Curious if VR & 360 video playback is being explored, or if there is a solution to viewing within RS that anyone knows about.  My dept. is planning to start producing this type of content in near future, would be great if RS will support.

The current default video player does have a plugin to support VR/360 playback, so it could be possible to support. I'm not sure that there's been much of the way of requesting this functionality, however.

Thanks Allison.  Good to know.  We aren't really there yet in terms of needing the plug-in, but it may be on the horizon for us.

This kind of content is exploding in popularity and is becoming more and more present on social media, especially as Facebook's viewer is such an excellent implementation. I expect this to become standard fare shortly.

Best,
Jeff

This is something I'm personally interested in implementing as I'm interested in VR and 360 degree images. I have history with the technology too as back in 1998/99 there was a surge in interest for these images with technology such as Quicktime VR becoming popular. I wrote a custom Java applet viewer for the company I worked for at the time that specialised in 360 degree images.

Back then, plugins were essential or you had to have Java support. Browser plugins fell out of favour and Microsoft pretty much killed Java applets, so I think that was the death of the technology.

It's making a comeback however probably because thanks to WebGL and fast JS engines (and much faster devices), plugins are no longer required, and also VR is surging again and this is (sort of) a related technology in that you can view these images with VR headsets. It remains to be seen if all this is just another short lived fad as it was back then - I certainly hope not.

This viewer looks potentially interesting - it's small, fast and light.

As Allison says it looks like there are plugins for VideoJS also but I couldn't see anything too well developed or maintained - Allison do you have some more information on 360 degree video support in VideoJS?

Margaret - I'm interested to know if VR headset support is a requirement for you at the moment?

Thanks,

Dan
