I realise this is a very old thread, but I'm considering getting a new MBP 13 and have a trusty Lenovo USB3 dock which I'd prefer not to have to replace (it's not necessarily a deal breaker but could be another $150-$250 I'd prefer not to spend in switching back to Mac).

I'm using that dock on MBP for additional screen + printer. Aukey made a great USB-C power pass-thru adapter that includes USB 3.0 ports and HDMI port as well. i got it on amazon for something like $45.

While Lenovo doesn't supply a driver for the display adapters, the chipset inside it (and as far as I can tell, all other USB 3.0 to DisplayPort devices) is provided by DisplayLink. You can install the generic DisplayLink adapter drivers directly from their website at:

I am using the Lenovo usb 3.0 dual monitor docking station with the new beta drivers March 13 2015. I think they got it right now. No more screen blinking when watching videos and ethernet is working great. I have Mac Book Pro 15.4 11.2 Mid 2014. This is my first mac.

I also tried reinstalling the DisplayLink drivers. One monitor was back - but only briefly, unfortunately. When I touched the HDMI cables of the other monitor to make sure there was no loose contact, the one that had just restarted working, broke down again.

"Fully unplug the dock from all devices, power, and USB-C cable to the host computer. Wait about 30-60 seconds, then reconnect the power cable first, USB-C host cable next, and USB devices last. Sometimes a reset in this order can resolve this issue.

We have a troubleshooting tool that helps us find out what is going on in situations like this. Please plug the dock with your monitors attached to it into your computer, then go to this page and follow the instructions there:

Reattach the power cable to the dock first. Once the dock is powered on, reconnect it to your system which will trigger the final portion of the installation. If the device is not detected, please reboot the system.

What a pity But thanks for providing me with another device which hopefully can fix the issue. The warranty should still be valid btw if that is relevant as I bought the docking station less than a year ago

Thank you for the suggestion. I am sorry but do I miss something here or do you mean the Windows USB LAN driver that I need to update?
I booted up Windows and checked the system using the Levono vantage programm to ensure everything is still up-to-date. As the problem was not solved for my computer with the newest kernel upate, I am back to the old 6.0.18 kernel that runs without problem.

Hi @abgthr ,
interesting problem, indeed.
I am also using the nouveau driver since I have been to lazy to disable the secure-boot feature to be able to boot unsigned kernels with the NVIDIA driver.

Or you could easily install the akmods package then follow the instructions in /usr/share/doc/akmods/README.secureboot and enable signing of the drivers. Then when the drivers are installed they would be automatically signed and easily load with secure boot enabled.

Yesterday, my Fedora updated the kernel to 6.1.18 and I noticed that hotplugging works again, but only if you boot the system without being connected to the dock. After boot, you can connect and reconnect as many times you want and for me it works
Maybe this will mitigate the problem for you too, until they properly fix it.

@sampsonf a Lenovo P1 gen 3 has only two thunderbolt connectors and no non thunderbolt. There would be a possibility of a regular always on USB 3.2 gen 1 on the other side, but I am not quite sure if I want connect the dock via this port.

Luckily I have one regular HDMI port plus two usb-C thunderbolt ports, so I have the port real estate to move my monitors to separate connections and still keep power control and everything else on the thunderbolt dock. The only downside is two extra connections to plug/unplug when going mobile.

Solved for me: thank you @computersavvy ,I installed akmods and the NVIDIA driver. Now, I am running the 6.1.18-200 kernel without problems. Two displays are working: 1 HDMI and 1 DP connected without distortion.

This is an example of why it is recommended to install the nvidia drivers from rpmfusion. The RPMs provided there are tweaked and adjusted to just work with fedora, while the drivers directly from nvidia may require the user to do the modifications that are already done by the developers at rpmfusion.

Also, when installing from rpmfusion the normal system updates of kernel and drivers are managed automatically with updates while drivers installed directly from nvidia must be manually recompiled with every kernel update.

How do I understand which laptop docking stations do NOT require a software driver installation, so I can recommend compatible docking stations to employees? People cannot install software themselves and we (IT Dept) cannot install third party software drivers for security reasons.

I want to recommend docking stations for people to use at home with their business laptop. Some are asking for low cost recommendations. We purchase enterprise docking stations for in-office use only, which are too expensive for most to purchase themselves. I see some low cost third party docking stations come with a display driver, while other do not appear to require a driver. We do not support third party installation drivers, outside of OEM laptop manufacturer, due to security requirements.

Most docking stations are in the price range of USD 100 to USD 300 (which is not overly expensive if you think of the ease of use).
One of the more expensive docking stations I would think is the ones for Dell and HP lappy where they need an extra large power supply.

The advantage for me is convenience, plugging 1 cable (USB C) into my laptop when I get home vs 6 or 7 cables that may or may not be where I left them and I get couple of extra USB ports for when I need to use memory sticks or external devices without having to unplug something else, my laptop, as good as it is lacks ports

You are correct. Dell and HP USB-C docking stations do not require additional software, although they are pricy due to power brick. I found a $50 deal on one of these, although that is only a short sale.

We use Dell UD22 (previously WD19TBS and D6000). We can and have installed drivers, but I have noticed the docks work perfectly with my personal laptop and zero installs.
Not cheap, but USB-C and does everything.

They all require drivers, but for Windows 10 & 11, those drivers are generally available from MS Update so they get installed silently in the background. The most common display driver requirement for a generic dock is going to be DisplayLink. It allows the display to be bundled over the USB connection, and it has some limitations. Thunderbolt would be the best option for connectivity because it carries DP traffic.
