
the list earlier and thought I saw it but it wasn't present there.

Thanks again.

I did the same thing (adding xlsx to the unoconv_extensions) and I didn't get xlsx support to work.

The http://dag.wieers.com/home-made/unoconv/ doesn't mention xlsx. I would think anything that openoffice supports, unoconv should support.

You confirm that you can make xlsx work?  Do your previews have a scr size (do they get bigger when you click the image on the view page)? If not, it may be an extraction from the xml file (which is fine, but not the best).

what error does the --listener option give you?
