ResourceSpace OS Installation Options

I am hoping I can get some usage information from the group regarding
preferred platforms upon which ResourceSpace can be installed with the
least amount of muss and fuss.

I originally installed this into Mac OS X (BSD Unix Core), and little
difficulties getting things like ImageMagick, GhostScript, and Ffmpeg
to install and operate correctly. Everything worked great.

However, I am now working with my IT department to get a developmental
instance installed for out Enterprise. The only hardware they had
available for this is a SPARC Solaris box, and there are huge snags
currently in terms of making these "helper" libraries work correctly.

So, other than Mac OS X, what is my next best option? Linux? If so,
what flavor? I have heard things about RS and Ubuntu. Is there
something magical about Ubuntu that I should know, or is something
like Suse Linux also do-able?

Any empirical or anecdotal advise is appreciated!

I use PCLinuxOS because of it's ease of use... very simple to get a good LAMP setup installed through its package manager, Synaptic. The live CD will let you try it out and see how it  works for you very quickly. I think the ImageMagick version may not be quite up to date, I think it's 6.2.9.2 but I'm not sure what difference this makes.
There are some nice editors for PHP on Linux too-- Quanta and Bluefish are available and color the code nicely. Aptana is also an option.
Ubuntu, for me, is not so intuitive but a lot of smart people seem happy with it; it would certainly do the job.

I use a very basic Ubuntu installation for production systems, with
just the packages I need (no GUI for example).

Any decent and up to date Linux should be fine though - the important
thing being a decent package management system with up to date
packages for php, mysql, imagemagick, ghostscript etc. so you don't
have to compile anything from source.

For development I use Mac OS X, and this works so well it could be
used for production too but it wouldn't be as optimised as Ubuntu
because there's no way to disable all the GUI stuff in OS X (at least
I don't think there is). Still, with no-one logged in this should be
pretty minimal.
