The SDK is built on the System.IO.PackagingAPI and provides strongly-typed classes to manipulate documents thatadhere to the Office Open XML File Formats specification. The OfficeOpen XML File Formats specification is an open, international,ECMA-376, 5th Editionand ISO/IEC 29500standard. If you can't start a Microsoft Office application in Office Safe Mode or you have recurring problems opening applications in normal mode, you can try to repair Office. For more information, go to Repair an Office application
Automated safe mode is triggered if a Microsoft Office application could not start due to specific problems, such as an add-in or extension that won't start or a corrupted resource, file, registry, or template. A message is displayed to identify the problem and ask whether you want to disable the part of the application that has a problem. If problems opening the Office application continue to occur, automated safe mode may prompt you to disable more functionality that may be preventing the Office application from starting normally.
After you view the items listed in the Disabled Items dialog box, you can select an item and then click Enable to turn it on again. Enabling some items might require that you reload or reinstall an add-in program or reopen a file. After you enable an item, the program might run into a problem the next time it starts. In this case, you are prompted to disable the item again.
The ISO/IEC standardization of Office Open XML was controversial and embittered,[17] with much discussion both about the specification and about the standardization process.[18] According to InfoWorld, "OOXML was opposed by many on grounds it was unneeded, as software makers could use OpenDocument Format (ODF), a less complicated office software format that was already an international standard."[17] The same InfoWorld article reported that IBM (which supports the ODF format) threatened to leave standards bodies that it said allow dominant corporations like Microsoft to wield undue influence. The article further says that Microsoft was accused of co-opting the standardization process by leaning on countries to ensure that it got enough votes at the ISO/IEC for Office Open XML to pass, although it does not specify exactly who accused Microsoft.[17]
This is limited to applications which do not deviate from the ISO/IEC 29500:2008 or Ecma-376 standard and to parties that do not "file, maintain or voluntarily participate in a patent infringement lawsuit against a Microsoft implementation of such Covered Specification".[25][26]The Open Specification Promise was included in documents submitted to ISO/IEC in support of the ECMA-376 fast-track submission.[27]Ecma International asserted that, "The OSP enables both open source and commercial software to implement [the specification]".[28]
Starting with Microsoft Office 2007, the Office Open XML file formats have become the default file format[36] of Microsoft Office.[37][38] However, due to the changes introduced in the Office Open XML standard, Office 2007 is not wholly in compliance with ISO/IEC 29500:2008.[39]Office 2010 includes support for opening documents of the ISO/IEC 29500:2008-compliant version of Office Open XML, but it can only save documents conforming to the transitional, not the strict, schemas of the specification.[40][41] Note that the intent of the ISO/IEC is to allow the removal of the transitional variant from the ISO/IEC 29500 standard.[41]
Working in the open is the secret sauce. Microsoft engineers work to adopt industry-standard technologies, work in the open, support a diversity of technologies and platforms, and contribute upstream as often as possible.
With participation from around the world, new perspectives are discovered, passionate users are able to dig in, and a special connection exists between upstream projects, maintainers, and all open source projects.
Open source makes amazing business sense: industry-standard open technologies are super flexible: easy to adopt, attract leading talent that's familiar, and provides an opportunity to rapidly innovate and deliver value tailored to specific needs, building on the work of others.
Together with our colleagues at LinkedIn, we are happy to announce that Feathr feature store is joining the LF AI & Data Foundation, an umbrella foundation of the Linux Foundation supporting open source innovation in artificial intelligence and data.
I want to open a blank word document in the word app so I can start writing up my uni assignment, but it always opens the browser version of word. I can download, and I own, the OneNote app, but I can't find a way to download the word app or open my documents in the app version of word rather than the browser version. If anyone has a way to do either of these, help would be greatly appreciated thanks.
I've encountered an annoying issue where any links in Microsoft Office 2010 applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) installed on Windows 10 always open links in Microsoft Edge. This is despite having set Firefox or Chrome (I tested both) as the default browser.
Addendum 2023:
There is new option in OUTLOOK to configure how links are opened by Outlook.
You'll find the setting in Outlook Options > Advanced > Link Handling > Open hyperlinks from Outlook in: .
You then have he choice between "Edge" and "Standard Browser". Guess what Microsoft chose as the default value ;-).
You can view and edit other Office file formats by opening them directly from the Office apps for mobile (Word, Excel, or PowerPoint). From the appropriate Office app, tap on the Account tab and connect your Dropbox if you haven't already. Once connected, you can access the files in your Dropbox from the Open tab.
When you edit or open your Dropbox files with a third-party application, you have the choice to set that app as the default for opening files of that type. To set a default app to open certain file types:
While the Dropbox app has supported editing files via third-party apps and saving them back to Dropbox for quite some time, this integration goes far deeper. We've streamlined the experience so that fewer steps are needed to edit and save your files. For the first time, you'll be able to install Office through the Dropbox app. Office Mobile will also include ways to share links via Dropbox and open up the Dropbox app directly, making the experience more seamless than ever before.

For iOS, offline editing is only supported if you've opened the most recent version of the file in the Office app prior to going offline. Editing offline files that have not previously been opened in Office is not supported at this time.

If you opened a file from the local desktop or other non-Box source, you can always save it to Box by using the Save As menu, which provides options to browse to a Box folder and save your file.
Files that are opened from Box are saved to Box by default. Office applications have the AutoSave option enabled by default, meaning that your documents will be saved automatically as you edit them. You can disable AutoSave in the menu of your Office apps. If AutoSave is disabled, your changes will be saved to Box whenever you manually tap Save.
I am having same problem now on our machines since update. Microsoft has been hammering this office app and website. It's crazy, now when we print pdf's it opens office.com website. I'm not changing drivers that I have been using for 5 years, hate global driver. Anyone find real solution to this?
After updating Windows 10 64bit Pro to version 1903 build 18362.267 this morning (I've had prior builds of 1903 for a while now), several people in my office including myself are now getting a pop-up window from Microsoft that is looking for you to sign in or create an account. I've attached a screenshot. I found a related post on Microsoft's forum from clear back in May, but the Microsoft agent suggested they come here for a solution as it seems to be specifically tied to Xerox machines.
The Windows update installed "Office" as an additional app beyond the full suite that we all have, and it is clearly related as the icon on the taskbar for the pop-up matches the app. I have uninstalled it multiple times, with reboots, and it stays uninstalled until the moment I try to print to the 7970, at which point it quickly auto-reinstalls itself, and then pops that window open again. The pop-up occurs about the same time as the Xerox pop-up for entering an accounting code.
