dimethoxy ethane, also called glymecithine, dimethoxy tetra-acetic acid, dimethoxy phosphate, dimethoxy septapepturethane, and dimethoxy carbonate, is an organic solvent which is mainly used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, detergents, industrial lubricants, and as an oxidizing agent. Dimethoxy ethane is completely miscible with water. It is produced through the process of oxidation in the presence of heat and pressure. It is also a product of combustion. Its major components are dimethoxy acetate, dimethoxy propylene, dimethoxybutane, dimethoxy carbonate, dimethoxy disulphide, dimethoxy terephthalate, dimethoxy ethane, dimethoxy arginine, dimethoxy isocyanate, dimethoxy bromide, dimethoxy taurine, dimethoxy heptophosphate, and dimethoxy carbolic acid. The products have low solubility and boiling temperature.
This organic solvent has diverse uses in industries. It has applications in a wide range of industries and can therefore be termed as a versatile material. Pharmaceutical industries use dimethoxy ethane or the synthesis of a number of hormones and prostaglandins. They have found it to be useful in the manufacture of medicines and cosmetics. Its use as an oxidizing agent has made it a widely used ingredient in cosmetics, skin care, perfume, hair care, tattooing, hair dye, leather treatment, and pharmaceuticals. While DMB-2 is much less expensive than dimethoxy propylene, it is a less practical choice. D MB-2 is unaffected by elevated temperatures and therefore is commonly used for oxidation purposes under pressure vessels in laboratories and production environments. Dimethoxy butene is better suited to oxidation purposes at room temperature.
Dimethoxy propylene was initially used in soap production and was later used for making acrylic and polyester fibers and fiber cloths. Dimethoxy ethanol is better known for its energy source, although its application involves a rather complicated process. It is made from butanediol carbon dioxide and methyl ester hydrochloride via a process called hydroxethylation. The result is the production of methyl esters and butane.
It was also found that the hydroxyl group of substances is useful in the context of fuel and industrial lubrication and other oil refinement processes. Dimethoxy ethanol is a common constituent of biodiesel, a liquid fuel typically used in diesel engines and other types of vehicle exhaust systems. The compound is also found in cosmetic products, shampoos, detergents, aquarium oils, nail polish, toothpaste and some foods. It is also used in the pharmaceutical industry as an oxidizing agent in the production of medications, cosmetics, antifungals and antibiotics. Its uses in the cosmetic industry are limited to food and beauty products. In addition, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has set standards for its use in cosmetics.
