no thumbnails

Hi there,

I could really use some help with this.
I have two separate instances of Resource Space on an external host
(Lunarpages).
Both installations have recently stopped generating thumbnails on new
uploads of jpg images.
To make it more frustrating, every now and then, it will work, but for
the majority of uploads, it's not working.

The file uploads, but no thumbnail gets generated. If I try to edit a
photo and ask it to "retry preview creation", it still does not work.
I just get the default place holder image.

The installation check says...

PHP version 5.2.17 OK
MySQL version 5.1.56 (client-encoding: latin1) OK
GD version bundled (2.0.34 compatible) OK
PHP.INI value for 'memory_limit' 128M WARNING: should be 200M or
greater
PHP.INI value for 'post_max_size' 110M OK
PHP.INI value for 'upload_max_filesize' 100M OK
Write access to /public_html/images/include/../filestore OK
Blocked browsing of 'filestore' directory FAIL: filestore folder
appears to be browseable; remove 'Indexes' from Apache 'Options' list.
ImageMagick Version: ImageMagick 6.5.0-10 2009-03-31 Q16 OpenMP
http://www.imagemagick.org OK
FFmpeg Not installed
Ghostscript Not installed
EXIF extension OK
Exiftool Not installed
Last scheduled task execution (days) 0 OK

As I understand it, everything looks right. The warnings shouldn't be
hurting it's ability to make thumbnails.

Can anyone suggest how I can go about solving this?

Thanks.

I would be suspicious of the low memory limit warning -- working
sometimes and not others probably has to do with the fact that it is
able to successfully process small files, but runs out of memory on
large ones. I seem to recall that I once did an install that had a
very similar problem, and it went away when I allowed provided more
memory for it to work with.

Can you increase the memory limit on the server?

Nice one.

I just found the error logs and saw "Cannot allocate memory: couldn't
spawn child process" in relation to the installation.

I have logged a request with the host to see if I can get the memory
limit changed.

I'll let you know how I go.

Thanks.

So I have fixed the memory problem but this has not fixed the
thumbnail problem.

installation check now says...

PHP version 5.2.17 OK
MySQL version 5.1.56 (client-encoding: latin1) OK
GD version bundled (2.0.34 compatible) OK
PHP.INI value for 'memory_limit' 200M OK
PHP.INI value for 'post_max_size' 100M OK
PHP.INI value for 'upload_max_filesize' 100M OK
Write access to /public_html/images/include/../filestore OK
Blocked browsing of 'filestore' directory FAIL: filestore folder
appears to be browseable; remove 'Indexes' from Apache 'Options' list.
ImageMagick Version: ImageMagick 6.5.0-10 2009-03-31 Q16 OpenMP
http://www.imagemagick.org OK
FFmpeg Not installed
Ghostscript Not installed
EXIF extension OK
Exiftool Not installed
Last scheduled task execution (days) 0 OK

But I just tried uploading 4 jpg images (each under 10Meg). The upload
process went very smooth but still no thumbnails.

Any more suggestions?

Thanks.

If you look in the error log during upload, are you seeing any errors?

Not sure what to make of this but...

The error log went crazy when I started uploading some more files, and
then the upload stopped, with Java reporting the following error...

"Upload stopped with errors
Received HTTP status 500 Internal Server Error"

But the strange thing is that none of the errors in the log file
relate to Resource Space. This is what the error log looked like while
uploading...

[Thu Jul 14 19:16:25 2011] [error] (12)Cannot allocate memory:
couldn't spawn child process for: /home/user/public_html/ssp/
ssp_director/p.php
[Thu Jul 14 19:16:24 2011] [error] File does not exist: /home/user/
public_html/ssp/500.shtml
[Thu Jul 14 19:16:24 2011] [error] (12)Cannot allocate memory:
couldn't spawn child process for: /home/user/public_html/ssp/
ssp_director/p.php
[Thu Jul 14 19:16:24 2011] [error] File does not exist: /home/user/
public_html/ssp/500.shtml
[Thu Jul 14 19:16:24 2011] [error] (12)Cannot allocate memory:
couldn't spawn child process for: /home/user/public_html/ssp/
ssp_director/p.php
[Thu Jul 14 19:16:23 2011] [error] File does not exist: /home/user/
public_html/ssp/500.shtm

Resource space is installed on /home/user/public_html/image

I can't see how these are related, but the timing is coincidental.

Oh, I did find this single RS entry in the error log from when the
upload crashed...

[Thu Jul 14 19:16:38 2011] [error] Premature end of script headers: /
home/user/public_html/images/pages/upload_java.php

Any suggestions?

PS, I upgraded to the latest version of RS as of yesterday, but the
problems were happening prior to that. I thought the upgrade might fix
it but it didn't :(

Premature end of script headers probably means that whatever happened
crashed the upload process before it had a chance to do produce any
output for the browser.

Can you try to use the Team Center>Manage Resources>Add Single
Resource option to upload a resource without using the java uploader,
and see if you have the same problem? (keep an eye on the error log
again, and also see if there are any errors displayed in the browser.)
