Subject: Re: [STONE-CAMPBELL] Research Interests
To: stone-c...@acu.edu

I'll take you up on it Jim.  (And thanks for bringing this up...a worthwhile exchange, I think.)

I am interested in James Walton Shepherd, Charles Elias Webb Dorris and the Movement in Nashville/Davidson County, branching out into Middle TN through the efforts of the likes of Shepherd, Dorris and others of what John Mark calls the "Tennessee Tradition" or Nashville Bible School orbit. More narrowly, my research is focused though on the movement in the city of Nashville and Davidson County (metro government since the 1960's) from 1810  or so to the present.

Like you, no biographical or congregational detail is too small for me.  I also have an interest in bibliography, particularly the 19th c. united movement (united as it was) and 20th c. Churches of Christ.

Sweeney preached in Nashville in about 1898.  I am going from memory as my copy of Hooper's bio of David Lipscomb is not readily accessible, but as I remember it Sweeney was asked to preach some at South College Street Christian Church where DL served as an elder.  Gospel Advocate also issued 3-4 printings of Sweeney's Sermons.  Do you know any more about that preaching engagement?  As I remember it, Sweeney's views of the organ were objectionable to some in Nashville, but DL was willing for him to speak at South College St, and perhaps also at NBS.  Again, pardon that I'm going from memory.

Also, what TN state histories are you aware of besides Herman Norton's, William Woodson's, and a couple of theses that are, like Hooper, not readily accessible in my mess-of-a-study?

Thanks again for bringing up the thread and for rejoining the conversation.  Good to have you back.

Many thanks,
Mac

Listers,

One thing we used to share with each other back in the early days ("the good old days"?) of this list was our research interests related to Stone-Campbell history. Our thinking was to make those areas of reading/study/research known to the list so that our fellow "listers" were aware of those areas and as they read/studied/researched, they could make note of articles/references to the topics of interest to others and share them, either off-list or on-list.

Since it has been a few years since I was active on S-C, I'll take the lead. Here are some areas I'm always interested in learning/hearing more about:

- John Steele Sweeney (debates; publications; biographical information, regardless of how small)
- Illinois local congregation histories, regardless of the branch of the SCM
- bibliographies of SCM publications
- Christian Connection (also called Christian Connexion; Christian Denomination)

My private library contains a large number of state histories of the SCM. If you write me off-list, I'll be glad to search the indexes of these books to see if a person or topic of interest appears. Another of my works in progress is an index of the indexes of these books.

Jim
