We recently bought a new upright freezer.I was curious how long things stay frozen in the freezer when there is a power outage.U already gave Raspberry Pi computers with temperature sensors on them from thingslike this experiment, this one orthis one
Normally the freezer turns on the compressor roughly or twice an hour, with a typicalduty cycle of about 40%. This is with the freezer internal temperature around -20 Cand the ambient in the basement room at about 19 C.
Based on this, I worked out that the freezer lost 2.6% of its coolness for every hourit had no power. With the room at 19 C ambient, it would hit 0 atabout 26 hours in. But food is not pure water, so some of it would thaw beforehitting that temperature. That in turn would help keep the freezer cold,so I'm sure once the temperature got to -5 C, the modelwould no longer hold. However, it would take about 18 hours to get to that temperature, and the freezer was less than half full.
And while the power is out, for each time the door is opened for five seconds, subtract 7 minutes.Of course, a chest freezer will lose much less coldness each time its opened for five seconds. But sometimes you need to rummage through a chest freezer, so it may be open much longer fromtime to time. It's also a matter of individual freezers and freezer size and what's in it.Larger freezers will stay colder longer than smaller ones. This particular freezer is a 14cubic foot (380 liter) size. Heavy foods with high water content, such as berries or meatshold the cold better than lighter foods such as fries or bread.
Fully cooked meats, like ham, bacon and sausage, can be frozen for one to two months to preserve their quality and taste. Fresh, uncooked beef, pork and poultry can last upwards to one year in the freezer, while raw hamburgers and ground beef can be stored for three to four months.
Frozen fruit can last anywhere from three months to one year, depending on what you are freezing. Oranges can be stored for three months in the freezer, while berries, bananas, apples, peaches and plums can last nine months to one year. If you are freezing oranges to make homemade juice, cut the fruit in half and leave the peels on. Or, feel free to peel and slice the oranges and freeze in an airtight freezer bag.
Before freezing, make sure to thoroughly wash your fruit and pat dry. Then, pack the items in sealed containers to help prevent freezer burn. Remember to label the bags with the date so you know when to thaw your frozen bananas for banana bread to get the most flavor.
Radishes, celery, lettuce, cucumbers and other vegetables with a high water content should not be frozen because they typically become soggy once thawed. Any type of fruit can be frozen after washing and placing it into a sealed freezer bag.
If you need to freeze potatoes for a stew or future meal, choose waxy potatoes, like Yukon Gold or red. These types of potatoes can be chopped, boiled and stored in the freezer, despite their water content.
With your freezer set at the optimal temperature of 0F, frozen food can be stored indefinitely. To ensure flavorful leftovers and the quality of your frozen foods, follow this guide to learn how long you can freeze meat, bread, produce and soup for optimal results.
The quality and taste of your favorite foods can be preserved in the freezer anywhere from one to 12 months at the right freezer temperature. This time frame varies for fresh or cooked meats, fruits, vegetables, soups and leftovers. Before freezing, make sure to pack your items in labeled and sealed containers for easy access and to help prevent freezer burn. Being able to freeze food and being pleased with the quality after defrosting are two different things. Some foods simply don't freeze well. Examples are mayonnaise, cream sauce and lettuce. Raw meat and poultry maintain their quality longer than their cooked counterparts because moisture is lost during cooking.
Food stored constantly at 0 F will always be safe. Only the quality suffers with lengthy freezer storage. Freezing keeps food safe by slowing the movement of molecules, causing microbes to enter a dormant stage. Freezing preserves food for extended periods because it prevents the growth of microorganisms that cause both food spoilage and foodborne illness.
Trichina and other parasites can be destroyed by sub-zero freezing temperatures. However, very strict government-supervised conditions must be met. Home freezing cannot be relied upon to destroy trichina. Thorough cooking, however, will destroy all parasites.
Freshness and quality at the time of freezing affect the condition of frozen foods. If frozen at peak quality, thawed foods emerge tasting better than foods frozen near the end of their useful life. So freeze items you won't use quickly sooner rather than later. Store all foods at 0 F or lower to retain vitamin content, color, flavor and texture.
Enzyme activity can lead to the deterioration of food quality. Enzymes present in animals, vegetables, and fruit promote chemical reactions before and after harvest, such as ripening. Freezing only slows the enzyme activity that takes place in foods. It does not halt them.
