Hi everyone,

With regard to the chapter on "Markets and Morals" (pp. 76-102), I
pose the following question:
Do you think that military service should be compulsory for a 2 yr.
commitment (ages 18-40 for all able-bodied citizens)? Some other
countries, notably Israel, make this a criterion for citizenship. Why
not in the US? Please respond "Pro" or "Con" based on something from
the reading. As always, any other related comments are welcome.
Discuss...

I dont think that the draft should be reinstated because, if it was,
people would protest and it would have ultimately a negative effect on
the country's morale. The reasons that the people would protest is
because it violates their personal liberties blah blah libertarianism.
The reason that I found FOR reinstating the draft is incredibly racist
and ignorant. ergo, I wont do it justice by relaying it to you. I
personally would not be outraged if they brought the draft back, but,
I know that many others would be. And thus, for the overall betterment
of our country, dont reinstate the draft.

Also, if Austrailia has more people like Zangeif kid here, we should
be very afraid.

I completely agree with George. If the draft is reinstated, I can only imagine how many people would protest against it. Think about it, how many parents out there would like to send their child/children off to the army? As far as I know, not a lot. In the reading it says "...It is unfair to hire substitutes to fight in their place." People could argue that it is unfair that they are being drafted when they didn't want to join the military in the first place; merely an invasion of their rights. In the reading it also says "Those of us who'd rather not enlist hire other people to fight our wars and risk their lives." Basically, those who are drafted will most likely pay to hire a substitute. I believe the draft would just stir up strife and cause conflict.

I don't think the draft should be reinstated because in the US, free
will is an important aspect of our government. To force people to
serve the military would violate this, as well as cause a lot of
protests.

I do not believe the draft should be reinstated in any way, ever. America prides itself so much on being this "free nation" but i feel that if the draft were to become a reality each citizen would lose some of that freedom we're all so proud of. Yes, there is a chance that if the draft was a reality in modern America it would reduce the amount of wars we're involved in, but i don't think it would make that much of an impact. Idiot politicians will continue to be  idiot politicians, draft or not.  People should have the right to decide what they want to do with their lives on their own, no government should tell them.

I do not think that the draft should ever be reinstated. People in the USA have freedoms that they appreciate and are thankful for, and violating some of them is not what we want to be known for. So many people have immigrated to the US because of our freedoms, so using a military draft would be like taking a step backwards. Also, in our national anthem, it ends with "... land of the free, and the home of the brave." We would no longer be considered completely free if we applied a military draft.

i agree with George and Rhianna. I do not think the draft should be reinstated.  I feel as though it would take away the "freedom" that Americans have to choose what they want to do.  By reinstating the draft, people will be forced to join the military and this would definitely cause some outrage in our country.

I don't think the draft should be reinstated at all. America is known for having freedoms and having the military draft would completely violate this. People who were drafted and had absolutely no interest in being in the military would most likely pay to hire a substitute. There would definitely be conflict if the draft was to be reinstated.

I agree with many others saying that the draft should not be
reinstated. Of course it goes along with the factor that America is a
land with many freedoms that we are so lucky to participate in. We
have the choice to decide whether we want to enter the military, which
is the main argument against reimposing the draft. Also, I feel that
a volunteer is more motivated and united because they choose to be in
the military. Being "forced" into the military would not only cause
people at home to protest, but it would deeply effect the soldiers
fighting because they would feel no reason for them to be in the
military.

I also agree that the draft should be left out of the military process.  America is a free country, so why should we be forced to do something that may especially endanger our lives if we do not wish to do so?  In my opinion, individuals do not necessarily respond well to being forced into any type of situation, and there will always be a backlash and controversies. We have a volunteer army for a reason...so that people who want to serve are able to, and people who would rather not do not have to. Again, no one wants the government telling us what to do.

I believe manditory military service is unnecessary. America is the " land of the free and home of the brave." Those not wanting to risk their lives for their country have a choice and can assist in helping their countries' needs in many other ways. The brave will join the military and fight to protect our country. Basically, we should all have a choice of decision on the way we give back to the country. The milirary is just one of them.

Though serving for the military is a civil duty, I do not think the draft should be reinstated in the  U.S. There are rights in America that should be protected, especially our free will. Whether we choose to be in the army is up to us and not the government's. A draft goes against this matter.

I do not think that conscription should reinstated.  We, as others have pointed out, are a free nation. If this is implemented again there is questions of civil rights being violated. If you do not want to serve you should not have to. The draft can also backfire. In explanation, if you send a bunch of young men and women to fight when they do not believe in what they are doing, they are not going to fight to the best of their ability. There would be a bunch of kids int here that do not want to be there which may prove to be counter-productive.

I don't think the draft should be reinstated because it would take away people's freedom to choose whether they want to join the army or do something else with their lives. The government's job is to protect rights of citizens. If the government reinstated the draft, then the people would not be fully protected. Without being able to choose, citizens would also be forced to put their lives into danger.

I don't think the draft should be reinstated. I don't think the government should be able to control a protion of our lives by having us serve two years in the military. However, a pro would be that we wouldn't have to worry about not having enough people volunteering for the military because the government would be controling the amount of people entering. A con would be that, as George mentioned in class, people who have no interest in entering the military won't work as hard as they can due to a lack of motivation.

I personally do not think that the draft should be reinstated because like many who said this before me, nothing good would come from it. People would be protesting all over the place, and as evidence from previous wars(Vietnam) if we lose the war on the home front, we lose the war itself. One argument for not reinstating the draft states that "conscription ran against the grain of American individualism" which is totally correct. So, the best thing we can do is keep the volunteer army or we would have a bunch of untrained, scared children who have no desire to fight for their country.

I agree with pretty much everyone else that the draft should not be reinstated because it is against the image that America has of itself as being free.  Also, it isn't  a good idea because people wouldn't have a say in what they wanted to do with their lives if they were wounded and wouldn't be as motivated if they were forced to go to war.

To me, enacting a draft would be a violation of this "free" country's
policy. To be required to serve in the military would contradict with
our freedom slogan. A required two years would be a disregard for the
rights of the citizens of America, and consequently there would be
much protest which may lead to less positive effects than if there
were no draft in the first place. That is all. Peace love.
