The word identify is frequently used to describe how someone views themself and can be useful when writing about issues of identity. But often phrasing like is a woman is more to the point than identifies as a woman.

Transgender medical treatment for youths is increasingly under attack in many states and has been subject to restrictions or outright bans. But it has been available in the United States for more than a decade and is endorsed by major medical associations.

Opponents of youth transgender medical treatment say there's no solid proof of purported benefits, cite widely discredited research and say children shouldn't make life-altering decisions they might regret.

Did you know the bias rating of the current edition of the Associated Press Stylebook is not a “just the facts ma’am” neutrality? AP Style recommendations contribute to our polarized public square with a left-leaning filter. What follows is a reading of the column, commentary with a few tips on how to detect bias (left or right) and a couple of Squirrel!!! trails.

Also look for excerpts from the AP Stylebook 56th edition pasted in below in accordance with the Fair Use Doctrine. According to the AP, the doctrine allows for the publishing portions of a copyrighted work when necessary to make a particular point, with particular favor given to uses for “news reporting, criticism and comment.”

From the 56th edition of the AP Stylebook: Offered here as examples underlying the “Leans Left” bias rating. Read for yourself and see how many instances of bias you can spot, arguable points laid out as solid facts, phrasing and terminology which supports a single point of view rather than a robust debate. From the Transgender Coverage Topical Guide:

Excerpt from Terminology and red flags:

Avoid terms like biological sex, along with biological male and biological female, which opponents of transgender rights sometimes use to refer to transgender women and transgender men, respectively. They are also redundant because sex is inherently biological.”

“Transgender medical treatment for youths is increasingly under attack in many states and has been subject to restrictions or outright bans. But it has been available in the United States for more than a decade and is endorsed by major medical associations.

Treatment typically begins with an evaluation for gender dysphoria, or the distress caused when gender identity doesn’t match a person’s assigned sex. If children meet guidelines and are showing signs of puberty, they can begin taking puberty blockers — fully reversible prescription medication that pauses sexual maturation, typically given in injections or skin implants.”

AP Style is a guiding light for writers and editors to ensure their grammar, punctuation, spelling, language and style is consistent and current, but it can be overwhelming to keep up to date on the frequent changes. Especially when the most recent edition of the book (The AP Stylebook, 56th Edition) is more than 600 pages long!

The current edition was published in June 2022, and includes more than 300 new and revised entries since the 2020 edition. Additions and changes to the book reflect how the English language is evolving and account for cultural trends, shifts and events.

The chapter encourages communicators to expand their source pools, seek out different perspectives and reject tokenism and sweeping generalizations. The chapter also offers guidance on how to challenge different kinds of biases and be intentional about language, visuals and accessibility.

There are brand new entries since the last edition, including critical race theory, historically Black colleges and universities, Juneteenth and more, while other entries have been revised, like the guidance to not use Black(s) or white(s) as either a singular or plural noun. The Arab Americans and Native Americans sections have also been updated.

A variety of style guides exist for different purposes. Three of the most popular style guides in use today are The Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition; The Associated Press Stylebook, 56th edition; and the MLA Handbook, 9th edition. CMOS is used primarily in the publishing industry, AP for journalism, and MLA in academia. (I use CMOS.)

These Stylebook entries are part of a number of updates including a new chapter on inclusive storytelling, which includes updates on covering disabilities; race; gender, sex and sexual orientation; and religion. The chapter also provides advice on overcoming biases while reporting to ensure accurate and comprehensive coverage.

The new entries include instructions to capitalize Deaf when referring to the Deaf culture or Deaf community, guidance to use they/them/their as much as possible when referring to people who use those pronouns and the recommendation not to use the abbreviation CRT when referencing critical race theory.

Some of these entries were already presented at the annual ACES: The Society for Editing conference in April. The updated Stylebook, which is in its 56th edition, includes more than 300 new or revised entries.

In addition to the inclusive storytelling chapter, the AP has updated its chapters on social media and web-based reporting, and polls and surveys. The AP also expanded its guidance on immigration and migration with 20 new or revised entries about the subject, including an explanation of the difference between an immigrant and a migrant, as well as a list of the different agencies dealing with immigration and migration.

The 56th edition of The Associated Press Stylebook has officially been released. This trusted companion of writers and editors around the world is now in its 70th year. While many of the 300 new and revised entries involve the written guide being brought up to speed on the online edition of the style guide, there are also several interesting and noteworthy updates that specifically have to do with current events in our rapidly changing world.

Over the years, AP has added topic-specific chapters to their stylebook to help writers and editors stay up-to-date on the latest guidelines for social media, the economy, sports (do you know how to correctly report a baseball score?), religion, media law, and various technical aspects of writing.
