Does anyone else think that the "Download collection as a zip file"
could use a progress bar? It can take quite a while to generate
the .zip file and I have had users find it really confusing that there
is no notification that the file generation is in progress. Has
anyone written or looked at writing a progress bar or notification of
some sort for this purpose?

There is a 'Loader' plugin but I don't know think it will work in this
scenario since it is more of a client side function.

we can provide the graphic if someone can program the updating of it,
unless you just want an illusory progress bar that just swirls and
hypnotizes, which is fun, too.

I'm not sure it's possible to do a true progress bar as the zip
command doesn't feed back its progress. But a looped animation would
work.

I think a looped animation would be fine. There just needs to be
something that shows users that there is something happening in the
background.

From the zip manpage:
-v Verbose mode or print diagnostic version info.

Normally, when applied to real operations, this option
enables the display of a progress indicator during
compression and requests verbose diagnostic info about
          zipfile structure oddities.[...]

I don't have time right now to play with this, but just thought I'd throw it out there in case anyone else is
interested in tackling it.

I spotted that option in the command line help but didn't read the man
page. I wouldn't have expected verbose mode to do that. Potentially
useful.

Bear in mind that this would have to work with the Windows zip
utilities too, or at least not break horribly.
