Unable to get 'Add resource batch - fetch from FTP server' to work

Running resourcespace on Ubuntu 20.04 and have tried various methods to get RS to upload files from local folders on the server. I have symlinked the target folder into a folder called 'upload' inside resourcespace and I can see the folder tree and pick a file but after trying to import, the program says the import is 'failed' with absolutely NO log information available to troubleshoot the error. How do I get this function to work? Why is there no log info available?? The apache error log has no errors available. Help!  This software LOOKS good, but with no help or proper documentation, it is very hard to use successfully.
