Hi, I'm part of a group looking for a digital asset management tool
for our game development projects, and I'm looking at ResourceSpace.
However it seems ResourceSpace is specifically tailored for graphic
design, web design and others related to that area.

Can't admins create new resource types without needing to edit the
source code? We can use some resource types that ResourceSpace allows,
but our other assets are 3d models, textures, and fonts, to name a
few. Properties like Country, Named Persons, and Camera Model are
useless for textures, even though they are also images. Meanwhile, 3d
models need to display properties like polygon count, and they are
dependent on other assets since 3d models need textures (downloading a
3d model should also download their textures). Also, I am looking at
using http://finnrudolph.de/JavaScriptObject/Introduction for previews
of 3d models.

I don't think a plugin will suffice in order to add these
functionalities in ResourceSpace. Since its open source, I hope its ok
with you guys if I create a fork of ResourceSpace that is meant for
game development projects?

Also, some unrelated questions:

The wiki said thumbnails can be created automatically for .blend
files. What is the application required for this? Or are you simply
extracting an embedded thumbnail from the .blend file?

If a user mistakenly tries to upload a photo that is already similar
to one that already exists in the system, can ResourceSpace report
this to the user?

Are past versions of an asset still retained in the system in case we
need to access them?

Can I change what pictures are being slideshowed on the home page?

Can't users add comments to a resource (similar to an "Add Comment" to
news articles in websites)?

After a resource gets approved, why can't the user (a general user)
who owns that resource edit the resource metadata?

Can't users change the email address they specified?

I'm surprised that properties like File Size and Original Filename
have to be inputted manually. Can't they be generated automatically?

How can a general user add to a public collection? As the collection
owner, I already edited the collection to "Allow other users to add/
remove resources" to true (the checkbox is already checked and I
clicked on Save). But when I add a new asset as a different user,
that collection does not show up in the possible choices.

My jpg files don't have thumbnails automatically, I have to go edit
the resource then retry preview creation. Is this a bug?

When I try to edit the welcometext (from Team Center > Manage
Content), it gives me this error:

(database) line N/A: Incorrect integer value: '' for column
'custom' at row 1

insert into
site_text(page,name,language,specific_to_group,text,custom) values
('home','welcometext','en-US','2','Your introductory text here. Your
introductory text here. Your introductory text here.','')

I am using the stable version ResourceSpace_3_9_2269.

Hi,

Maybe you'd be interested in writing an FAQ about ResourceSpace, since
the dozen questions that you've asked have mostly been answered
numerous times on this group. Here is a little feedback on some of
your questions.

1. Resource Types and Fields are fully configurable through Team
Center->System Setup, and this kind of thing doesn't require editing
source code.
2. blender files are previewed using Blender itself on the server (and
it just renders the first frame). I just added a blender path to
config.default.php in revision 2323 (it was hardcoded before)
3. search the group about the checksum feature for finding duplicate files.
4. There is no version control in RS yet.
5. There is a new feature in the transform plugin for changing the
home page animations (see recent posts and SVN checkout). You have to
open permissions to your $homeanim_folder to do this. Otherwise, you
have to change the images at gfx/homeanim/gfx
6. There is no user-commenting feature yet in RS.
7. General users can't currently edit active resource metadata.
8. Users currently have to ask admins to change their email address.
9. File Size and Original Filename are automatically generated.

the notion of forking the project in order to support specific file
type previewing and metadata is short-sighted for ALL parties. first,
that means any effort made in either fork will quickly become
unavailable to the other. you will never be able to update from the
main project again, or vice versa. secondly, resourcespace's explicit
raison d'etre is to support as broad a range of file types as
possible, including 3D work. this is someting the community wants to
see developed in the base. third, though you are correct that efforts
of this kind are not best suited to plug-in work, that doesn't mean it
justifies a fork. it would best be done by contributing to the base
code.

my company colorhythm has made major contributions in a number of
areas for file type support, such as metadata for Office docs, fonts,
SWF, etc. may i make some suggestions from experience? fund or
develop previewing support and contribute it to the base. contact
phil harvey at exiftool and ask him for support of metadata for 3D
formats. do as much research and contribute as much as possible to
keep costs down. that way you can continually benefit from other
developments in the project, and the project benefits from expanded
file type support. one way or another, resourcespace will gain more
support for 3D formats, whether it's your doing or not. and then you
can also benefit from continued developments as well. forking is only
best done when the primary project is poorly managed or there's a
major disagreement between leaders. that's not the case here.

you may not be using the term "forking" in its usual sense, either...
it usually means making another version of software and developing it
publicly so there are multiple versions that are developed
independently. ImageMagick vs. GraphicsMagick is an example. perhaps
you just meant making a private version? either way, my comments
stand as good advice borne of experience.

best,
jeff

javascriptobject is very cool! the license is a little restrictive,
but perhaps would be tolerated within the context of resourcespace?

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/

comments?

the .blend format is poorly documented. but my research has shown that
it doesn't contain metadata, AFAIK. this is a special case for
ExifTool. Phil doesn't much like to support formats simply to
recognize their existence and basic file properties, as that can be
done elsewise. is that even a word? anyway, that's where my research
has landed.

also worth noting for the few Mac heads out there is that the path to
the CLI for blender would be:

/replacewithyourpathtoapp/blender.app/Contents/MacOS/blender

after you download the app.

@Tom: Thanks for the answers, I'll try to contribute a FAQ when I get
the time. I am swamped with *so much* work right now.

@Jeff: I agree that javascriptobject is cool. Perhaps we can use that
instead of having the "automatically create thumbnail for each 3d
model" support. If you can talk to the author of javascriptobject and
come to some agreement on the license that would be nice.
