Former Spartanburg resident Janice McMann of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., spills the beans on Floridians wanting to fight over water in Georgia. "I saw the pictures of Lake Lanier in Georgia. They say they only have three more months of water, yet Florida wants the water. Florida's just being greedy," she says. "We've got all kinds of water here. They're watering lawns twice a week. The car washes are open. We've had rain. So why is Florida willing to fight Georgia over water there? It can only be greed."

'PHONY': John W. Hoover Sr. of Spartanburg is shaking his head, thinking that folks who would let a Hollywood celebrity influence their vote for president must be on drugs. "These celebrities are as phony as the Democrats running for president," he says.

'THE FINEST': "The nut doesn't fall far from the tree," says Boiling Springs resident Dennis Bayne, describing the character of Bud and Judy Moss' sons, Brian and Jeff. "Both are in the car body repair business, Brian at Circle Body Shop and Jeff at Highway 9 Collision, and Bud, who is a terrific person, and Judy taught them well," says Mr. Bayne. "They're two of the finest boys around, and I figure they couldn't help but turn out good with parents like theirs."

THANKS, BILL: Alice Graham, a teacher at the School for the Multihandicapped at the S.C. School for the Deaf and the Blind, is singing the praises of a kind man she only knows as Bill. She was on a recent field trip to WestGate Mall for the students to visit with Santa and shop, when she was approached by a fellow who asked to help with the students' lunches. "He placed a folded bill in my hand, and we talked for a while, and as he walked off, I unfolded the bill to find that he had placed $100 in my hand," tells the grateful teacher. "I made my way to the place where he was standing and tearfully told him that he was far too generous and that he certainly didn't have to contribute such a large amount, and I again asked for his name to credit him with the donation, but he only said, 'I'm Bill.' Thank you, Bill, for your compassion and generosity. The money has been placed in an account that will take care of student needs."

NEED HELP PACKING?: The words "arrogant" and "ignorant" came to mind, says Chip Cook of Spartanburg, when he read Stacy Clark's comments about not supporting the troops in Iraq. "Our troops are absolutely fighting for our freedoms, Stacy, even without your particular unneeded support," says Mr. Cook. "Without our soldiers' presence in Iraq, you can be assured it would become a training ground for terrorism, with the No. 1 goal being to kill Westerners, mainly Americans. In addition, I would be more than happy to come over and help Stacy pack for Denmark. Wait until you get a taste of their big government intrusion, not to mention the high income taxes. You'll be begging for President Bush's 'Freedom dust.' "

'GOD BLESS': Al Spicer, owner of Al's Service Center in Boiling Springs, sends a heartfelt thanks to everyone who responded to his call for donations for the Boy's and Girl's Club of Cherokee County. "There were many presents and donations," he says. "Thanks for helping put a smile on children's faces at Christmastime. Without you, this could not have been done. Merry Christmas, and may God bless you and your family."

ODDS AND ENDS: Teresa Millwood of Spartanburg is hoping the person who stole her purse last Tuesday while she waited for the bus at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center will find it in his heart to return it. It contained no cash but oodles of personal items she would love to get back. She can be reached at 585-2142.
