Jim - Here is information I have located on "The Voice of Truth" from
books here in our office.

>From "Harvesttime on The Prairie: A History of Baptists in Illinois,
1796-1996" by Myron D. Dillow; Providence House Publishers, Franklin,
Tennessee - 1996.

Page 154 (from a section titled, "The Campbellism Controversy"):

Alvin Bailey, another prominent figure among Illinois Baptists as
pastor, editor, and denominational leader, was actively engaged in
combating Campbellism. His periodical, "The Voice of Truth," was
especially published to counter the teachings of Campbellism. He also
delivered lectures against "the doctrine of the pretended reformation."

Page 167 - (section "Baptist Periodicals, 1829-1845"):

"The Voice of Truth" (1842-1843) - Another prominent name in Baptist
journalism in Illinois was Alvin Bailey (1802-1867). He began publishing
"The Voice of Truth" in 1842. The purpose of this paper was to deter
the encroachments of Campbellism. He published it monthly at
"Jacksonville, but [it] ceased after one year." The "Missouri and
Illinois Baptist" superseded this publication.

>From "Southern Baptists in Illinois" by Lamire H. Moore (Editor, 'The
Illinois Baptist'; Benson Printing Company, Nashville, Tennessee - 1957.

Page 59 - ("Expressions of Baptist Life 1830-1900"):

While publishing the "Missouri and Illinois Baptist," Bailey also
published "The Voice of Truth." Later, he edited the "Watchman of the
Prairies," "The Voice of Truth" was of brief duration and dealt
primarily with Campbellism.

There are many old bound issues of periodicals, books and other papers
in the historical library. I was not able to spot a copy of "The Voice
of Truth" on a quick trip thru, but you are welcome to come and check
out the library to see if you can locate one.

An email has been sent to the staff here to see if anyone has the copy
of "Illinois Baptists" A History" since I could not see one in the
library.

The other book mentioned above, "Harvestime on The Prairie" is available
here also. It's a pretty extensive history. You could also review it
here in the library unless you wanted to purchase it - the cost is
$20.00.

If you would like to come and look around, just let me know and I'll
make arrangements to have you let in the library. Our office hours are
8:30 - 4:30, but the staff in the area where the library is (basement)
usually work until 3:30 or 4:00. You are welcome to take any notes you
wish, and some of the material may be suitable for copying - if not too
fragile - and that can also be arranged.

Hope this helps.

Polly,

Thank you for the helpful information about the Illinois Baptist State
Association's historical collections. I'm hoping that copies of Alvin
Bailey's "The Voice of Truth" are available some where. The OCLC
database does not list any libraries with copies, but their database
only includes holdings of member libraries.

Here is the quote I mentioned. It is from Edward P. Brand, "Illinois
Baptists: A History." Bloomington, Illinois: Pantagraph Printing & Sta.
Co., 1930. Page 161:

"In July, 1842, appeared at Winchester the first number of Alvin
Bailey's monthly, the "Voice of Truth." It was a public discussion of
Campbellism, and arose from strictures by B. W. Stone on a series of
lectures on Campbellism delivered by Elder Bailey at Jacksonville. It
was published monthly for one year. The discussions are still of value,
but not so much so as formerly because the teachings of Campbell are not
taught today as he taught them."

My interest in the periodical tied to a book I am writing on the history
of "Campbellism."

Thanks in advance for any additional assistance you can give me in
locating "The Voice of Truth."

Jim
