Daniel Bates

Daniel M. Bates was born about 1805 in Amherst Co., VA and died July 1, 1877 in Memphis, TN.

 

He was living in Henry County, IA in 1850; Callaway Co., MO in 1860 and 1870.

 

He was a member and founder of Linden Ave. Christian Church in Memphis. Daniel’s daughter Mary married his co-publisher Stephen C. Toof and both families moved to Memphis in 1863.

 

Daniel’s parents were William Bates and Rosanna Meador, both natives of Virginia.

 

His first marriage was to Sarah Ann Lavender in Amherst Co., VA on March 20, 1823.  She was born about 1804 in VA. and died about 1858 in either Iowa or Missouri.

            Verlinda Grace Bates (b. 30 Jun 1829 in Amherst Co., VA) (married George Harrison Niece; d. 31 May 1901)

            Luther R. Bates (b. 7 Mar 1831 in Amherst Co., VA) (d. 1864 in CA)

            Matilda G. Bates (b. 22 Dec. 1832 in OH)

            Mary Ann Bates (b. 10 Oct. 1835 in OH) (married Stephen Cummings Toof Jr.; d. 8 Oct. 1908)

            Rosalie Bates (b. 7 Mar 1837 in Henry Co., IA) (d. 2 Nov. 1837)

            Sophronia K. Bates (b. 19 Mar 1839 in Henry Co., IA) (married ----- Douglas; d. in CO)

Daniel M. Bates married second Martha Sheeley about 1859 in Calloway Co., MO. She was the daughter of Benjamin & Patsy Sheeley and was born about 1803 in VA.
