List view as default for search results

I have added $default_display="list"; to our config.php file, but search results still default to the thumbnail view. Am I missing something? Other config overrides seem to be working.

It's overridden in the user preferences. The config value just sets the default for what shows in your preferences, but once you've changed it in preferences, it's there that will take precedence.

To clarify, I would like list view to be the default for anonymous user searches. I do not see a method for setting this.

Update: this appears to be solved with the default display option under System > Configuration > Search in the Admin GUI.
