TheMiracle Question is the most popular technique in solution-focused coaching and therapy. When used correctly, it serves as a life-changing experience. In this post, I will discuss the miracle question and how to use it in coaching.

The miracle question is a solution-focused technique that a coach or other helping professional uses to guide individuals to envision what their life would be like if the problem no longer existed. The miracle question is not a technique of fantasy. When used correctly, it helps the individual discover what they really want.

Although the miracle question appears easy to ask, it requires considerable skill to achieve the real benefits. The coach must ask the question slowly. The question should be broken down line by line to ensure the individual understands.

The purpose of the miracle question is to propel the individual from a problem-focused conversation to a vision where they can step out of the problem story into a problem-free story. More importantly, it helps the coach know exactly what the individual wants from the situation and how to best help them through coaching. When the coach uses the miracle question in-depth and uses active listening skills and powerful questions, he/she will be able to identify possible solutions and an action plan.

Imagine after you go through your usual day, you go to bed. And while you are sleeping, a miracle happens. When you wake up, you are having a 10 day. As you are going through your day, what would tell you that your day is a 10?

The miracle question is a popular intervention in Solution-Focused Therapy. It asks the client to imagine and discuss a possible world where problems are removed and issues addressed (Strong & Pyle, 2009).

The miracle question prompts and motivates negotiation between therapist and client. When introduced into the session, it typically offers a departure from the prior dialogue. The conversation then proceeds to work out the full meaning of the answer given (Strong & Pyle, 2009).

When the client considers the question, it generates new dialogue with the therapist with the miracle as a clear focus. Whether a starting point or later in the interview, it introduces (or reintroduces) further potential for growth into the conversation (Strong & Pyle, 2009).

The client becomes more active and potentially more engaged in the therapeutic process, constructing and negotiating valuable meanings and insights while showing that they wish to benefit from the discussion.

Language becomes more than a tool for understanding. The process of asking, sharing, and understanding the miracle question communicates experiences and wishes between the speaker and the listener (Strong & Pyle, 2009).

It is important to remember that while initiated as a single question, the broader process of creating a vision of what life could be like may require an entire session. Furthermore, it takes skill to pose follow-up questions, yet it is worthwhile, as it involves building more detail and meaning through elaboration (Stith et al., 2010).

Learning to use the miracle question positively in groups to generate conversation and progress requires a little more thought. It becomes even more critical to phrase the question well, create goals, engage, find exceptions to the problems, remain patient, and respond to each client in the group constructively (Stith et al., 2010).

The potential of the miracle question comes from its ability to create understanding and the awareness it generates through ongoing dialogue. Such questions talk new and additional meaning into being and help shape the therapeutic outcome (Strong & Pyle, 2009).

Research into asking and answering the miracle question shows it creates dialogue through negotiation. The meaning is constructed between client and therapist socially, while they responsively negotiate what they say and how they say it (Strong & Pyle, 2009).

There are many ways to use this technique, i have designed the following version for reasons of simplicity and general usefulness. I have also included a sample answer (at the bottom of the post) to help clarify this process. To use this tool you will need to answer a number of questions. You could write down your answers, or answer them quietly in your mind. For best results, use as many details as you can.

The miracle question might just be one of the most powerful tools you can use to overcome anxiety and creating the quality life you want to live. The concept comes to us from solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), but versions of it were used in older theories of counseling too. It's a question that on the surface is deceptively simple, but when you explore it more deeply, it becomes more than a question. It becomes an answer. Put on your explorer clothes, and let's examine the miracle question so you can use it to overcome anxiety.

The miracle question lets you imagine what things will be like when your anxiety is gone. Knowing where you want to go and what you will do when you get there are important components of any journey. That's the starting point of the miracle question. It's important to note that the question refers to a miracle, but you are free to use any wording that reflects your own beliefs. The miracle question goes something like this:

"Suppose that one night while you are sleeping, a miracle occurs and your anxiety is gone. When you wake up, how do you know that this miracle has happened? What's different about you? What's different about your situation? What changes will you observe during your first anxiety-free day? What will others notice?"

By allowing yourself to visualize an anxiety-free you, you create some space between yourself and your anxiety. Drawing on a concept from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), you distance yourself from your anxiety. In doing so, you can think and create.

The power of the miracle question is not simply answering the questions and moving on but is exploring the details of your life once you've overcome anxiety. Then, the miracle question has the potential to help you:

Describing how, exactly, your life will be different when your anxiety is gone helps you become unstuck. Anxiety has a way of trapping us and narrowing our vision. Anxiety is miserable, and it's easy to become stuck in the misery. Imagining yourself already free from it helps you realize that you will indeed have a life beyond anxiety, and it allows you to sort out what is important enough to make room for in your life. The miracle question is motivating and empowering.

Then, you can go deeper into your answer by building on what's important to you to create specific goals that will, step by step, help you overcome anxiety and create your quality life. Create goals and action plans for achieving them. Meaningful, achievable goals motivate rather than overwhelm you. A plan of action that is user-friendly with small steps overcomes anxiety rather than strengthening it.

As you explore and thoughtfully answer the miracle question, you'll soon discover the most empowering answer of all. You are the visualizer. You are the creator of your goals and taker of your actions. Your anxiety-free life doesn't happen because of a miracle. It happens because of you.

Many therapists use these questions, or similar variations, to help their clients imagine what a solution to their problem would look like. Many of my couples benefit from the exercise. Perhaps you can use it as well.
